SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Due to the pandemic, high school sports are officially on hold until January at the earliest. But while frustration is setting in, CIF is doing everything it can to get the kids back on the field. There's nothing like high school football and the sights and sounds of Friday Night Lights, or a slam dunk on the basketball court. Unfortunately, because of COVID-19, it's wait-and-see for every high school athlete."I think it's very disappointing. Are kids, are families, are schools and communities have been waiting quite a long time and it's been tough," says San Diego Section CIF Commissioner Joe Heinz. There was hope of a December start, but as COVID-19 surged, it was negated by the California Department of Public Health. "It's definitely a fine balance across the nation as different things are happening," Heinz said. "I know our executive director is talking on a regular basis with the California Department of Health and with the governor's office."So for the time being, players, coaches, schools, and everybody else associated with high school athletics must be patient. It has everyone frustrated."You can't blame them. I think we are all frustrated. It's been a long time coming, and when you see other things going on in other states, which has been successful," said Heinz. Now, if the OK is given next month, Heinz says they will have a plan in place. However, there is no guarantee all sports can be played. "Obviously we could get to some point where we just don't have enough time to get a season in. There is no way to compact all of our sports into one season. We're just waiting for that opportunity to put a plan in place. We are just waiting for the word from the state," Heinz said. 1737

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Families across the San Diego region are continuing to battle record high home prices and rents. But there are now several plans in the works to boost supply - and hopefully bring prices down."There's no magic bullet, no magic wand," said Rick Gentry, who heads the San Diego Housing Commission. "I don't see there's one solution. There are a host of solutions that we can bring to bear that over time will reduce the problem."Jimmy Ayala, who heads Pardee Homes of San Diego, says the biggest change that could lower prices is reducing the time it takes to get permits. He says builders can work impact fees into their budgets, but over-regulation and delays from community opposition adds costs to projects that cause some developers to shy away.FULL COVERAGE: Making It in San Diego"If you start on this day and perhaps you end on a more certain date, then more people would enter the industry, more people would enter the market, we'd eventually get more homes," Ayala said, noting that Pardee's 415-home master plan community in Santee called Weston took 10 years for approvals.Local and state governments appear to be on board. The city of San Diego is now offering density bonuses and streamlined review for some projects. It also is encouraging builders add more, smaller units in the same building, with less parking requirements. The county is exploring other options to reduce hurdles to development. That, however, is adding to some San Diego neighborhood group concerns about overdevelopment."My group and my associates just want to see it remain a nice place to live," said Tom Mullaney, who heads Uptown United. "We think we can do that with lots of new development and lots of new housing, but we can't do it if our city government is going to throw out the rule book."Additionally, the San Diego Housing Commission is now able to help finance apartment projects with units for middle income earners, according to a new state law."The challenge for us is how do we develop lower than market rate product for this new customer base without taking away from the customer base that we've traditionally served," Gentry said, noting turnover has dropped drastically at its 3,400 affordable apartments in San Diego.Mark Goldman, a real estate lecturer at San Diego State University, said it would take decades to really balance out supply and demand. But he said any assurances could ease risk for developers who may not want to get involved."You don't know when you're going to get that potential profit dollar," he said. "So yes, time is money." 2622

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Health officials said Wednesday that they are working with the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District to notify people possibly exposed to tuberculosis. Officials said the possible exposures happened at the college’s El Cajon and Rancho San Diego campuses between January 30 and April 24, according to County News Service. The college will be providing no-cost screenings to people who are identified as possibly having been exposed to TB.“Symptoms of active TB include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “But most people who are exposed do not develop the disease and TB can be treated and cured with medication.”The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency says it’s important for individuals with symptoms of TB, or who are immune-compromised to see their medical provider to rule out TB. 940

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Dozens of workers are racing to finish construction of the San Diego Zoo Safari Park's newest exhibit, "Walkabout Australia".It is scheduled to open to the public Friday, May 25. Monday, 10News was the first station invited for a behind-the-scenes tour. The various habitats are meant to reflect the deserts, plains, and rainforests of Australia. But the heart of the exhibit is a large open area in which 20 kangaroos and wallaby will be able to roam free with Safari Park guests."I think that the public will feel like there's virtually no barriers almost on the walkway going up and when they get inside. They're just going to have so much fun," said San Diego Zoo architect Robyn Badger.Zookeepers have been working with the animals before the exhibit opens, getting them comfortable with their new habitat and with being around humans. The kangaroos and wallaby are likely to approach guests on the path. If it happens, guests are asked to stay calm and avoid harassing the animals. While people are not encouraged to reach out to touch the animals first, if the animals make contact, it is okay to gently pet them."If you're calm and you're respectful of those animals, they're absolutely going to want to come and see what you're up to," said Animal Care Manager Steve Metzler.Other animals at Walkabout Australia include tree kangaroos, magpie geese, and cassowary. 1398

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Heavy rains and wind across San Diego County hit one Coronado business particularly hard. The Coronado Tree Farm had only been open for about a week before Thursday's Grinch of a storm rolled through the area, heavily damaging the small farm at the ferry landing. The farm posted on Facebook that it would have to close for the season, before it could fully deliver some Christmas joy."Sad to say that the Tree Farm has to be closed down," the farm wrote. "The rain destroyed all our inventory and commercial props, generator, hay, games, prizes, tables, fencing, tents etc... We would have to start all over again in order to run it."Steve Albert, co-owner of the Coronado Flower Lady, told 10News they tried to curtail any damages but the weather simply took hold."I started trying to get everything I could under the big tent, and while I was doing that, one would break lose, and then another one," Albert said. "The whole thing is just kind of anchored together. The whole thing just went."Some of the trees and decorations are in good condition and will be offered up to anyone. The farm will have trees available Friday for anyone interested. Those interested can also call 619-321-7009. 1220
