TONGANOXIE, Kan. -- A small piece of fabric kept near a classroom door could help protect students in the event of an active shooter. It was three months ago that kindergarten teacher Tiffany Parker was sitting on her living room floor cutting up a fire hose. "One fire hose makes about 100-110 sections, and I had three hoses donated," said Parker, who teaches at Tonganoxie Elementary School in Kansas.Parker used to be the volleyball coach at Tonganoxie High School. She would use old fire hoses to line her practice drills. Now, the fire hose is keeping her classroom safe and secure when it's not just a drill. "We've always done the typical, you know, cover your window, lock your door, move away, but that never seemed to give us enough security," said Parker. On February 14, 2018, 17 students were killed in a school shooting in Parkland, Florida. "You know, seeing my kids' faces when they were first told, 'OK, if somebody comes in, here's what we're going to do,' before I had the Safety Sleeve, and they were still a little fearful," said Parker. Now, in her classroom of 21 students, Parker keeps the 6-inch piece of fire hose hanging by a magnet near the top of her classroom door. In a matter of seconds, the "Safety Sleeve" can be in place."All you do with it is you place it over the door hanger arm, as far as it will go and then they can't get in the door, it won't open," said Parker. The day after the Parkland shooting, Parker brought the Safety Sleeve into her classroom at Tonganoxie Elementary School. After showing her students how it works, Parker said her students felt more secure. "There was such a sense of relief and a sense of security by my kids and a sense of, 'OK, this isn't going to be it,'" said Parker. Parker presented the DIY device to her school principal. Now, she's made hundreds of them for the entire Tonganoxie School District. While she's created a low-cost safety device, Parker said she has no plans to make any money off of the Safety Sleeve. "So many people have asked me, 'Are you going to patent it? You should sell it.' I am not looking to make a dime on kids' lives," said Parker. California, Ohio and South Dakota have already picked up on the idea. Parker said school districts and fire departments have reached out to her to get the Safety Sleeve idea going in their own communities.   2444

This year, the number of women in charge of Fortune 500 companies hit a new a record, but out of the 37 women on that list, none of them are Latina.Leaders around the country are working to change that.Tanya Ramos is the CEO at Pencils of Promise, a group working to help 100,000 children around the world receive an education.Ramos says that because we don't see many Latinas in leadership roles, it's important to seek out mentors.“I’ve had the great fortune of having remarkable mentors throughout my career and I deem my success based on how many others, others like me, other Latinas, that I’m also able to bring up through the ranks and make room at the table for,” said Ramos.Ramos recognizes it could be intimidating to ask someone to be a mentor, but she says it's unlikely someone will say no.“If you encounter someone that you really believe could provide you with valuable advice, or if they can help you think through challenges, seek them out and ask if they would be willing to chat over the phone, or grab a coffee, when it's safe to do that of course,” said Ramos.A survey by Catalyst, a nonprofit that supports creating workplaces for women, found more than 40% of Latinas don't have a mentor. Transportation officials are warning of what they call a "death spiral" if public transit does not get the federal funding it needs to stay afloat.Ridership has fallen by 90 percent since the pandemic as departments find themselves strapped for cash.“Without transit, there is no economic recovery,” said Corinne Kisner, executive director of the National Association of Transportation Officials (NACTO).The American Public Transportation Association estimates 36 million Americans relied on public transportation in 2019, with about 36 percent of that servicing essential workers, according to the advocacy group TransitCenter.“The reality is that transit agencies are in an existential crisis,” said Kisner.Once ridership dropped across the country, public transportation departments saw their revenues plummet. Beth Osborne with Transportation for America, a public advocacy group, says aside from ride fares most transit money comes from sales tax, which also took a hit when the economy shut down.“It really does have tentacles that affect so much of our economy, of our health, of recovery and getting through this,” said Osborne.In San Francisco, the revenue drop has led to Bay Area Rapid Transit dropping more than 50 percent of its service. The story is similar for most major city transit systems.“We’re really limping along and hoping Congress will approve more funding for us,” said Jim Allison, spokesman for BART. “We’re doing what we can to try and get essential workers to and from where they need to go, but beyond that, it’s not much of a service compared to what we used to provide.”The billion in CARES Act funding alleviated some woes early on, but officials estimate billion more is needed to make it through the end of the year, and right now, no package is in place.If departments don’t find an answer, NACTO says 30,000 jobs could be lost because of stalled capital improvement projects.A lacking service could also mean a life or death scenario for more than just transit departments.“We need people to get tested,” said Osborne. “In many places, they have said they will not test anyone who does not arrive in a car.
