SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One person was killed and five others injured after a house caught fire in Logan Heights Sunday morning. Firefighters were called to the 3100 block of Clay Street around 4:30 Sunday morning after receiving reports of the fire. According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, firefighters had to go inside and pull many of the victims out of the home. The condition of the other five victims is unknown at this time.According to a neighbor, a family of six lived in the home. One witness who was nearby when the fire started told 10News he could see one of the victims reaching through bars in the windows, unable to escape. At least three fire engines and dozens of firefighters responded to the blaze. At this time, it’s unclear what sparked the fire, but the metro arson strike team was called to the home to investigate. And US President Donald Trump has already weighed in, threatening to cut foreign aid to Honduras if the group isn't brought back to the Central American country.The caravan, which organizers say numbers thousands of people, formed in the Honduran city of San Pedro Sula on Saturday and crossed into Guatemala on Monday.Members of the group told CNN en Espa?ol that they decided to join the caravan and head to the US because of insecurity and a lack of jobs in Honduras.The big question: Will authorities detain them before they reach the US border?As local media documented the first steps of the group's journey over the weekend, government officials across the region spoke out, advising them to turn back.The US Embassy in Honduras warned of the dangers of the journey and noted that the United States would enforce its immigration laws. Mexico's foreign ministry?released a statement noting that travelers should consult its migration laws before trying to enter."Please bear in mind that current legislation does not permit entry into Mexico if requirements to travel to a neighboring country have not been met," the statement said. "To avoid surprises, please inform yourself before starting out."But the caravan continued undeterred.Police in Esquipulas, Guatemala, about 10 km (6 miles) from the border, blocked their path for nearly two hours on Monday, according to local media reports, but eventually allowed them to continue their journey after the migrants refused to turn back.By Tuesday morning, the caravan had caught the attention of Trump, who tweeted about it.Vice President Mike Pence also weighed in, saying he's spoken with Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández."Told him U.S. will not tolerate this blatant disregard for our border & sovereignty," Pence tweeted.Bartolo Fuentes, one of the coordinators of the march, told CNN that the group planned to apply for humanitarian visas in Mexico that would allow them to travel through the country to the US border.Many families in the caravan spent Monday night in Esquipulas and restarted their march north Tuesday morning.This caravan's emergence comes nearly six months after another caravan consisting largely of Honduran immigrants reached the US-Mexico border.That group's approach sparked a Twitter tirade by Trump, and days later spurred his decision to deploy National Guard troops to the US-Mexico border. Trump also threatened foreign aid to Honduras at that time.Ultimately, migrants from that group crossed the US border and asked for asylum.Leaders of the new caravan told CNN en Espa?ol that it formed spontaneously and was organized through social networks.This caravan's formation also comes just weeks before high-stakes midterm elections in the United States, in which many Republican candidates have been echoing the President's messaging about boosting border security and cracking down on illegal immigration. Considering the legacy of the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who Barrett would replace, women’s rights are at the forefront of many people’s minds.“In general, the Supreme Court has been an important means of expanding, or sometimes reinterpreting equal rights,” Dr. Celeste Montoya said.Dr. Celeste Montoya is a political scientist and associate professor of women and gender studies at the University of Colorado. She says Justice Ginsburg had an unforgettable impact on women’s rights.“You really can’t overstate the contributions she’s made to women’s rights," Dr. Montoya said. "Not only on the Supreme Court but prior to holding that seat. Her whole career has been built on expanding equal rights for women from her position on the ACLU’s women’s rights project, her work as a lawyer, to her work on the Supreme Court.”Rights for women in the workplace when it comes to equal pay and for women seeking an abortion.Roe v. Wade became a hot topic in the confirmation hearings, but Judge Barrett declined to say how she might rule on future cases. However, Dr. Montoya says what we do know from her past rulings is that judge Barrett is considered a social conservative.“There are some conservatives that take more of a libertarian approach and so they’re not necessarily opposed to women’s rights, but they don’t think the government should take a very hands-on approach to it. Social conservatives on the other hand take a different sort of position on it – they tend to support traditional gender hierarchies that are less likely to push for or to support women’s rights in a variety of positions in politics, in economics, in the workplace. They tend to support some of those more traditional roles that women hold.”Dr. Montoya says she believes the Supreme Court ruling on Roe v. Wade has already been undermined impacting access to contraceptives in general. Dr. Daniel Grossman – a professor in obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive sciences at the University of California—echoes the same observation.“We’ve already seen a significant erosion of the guarantee for access to a full range to contraceptive methods in the affordable care act with an increasing number of categories of employers that are able to deny their employees this benefit,” Dr. Grossman said.Dr. Grossman says a Supreme Court with Judge Barrett would potentially continue what he believes is an erosion of women’s reproductive health rights. Montoya notes states have been given more flexibility the past few decades when determining reproductive rights and that will likely continue is judge Barrett is confirmed.“We can expect with a 6-3 conservative split, and one that’s very heavily weighted with social conservatives versus libertarians, that we’ll continue in that direction, that we’ll continue to see precedence that gives states more leeway that dictate how they’re going to define reproductive rights or abortion rights for women,” Dr. Montoya said.What Judge Barrett has shared in the hearings is that although she was nominated to succeed Ginsburg, no one could take her place. She also said she believes courts have a vital responsibility to enforce the rule of law, but policy decisions are better left to the legislative branch. 3524

The fire on South Mountain near Santa Paula erupted Thursday evening and quickly grew to over 6 square miles, or 4,000 acres. Ventura County fire officials say it's threatening the unincorporated community of Somis, which has about 3,000 residents. Evacuations have been called for a few nearby streets in the hilly area, where gusts are fanning the flames even as the winds ease in other areas of Southern California.
