SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The images of our firefighters putting their lives on the line are striking; any time of the day or night and often just inches from raging flames, working to save us and our property.They sometimes pay a price.San Diego Fire-Rescue Capt. Dan King told reporters, "I just want to give perspective on what it's like to be a firefighter and to have cancer. Unfortunately, that's me. Two years ago today. I was in the middle of chemotherapy and radiation; pretty extensive treatment. For me, the treatment was very long and very painful."His remarks were during a news conference about a fund-raiser to upgrade the equipment at Firehouse 21 in Pacific Beach Tuesday.Imagine the health risks — every day."Firefighters can experience a lifetime of environmental exposures in a compressed period of time. It may happen at just one fire or, in many cases, chronic exposure over the course of a long career," Firefighter Kurtis Bennett, part of The Cancer Awareness and Prevention Program, said. To fight that the Pacific Beach Town Council wants to raise ,000 to augment city funding.San Diego City Council leader for District 2, Lorie Zapf, told the crowd, "I wish we had more revenue, more money so we could take care of all these equipment needs."Firehouse 21 would benefit directly. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The California GOP Sunday endorsed neither of the two Republican frontrunners in the gubernatorial race. In order to earn the endorsement, one of the candidates, either Travis Allen or John Cox, had to get 60 percent of the delegates' votes. During the first vote, Cox received 55.3 percent of the vote while Allen earned 40.5 percent of the vote. A motion to change the rules of the convention was brought up by supporters of Cox, but the motion failed, leaving both candidates without the endorsement of their party. 567
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The La Boheme complex in the heart of North Park offers plenty of amenities. It even has a salon and Pilates studio at street level. "Pretty sure the rent's pretty up there," said Arthur Reynoso, walking by the building on Thursday. What most people don't know, however, is that 45 of the 224 condos in the building are affordable - to own. It's rare for one to come on the market, but a handful do each year. In fact, one is about to sell for 5,341, which is about 40 percent off the median condo price of 6,000 in North Park. The commission oversees about 250 for-sale affordable homes in San Diego - located in Carmel Valley, Black Mountain Ranch and North Park. Only four are for sale now, and Raman said all have been matched with buyers. However, they can list anytime. Currently, there are about 275 households qualified for that list. The homes are not listed on the MLS. Still, there are restrictions when owning one of these units. Owners must live in them, and cannot rent out any part to supplement income. The commission checks that annually. Qualified buyers usually have 60 to 110 percent of area median income. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The county of San Diego is hoping to help curb the spread of COVID-19 among Latinos in the county with a new campaign announced on Tuesday.County numbers show Latinos are disproportionately affected by COVID-19. Out of the 24,000 confirmed cases in the county, 60% are Latino, but Latinos only make up 34% of the county's population.Out of the 487 coronavirus deaths in the county, 45% of those were Latinos, 38% were White and 12% were Asian.The new outreach campaign will consist of signage in Spanish, with reminders to wear facial coverings and maintain social distance. The county says they are also reaching out on TV, radio and online with resources for the Latino community.Although there is no exact reason for why Latinos are disproportionately affected by this pandemic, county leaders say reasons could include the fact that many Latinos are essential workers, live in multi-generational families and some have underlying health conditions.The county says it's goal is to make sure Latinos have the information they need to protect themselves and their families, encouraging them to get tested and participate if they are called by a contact tracer.To slow the spread of the virus, the county has expanded testing throughout the region, especially in the South Bay. Currently, more than 50% of all testing is being done in this region.The county opened its newest COVID-19 testing site in Imperial Beach last week. This new location brings the total number to six testing sites in South County. Additional testing sites are located in San Ysidro, two in Chula Vista and two in National City."We've not only expanded our testing, but we've also increased our contact tracing in the region," said Barbara Jimenez, director for the Central and South regions of the County Health and Human Services Agency.Jimenez has been spearheading the county's outreach efforts in South Bay communities and has been working with city mayors and other partners to get prevention, testing and tracing messages to area residents."We all need to follow the health prevention messages we've been promoting on preventing the spread of COVID-19. Let's take care of ourselves, our families and our community," Jimenez said.The county has also increased its contact tracing capabilities and now has more than 500 disease investigators and contact tracers who are calling people who tested positive for COVID-19 and their close contacts so that they place themselves in isolation or self-quarantine. Nearly 100 more case investigators will come on board this week and the county will be hiring another 200 from the more than 2,300 job applications it recently received.In collaboration with San Diego State University, the county is deploying about 100 specially trained community health workers and public health students as tracers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Community Resource Center, a non-profit dedicated to helping families in need, was able to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic and deliver holiday happiness to North County families.Every year, the CRC does their annual "Holiday Baskets" program, where families in need get a shopping spree-style day at the Del Mar Fairgrounds to get food, toys, clothing, and more for the holidays.But in 2020, the pandemic made the annual shopping spree impossible because of state and county health guidelines.So the CRC changed things up a bit, turning the event into a drive-thru.Now, instead of walking through a shopping area and picking out items, families will drive through the fairgrounds and have things handed to them in their cars."We'll have a pre-made box of food for each family, we'll have pre-made boxes of blankets for each family, and a pre-made box with family gifts," says CRC CEO John Van Cleef. "So the ability to choose gifts has changed this year, but we'll be providing puzzles, board games, and other family-based gifts."Because of the changes, the CRC could only assist 1,100 families, which is down from their usual 1,600.It may have been even fewer if not for the help of a 15-year old girl."There's always a way that we can help each other out," says Lucie Babcock, who has been volunteering with the CRC since she was 9.For the past five years, Lucie has held bake sales or lemonade stands to raise money for the CRC. She then uses the money to buy toys and gifts for the families.Because of the Pandemic, she couldn't do her usual fundraising.Instead, Lucie wrote letters to family and friends asking for donations. She raised 0."Even if it seems like maybe you don't have the connections to make a difference, there's always a way," she says.Van Cleef says people like Lucie inspire him to keep helping others.The Holiday Baskets event is Saturday, Dec. 4, but families must pre-register to participate. 1952
