High school seniors who plan on taking a gap year this fall to wait out the pandemic could be paying for it for the rest of their lives. While a one-year wait might seem like the right decision for students who don’t want to study online or risk COVID-19 exposure, graduating a year later could cost ,000 in lifetime earnings. A new study from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York details how taking a gap year could put students behind their peers financially and create an insurmountable earnings gap.According to the study, a 22-year-old college graduate earns ,000 on average the first year out of college, and can expect to make ,000 the year they turn 25. By contrast, if a student takes a gap year and delays graduation, they can expect to earn ,000 by age 25 — ,000 less. That gap will perpetuate and compound for late graduates throughout their careers.“Being a year behind, these differences add up each and every year, so that those graduating later never catch up to those who graduated earlier,” researchers Jaison Abel and Richard Deitz write in the report. “Together, these costs add up to more than ,000 over one’s working life, which erodes the value of a college degree.”College might cost even moreCollege typically gets more expensive every year, but this year might be an exception. A few colleges are freezing tuition or offering discounts, and students might see their living expenses decrease. Federal student loan interest rates are at historic lows as well. But experts don’t expect those trends to continue past the health crisis. And missing school this fall means you don’t get to take advantage of lower college expenses.Irma Becerra, president of Marymount University in Virginia, says colleges have had to make major investments to prepare for instruction this fall. Her school plans a hybrid-flex model that will allow students to blend in-person and remote learning based on their needs and comfort level.“Every university that I know has had to incur significant expense to deal with safely reopening or keeping staff and faculty on payroll,” Becerra says. She adds that while colleges are sensitive to the ripple effects of the economic downturn, she expects them to raise tuition in the future unless the government increases investments in higher education. “I can only imagine that [colleges] will have to raise tuition because we’ve all had significant expenses.”Students who opt for a gap year may also have to face higher tuition with less aid. According to Lindsay Clark, director of external affairs at the student finance app Savi, “Taking a gap year and deferring admission could affect scholarships or financial aid offerings if they are not guaranteed for the next year.”Is a gap year still worth the risk? While experts agree that making ,000 less during your lifetime is significant, they advise students not to base their gap-year decision on that figure alone.Arun Ponnusamy, chief academic officer at the college admissions counseling company Collegewise, points out that the return on investment for college is still substantial — even with a gap-year pay dip.A college graduate will make roughly a million dollars more than a high school graduate, according to Ponnusamy. “So we are talking about, you will lose 9% of that by sitting out a year? It just doesn’t sound like that is the number you should use to choose whether or not you sit out.”Martin Van Der Werf, associate director of editorial and postsecondary policy at Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce, advises students to consider their motivations for going to college and evaluate any anxieties they might have.As the father of a rising college freshman, Van Der Werf knows firsthand the difficult choices and serious implications facing students. He says that students who are experiencing anxiety about the fall may be best served by taking off a semester or two — despite potential wage loss.“The worst thing that could happen is you start college, you don’t finish and you have all this debt,” Van Der Werf says when talking about the potential for some students to be unsuccessful with remote learning. “Then you don’t have a degree to pay off that debt.”He advises students to keep their options open and pay attention to their school’s reopening plans. “There are colleges who announced that they were coming back but are going online. If that makes you uncomfortable, you shouldn’t do it.”More From NerdWalletDon’t Wait to Refinance These Student Loans‘Shadow’ Lenders Can Leave College Students in the DarkStudent Loan Refi Rates Keep Dropping, Should You Take the Plunge?Cecilia Clark is a writer at NerdWallet. Hotels are still struggling to fill rooms like they were before an avalanche of cancellations starting in March. Now, travelers are slowly returning to train stations, airports, and hotels.“This is something that none of us were expecting or were prepared for,” said Daniel del Olmo, the President and COO of Sage Hotel Management, a Sage Hospitality Group company. Sage Hospitality Group manages 52 hotels across the U.S.“We went from basically a level of revenue of million on a daily basis to effectively ,000 per day in early May,” del Olmo said.“The economic impact has been something that no one could have ever prepared for, you could not have prepared for it financially, you could not have even prepared for it psychologically or emotionally,” said Chip Rogers, President of the American Hotel & Lodging Association. “2020 will go down on record of having the lowest occupancy in the history of the hotel industry and that includes during the Great Depression.”The association represented the entire industry from large brands to small hotels. For smaller companies, the impact of COVID-19 is especially difficult on their bottom line. “Well over 60% of all hotels are actually classified as small businesses by the Small Business Association,” Rogers said.“In the third week of March, we found ourselves having to furlough over 90% of our staff,” del Olmo said.“With no further assistance, about two thirds of hotels say they cannot make it another six months,” Rogers said. Del Olmo said they haven’t reached that point.“We have not had to permanently close, thankfully, any of our properties,” he said. But others have. Fewer visitors means less money and less work.“We’re right at almost 2 million jobs lost in the hotel industry,” Rogers said.Del Olmo said Sage Hospitality had to furlough 5,000 employees, then eventually lay off 4,000. “What keeps us up at night,” Del Olmo said, “is how we bring our associates back to work.”In the meantime, the group is providing help for former employees. “We initially established a Sage Associate Relief Fund, which allowed us to basically provide pantry items to our associates in need,” he said. While employees still on the job were given more tasks to help fill the gap. “Everybody basically on the teams is doing multiple jobs that, in the past, they might have never done before. We have general managers that on a daily basis strip beds and run the parking,” Del Olmo explained. As hotels continue to balance health, safety and running a business, they are getting creative with ways to bring in revenue, such as hosting micro weddings and hallways concerts with musicians.“Basically roaming the halls. You basically could be listening from the comfort and safety of the entry from your room,” Del Olmo said.Even with the creative new solutions, Rogers said without aid or an uptick in travel, some hotels may suffer.“We may be a much smaller industry in the next couple of years but we will adapt,” Rogers said. 2988

