SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In just hours, Rady Children's Hospital is expected to get their first shipment of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. It is unclear how many doses the hospital will receive, but once they arrive they will be stored in ultra low temperature freezers, until they are given to hospital staff. FedEx is in charge of making the historic delivery.The hospital's chief operating officer, Dr. Nicholas Holmes, says most of the hospital's staff wants to get the vaccine. It will not be mandated, since it's only approved for emergency use. The first to get the vaccine at the hospital will be front-line healthcare workers in the 1-A category. The category includes physicians, respiratory therapists, nurses, and other staff who have high chances of exposure to the virus. Dr. Holmes says a team at the hospital spent the last four days planning the logistics for distribution. Staff working in the same departments will get the vaccines on a rolling basis, just in case they experience side effects and to prevent an entire department from having to miss work at once. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — ICE served four subpoenas to the San Diego Sheriff's Department (SDSO) Friday for information protected by sanctuary state policies regarding migrants arrested in San Diego.SDSO is required to protect the data under California's sanctuary state laws, which prohibits local law enforcement from cooperating with immigration detainers or requests for data concerning illegal immigrants."The public needs to be aware and concerned that California sanctuary state laws do not protect public safety and is bad public policy. Criminal aliens are being released back into the community daily and most will reoffend resulting in more victims, " said Gregory Archambeault, San Diego Field Office Director for ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations in San Diego.RELATED: US border agents to pursue migrants in 'sanctuary' citiesICE says it rarely uses subpoenas for information because most law enforcement agencies comply with requests for data on illegal immigrants that have been arrested.California passed its sanctuary state policy in 2017, preventing local agencies from complying with ICE's request. Friday's subpoenas are the agency's first issued in California."The Sheriff’s Department has received the subpoenas from ICE and is in the process of reviewing them. If able to, the Department will comply with the lawful requests in a timely manner," a statement from SDSO read.ICE is seeking information to the following cases:A 40-year-old Mexican national who was arrested in December by San Diego Police for continuing sexual abuse of a child, lewd and lascivious act of a child under fourteen years old, and oral copulation with a person under fourteen years old. ICE says the individual has two DUI convictions from 2009, has been returned to Mexico on eleven occasions between 2009 and 2011, and is currently in SDSO custody.A 42-year-old Mexican national who was arrested for first degree robbery by SDPD in November 2019. ICE says he has a prior conviction for possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine) from 2013 and he was granted a voluntarily departure, but failed to leave the U.S. ICE says he has since been released back into the community.A 31-year-old Mexican national who was arrested by SDPD for battery of spouse and false imprisonment in December 2019. ICE says he has a prior conviction for a deceptive government identification from 2008 and that he's been removed from the U. S. three times between 2008 and 2010. ICE says he has since been released back into the community.A 28-year-old Mexican national who was arrested for assault with force, great bodily injury, child cruelty and battery of spouse by SDPD in January 2020. ICE says he was previously arrested in 2017 for battery on spouse by local law enforcement and was returned to Mexico multiple times in 2004 and in 2018. But painstaking work right here in San Diego is bringing the world ever closer to ending malaria."After you've been doing it for a while you get a little bit tired," said PhD student Madeline Luth, as she works over a microscope, "You're hands get a little bit shaky."She's part of a research team at UC San Diego involved in tedious, precise work."I'm using my syringe here to separate out a single mosquito," she said, "to isolate the thorax which contains all of the malaria parasites." Malaria is a parasite spread by mosquitoes; making the insect the deadliest organism on the planet -second only to humans. Millions of people -primarily in poor parts of the world like Africa- are made sick by the parasite every year. And hundreds of thousands die."What we're trying to do is interrupt the process so the infection never takes hold in your liver.," said Dr. Elizabeth Winzeler, who heads up the research team at the UC San Diego School of Medicine. "So you never develop any symptoms of the disease".Dr. Winzeler says here team has tested more than a half million compounds against the parasite. And is now about to release hundreds of promising mixtures to researchers around the world. "They can take the recipes and the information that we've used and start their own anti-malarial drug development," says Dr. Winzeler.The open door approach with no intellectual property protections, is made possible by billions of dollars in grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In an effort to help solve the homeless problem, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a program that will provide million in financing for seven affordable housing projects.The new development will add 503 units."This is a game changer," says Supervisor Ron Roberts, who championed the proposal along with Supervisor Dianne Jacob. "For the people that need this, this will be a godsend."The money comes from the Innovative Housing Trust Fund, which was created in 2017 to help provide gap financing to developments that can add affordable multi-family rental housing.Many of the units from the first seven projects will be earmarked for the homeless, veterans, people with disabilities or mental illness, families and seniors."For a family of 4 earning just over 70,000 dollars, they won't pay more than 1,900 dollars a month," Roberts says. "You can't find enough bedrooms for a family of four at 1,900 dollars in San Diego."The seven projects will be spread out throughout the county with two in the Otay Mesa/San Ysidro area, two in Vista and one each in Poway, San Marcos and the Southcrest neighborhood of San Diego.All of the projects are expected to be completed by December of 2021. 1288
