WASHINGTON, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- China's rapid economic growth is good for the U.S. workers, and the U.S. government is committed to improving bilateral economic relations with China, said U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke on Thursday."China has lifted almost 200 million people out of poverty (in the past two decades). And in the years ahead, hundreds of millions more Chinese will ascend into the middle class," Locke said at a U.S.-China commercial relations forum, which was held in Washington ahead of the U.S.-China Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade (JCCT) session scheduled for Dec. 14-15."The United States welcomes this growth because this is good for the people of China ... it's good for the global economy, and good for U.S. business and ultimately, U.S. workers," said Locke.He noted that as recently as 40 years ago, the commercial relationship between the United States and China barely existed. But in the recent decades, "we have seen our countries grow progressively closer."In 2009, the bilateral trade volume reached some 365 billion dollars. China was the largest supplier of U.S. goods imports in 2009 and was the third-largest market for U.S. exports, only after Canada and Mexico.Locke mentioned that as U.S. Commerce Secretary, he has visited China for four times."Each time I visit China, I'm absolutely amazed by the transformation and the progress within China," he said.Locke noted that although there are disagreements between the two sides, there are more opportunities for cooperation."In many areas, especially in emerging industries, like clean energy and biotechnology, the interests of China and the United States are tied together. And the reform as good for the U.S. will be good for China as well," he added.Locke also revealed that during the upcoming 21st session of the JCCT in Washington D.C., the two countries will seek to further "nurture and improve the most highly-scrutinized bilateral economic relationship on Earth.""This is our most important bilateral dialogue or mechanism for resolving trade and investment issues between our two countries," he stressed.The session will be co-chaired by Locke and U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk with Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan. U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack will also join the dialogue.

NANJING, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- A kindergarten teacher who reportedly burned seven children using a hot iron on Tuesday has been detained for 10 days by police and fired from her teaching position in east China's Jiangsu Province, said local authorities on Saturday.The teacher, surnamed Yi, 30, of Banqiao Kindergarten of Xinghua City, said that "she did not know the iron was still hot when she used it to discipline the children," according to information released at a press conference held by the city government.The seven children were slightly burned on the face. The burns are expected to fade without treatment within two weeks and probably will not leave scars, according to doctors at Xinghua City People's Hospital.As of Saturday, two children had returned to class, one dropped out of this kindergarten, two remained at home resting and two are seeking treatment in east China's Shanghai Municipality, according to information released at the press conference.Further, the municipal police detained Yi for 10 days and fined her 500 yuan (75 U.S. dollars).The kindergarten owner apologized at the press conference and fired Yi.As for Yi's using an iron because she did not think the iron was still hot, many people did not believe this and posted threads online, such as "How could you still think the iron is not hot since you burned seven kids."But the police believe Yi did not foresee such consequences.Dai Yongjian with the city public security bureau, said the iron had been unplugged from the socket for over ten minutes before burning the children, according to Yi's co-workers."Yi had treated children well before the incident, according to our talks with the kindergarten owners, teachers and children' s parents," said Dai.The students' faces did not show any injuries until that afternoon, said Dai.Yang Qiuhong, mother of one injured child, named Wang Junhua, said , "I was angry at first, but now I forgive Yi and the kindergarten since Yi used to treat my child well and after this incident, the head of the kindergarten came to my home right away and took my child to the hospital."The police believed that Yi lacked necessary medical knowledge and did not seek treatment for the children immediately after their faces began to show signs of being burned.Yi was said to "regret her actions very much", according to Wu Gang, deputy chief of the municipal Education Bureau.Yi does not have a preschool teacher certificate, which is quite common in Xinghua City, since only 40 percent of the 1,600 kindergarten teachers have such certificates, said Wu.According to the regulation issued by the Jiangsu Provincial Government, such a certificate is required for some kindergarten posts, such as the head of the kindergarten and medical personnel. BEIJING, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese president Hu Jintao has urged medical units to take all efforts to cure those wounded when fighting a deadly fire on a grassland in the country's southwest.A strong gust of wind whipped up a blaze that engulfed fire fighters and local residents who were trying to put out embers in a mountain valley in Daofu County in the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Garze, Sichuan Province Sunday afternoon.The fire left 22 dead and injured many before it was finally put out Monday morning. The dead included soldiers and civilians.According to Li Bing with the provincial health bureau, the injured have been sent to the provincial capital of Chengdu for treatment.

BEIJING, Nov.18 (Xinhua) -- Premier Wen Jiabao's visit to Tajikistan next week will deepen friendly cooperation between China and Tajikistan, said Cheng Guoping, Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister, Thursday."Since the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two nations in 1992, bilateral relations have witnessed steady and sound development with extensive high level exchanges and increasing political mutual trust," said Cheng at a press conference.He said because of the joint efforts by the two sides, cooperation in trade, transportation, communications, electricity and infrastructure had been expanding and fruitful.Total bilateral trade volume in the first 10 months this year reached 1.08 billion U.S. dollars, a 2.5-percent rise from the same period last year, Cheng said.The two countries had also supported each other in major issues of mutual concern and maintained close coordination within multilateral institutions like the UN and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), effectively guarding their own interests and making positive contributions to the world peace and development, he said.During the visit, the leaders of the two countries would exchange ideas about bilateral cooperation as well as international and regional affairs.Wen would also attend ninth SCO prime ministers' meeting in Tajikistan's capital of Dushanbe on Nov. 25, said Cheng.He said the SCO member nations were expected to find common ground in promoting regional cooperation, facilitating investment, and enhancing the organization's internal construction.Sun Yongfu, director general of department of European affairs at Ministry of Commerce, who also attended the press conference, said economic cooperation among SCO members had been fruitful due to their close trade links.He said in the first 10 months this year the total trade volume between China and the other SCO states reached 67.9 billion U.S. dollars, up 37.4 percent year on year.Sun said the close cooperation among SCO member nations had made positive contributions to returning the world economy back to growth.

BEIJING, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Finance said here Wednesday that it will sell a batch of 30-year long-term book-entry treasury bonds this week at a yield of 4.23 percent.The bonds, with a total face value of 28 billion yuan (about 4.2 billion U.S. dollars), will be sold over five days starting Thursday, said the ministry in a statement on its website.The bonds are the 40th batch of the kind to be sold by the ministry this year, and will be the fifth batch of 30-year T-bonds the ministry has sold this year.The bonds will become tradable on Dec. 15 through the national inter-bank bond market and over the counter at designated commercial banks. Interest will be paid every half year.
