NINGBO, Zhejiang, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- A senior official has called for unity among people living on both sides of the Taiwan Strait to promote the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations.Jia Qinglin, member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, made the call during his meeting with James Soong, chairman of the Taiwan-based People First Party and Yok Mu-ming, chairman of the New Party Saturday in Ningbo of east Zhejiang Province.     Jia praised Soong and his party for firmly opposing "Taiwan independence", safeguarding the interests of people from both sides of the strait and those of the Chinese nation, and promoting cross-Strait cooperation. COPENHAGEN, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived here Wednesday evening for the ongoing UN Climate Change Conference.     Wen told reporters aboard his special plane that his attendance at the meeting aims to show the great importance the Chinese government and people attach to climate change and to assert their sincerity and determination to work with the international community to meet this global challenge. BEIJING, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang has stressed that more efforts should be made to improve the people's livelihood while promoting economic growth.     Li made the remarks during a recent visit to north China's Shanxi Province, where he chatted with village cadres and laid-off workers. NANTONG, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- The first Sino-American Dialogue on Rule of Law and Human Rights ended Sunday in Nantong, a city in east China's Jiangsu Province.     The two-day symposium was jointly organized by the China Foundation for Human Rights Development (CFHRD) and National Committee on United States-China Relations (NCUSCR) of the United States.     Representatives from China and the United States exchanged views on topics of government transparency, pretrial detention, labor disputes and lawyers' role.     Prof. Jerome Cohen of the New York University School of Law said the symposium was "a good exchange" and the U.S. delegation learned more about China.     "We talked about some sensitive issues with people we didn't know before. This is a big good start," Cohen told Xinhua.     "The dialogue is a sign of increasing exchanges between non-governmental organizations," Huang Mengfu, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and CFHRD chairman, addressed the opening ceremony on Saturday.     The symposium attracted more than 30 Chinese and U.S. law professionals and scholars.