Hawaii may have a hurricane on its horizon next week -- though it's far too early to tell how close it will get.Hurricane Lane, a devastatingly strong Category 4 storm now, is heading west-northwest over the Pacific, and is forecast to weaken and pass south of the Aloha State around Wednesday. But the track is uncertain this early, and there's a chance Lane by Tuesday night could bring winds of at least tropical-storm strength (39 mph and higher) to Hawaii's Big Island, the Central Pacific Hurricane Center says.Early Saturday, the storm was more than 1,200 miles east-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii, with maximum sustained winds of 130 mph -- the lowest threshold for a Category 4.The storm could strengthen Saturday and Sunday, but it is expected to weaken to a Category 1 (sustained winds of 74-95 mph) by Tuesday or Wednesday, the National Hurricane Center says.Six computer forecast models predict Lane's center will pass south of Hawaii next week, but the outer bands still could bring strong winds to the islands if the center gets close enough.Lane's approach comes more than a week after Hawaii watched Hurricane Hector pass well to the south. 1159

Frying is a delicious way to make a juicy turkey, but it’s also a bit more risky than the traditional roasting method. If you are looking to fry a turkey, Erie Insurance Group has the following tips:Before you start cooking:1. Buy the right size bird: A 12- to 14-pound turkey is usually the biggest bird a turkey fryer can accommodate.2. Follow the thawing process: Let your turkey thaw and dry. Excess water causes oil to bubble up, which increases the chances of a spill. The National Turkey Federation recommends thawing the turkey in the refrigerator approximately 24 hours for every four or five pounds of turkey.3. Find the right spot: Place a propane-fired outdoor fryer on a level spot far away from your house and any other structures. Indoor electric fryers are often safest on porches, patios, garages or an outdoor area within reach of an electrical outlet; otherwise, place it on a countertop that's a safe distance from any overhead cabinets.4. Do not overfill: Most fryers have a "fill line" indicating how much oil to put in the fryer. If yours doesn't, place the turkey in the fryer and fill three to five inches from the top of the fryer. Do not exceed the fill line.During cooking:5. Take it slow. Heat the oil slowly, and monitor the oil's temperature as it increases. Always check your user manual for the manufacturer's recommendation on cooking times and temperature ranges.6. Don't go anywhere: Stick around the fryer while you are cooking. Many flare-ups happen when no one's keeping an eye on things. The quicker you spot a fire, the faster you can put it out.7. Be ready (just in case): Keep an all-purpose, dry-powder fire extinguisher close by in case something goes awry. And never use water on a grease fire. The Boise Fire Department released a video showing how quickly things can go wrong when frying a turkey. 1851

Gun raffles or giveaways aren't anything new, especially in rural parts of the country. But they're drawing renewed scrutiny after 17 people were killed last week in a mass shooting at a Florida high school. Some people are outraged that a lot of gun raffles are giving away AR-15-style rifles, the type used in multiple mass shootings. Police say Nikolas Cruz used an AR-15-style rifle February 14 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.A raffle currently underway in Kentucky is raising funds for the Central Kentucky Batcats, a girls' softball team. Buy a ticket and you could win a semiautomatic pistol or an AR-15-style rifle kit. While some people have complained about the raffle -- which began before the Florida shooting -- the store has mostly received calls of support, said Kenny Barnett, owner of Fully Loaded Inc., an outdoor and sporting goods store in Lawrenceburg that's providing the guns for the raffle."I've had calls both ways," Barnett told CNN. "For every one against, I've probably had 10 more asking where can they buy tickets?"'Truly astonished' 1103
