The year 2018 may have started like every year, but as we close out the year, we are reminded of some big events that took place. There were the moments that gave us hope, including North and South Korea coming together for the Winter Games. American Meghan Markle married Prince Harry. The two are expecting their first child in 2019. 2018 had love, but it also had heartbreak. Gun violence claimed the lives of dozens of people across the country. At Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, a shooting claimed the lives of 17. Ten were killed at Santa Fe High School in Texas, and 11 people were killed at a Pittsburgh synagogue. These events are just a few that sparked the familiar debate of gun violence in America. Mother Nature also left her mark on 2018. Strong hurricanes hit the Florida Panhandle and the Carolinas. Wildfires caused deadly damage in California. Notable people died in 2018. We lost icons like Senator John McCain, First Lady Barbara Bush and President George H.W. Bush. As for politics, it was heated and loud. New Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh faced allegations of sexual assault, dating back to his high school days. The Democrats took the house in the Midterms, but the Senate stayed with the GOP. Some outrageous moments of the year: Roseanne made a short-lived comeback. Her racist tweets got her character killed off her own show. And we can’t forget about the Tide Pod challenge, that brought serious health concerns as teens ate detergent pods as a joke. We can’t forget those silly viral debates like the “Yanny” vs “Laurel” debate. But whatever you heard, and however your year went, tomorrow is a new year. Happy New Year! 1874

A family in Alberta returned to their car on Monday to find a giant bison licking the road salt off of their car. "As we watched, the owners of the car returned from their hike, and were trying to figure out how to get in the car very respectfully," said the unidentified videographer. A frightening bank scam now allows thieves to get right into your checking account, and even savvy people are falling for it.All they need is:Your cellphone numberA bank account that is compatible with the Zelle money transfer system.You assuming that it's really your bank on the phoneIt just happened to one man in Ohio, who showed how thieves can now con their way into getting thousands of dollars from your checking account.Damon Lander runs a university biology lab. As a university employee, he's not the type of person who would fall for a phone scam — until this one."The other evening, I got a phone call from what I thought was Fifth Third Bank," he said.With his caller ID showing his bank's number, Lander answered the phone, and immediately worried when the caller explained he was with the bank's fraud department."He told me they had detected fraud in my account, and they were going to help me take care of that, and set up security measures, and take care of the fraudulent charge," Lander said.It all sounded perfectly legitimate. So he did what the phone rep instructed, such as entering a verification code on the log-in page on the bank's app.The caller promised to lock the account, and issue him a new debit card. Lander thought everything was taken care of.But within a few minutes, Lander says, he got a strange text from the bank."My user ID had been removed," he said.A few minutes later, he got more alerts from the bank, and that's when he really started to worry."They changed my username, my password, my card PIN and set up a Zelle account."Scammers open Zelle accountLander had never used Zelle before, but it is a money transfer app similar to Venmo that is automatically offered to customers at almost a dozen big banks around the country, including Bank of America, Key Bank, Chase and Fifth Third.Suddenly, Lander watched helplessly as another text alerted him that his brand new Zelle account sent ,000 to a disposable cellphone number."They transferred funds to someone I've never met before," he said,Panicking, he called the bank's customer service number, where he learned the bank had not initiated any fraud call.In fact, to Fifth Third, it appeared that he had made all the changes to his account since he entered a verification code that essentially gave the keys to his account to a scammer.Why this scam is so worrisomeWhat's scary is that this scam doesn't require a thief to gain access to your ATM card or a blank check they found somewhere, as bank theft required in the past.All it takes is a text or call claiming to be from your bank's "fraud department" and they can get into your account. The summer months are the time to work on big highway construction projects. But once you start digging, you never know what you might uncover. “We have over seven pit houses and similar structures that we’ve identified and are excavating and are trying to get the information we need to interpret the site," said Charles Reed of Alpine Archaeologists. While getting ready to expand highway 550 near Durango, Colorado, a team discovered a site about the size of half a football field. Inside were multiple structures that likely were home to a Native American settlement more than 1,000 years ago. And now, the clock is ticking on this group of archaeologists. They’re trying to recover as much of it as possible before a highway is paved over all of it. “We’ve found some worked bone artifacts, which have been really cool," Reed said. "Some sort of worked bone awls, where they’re punching through leather and sort of stuff like that." Reed is leading the team of archaeologists as they excavate this site on top of the Florida mesa. “We have a lot of roof fall here, you can see the collapsed beams and posts along with the reddish oxidation from burning which is suggesting that they probably ritually closed at the end, like intentionally burned it and pulled it down,” said Reed. These archaeologists are hoping to find out more about who lived in these structures, what they ate, and when they left. And they might be the ancestors of the tribes that live nearby today. The Southern Ute Tribe is just a 20 minute drive away from the dig site. The tribe is a partner in the project, and they’re interested in what’s uncovered. They didn’t want to go on camera, but in a statement, they told us they’re collaborating with state agencies on what they call a highly sensitive project. These types of finds during construction aren’t that unusual. The Society of American Archaeology says last fiscal year more than 27 thousand properties were reviewed for historically significant discoveries. And many of these reviews include input from Native American tribes. The Southern Ute tribe says it wants to ensure that any ancestors recovered from these sites are treated with the utmost respect. Reed and his team will keep working with that care in mind until the clocks run out. “Any archaeological excavation, you never, never dig it all,” said Reed. One day soon, this will be a highway, but right now it’s a high point in Reed’s career. “It’s the biggest site, and coolest site I’ve gotten to work on.” 2534
