(KGTV) — A dog and tortoise had to be rescued from a Fontana property after becoming stuck in a hole together. The odd scene played out Wednesday, after San Bernardino County firefighters responded to a report of a man and dog falling into a hole. When responders arrived, the man was out of the hole but the dog, a German Shepard named Taylor, was still trapped, according to SBFD.Taylor had brought a blanket into the tunnel, dug by 70-pound tortoise named Godzilla. The blanket had wedged Taylor and Godzilla together and prevented them from getting free, firefighters say.Firefighters worked to untangle the two animals, digging away dirt from around the tunnel and coaxing Godzilla out with some lettuce until the two were free. Both animals belong to the property owner where the tunnel started, SBFD says. Both animals were unharmed. 846

(KGTV) - Does the DMV really want to start charging people for physically coming in to do business that could be done by mail or online?Yes, but it's not here in California. The Rhode Island DMV is proposing the fee. It wound not apply to 'Real ID' license renewals which must be done in person. The DMV estimates the walk-in customer service charge would bring in more than one million dollars a year.It will now be up to Rhode Island's governor to accept or reject the fee. 486

(KGTV) - Interstates 5 and 15 shut down in both directions Thursday due to snow falling in low elevations, just two of the weather-related problems on Southern California freeways amid a cold winter storm. In the Grapevine, Fort Tejon-based California Highway Patrol officers escorted traffic through the mountain pass on I-5 north of Los Angeles.Officers stopped all drivers about noon while snowplows cleared lanes of the freeway.UPDATE - SR-79 between I-8 and SR-79/78 junction in Julian, is closed due to snowy roadway conditions. #SDCaltransAlert— Caltrans San Diego (@SDCaltrans) February 22, 2019 610

(KGTV) — California voters have rejected a measure that would reinstate affirmative action based on race and gender.Proposition 16 would have ended the ban on affirmative action, allowing state and local entities to consider race, sex, color, ethnicity, and national origin in public education, public employment, and public contracting — to the extent allowed under federal and state law.Californians voted against the measure 56% to 44%, with 72% of precincts reporting.Critics of the proposition pointed to a previous prop, Prop 209, as to why Californians should vote against it.“The state shall not discriminate against, or grant preferential treatment to, any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin, in the operation of public employment, public education, and public contracting,” opposition stated in reference to a passage from Prop 209. 899

(KGTV) — In-state tuition for the University of California system will not increase for the next academic year, UC President Janet Napolitano announced Wednesday. The university system says this is the seventh time in eight years tuition for California residents has not been increased.“We are optimistic about our strong partnership with the governor and the legislature and will work collectively to identify additional resources, in lieu of tuition revenues, to ensure that UC students can succeed,” said Napolitano. The estimated tuition for California residents during the 2018-19 academic year is currently about ,300 (living on campus) to ,400 (living off campus.) That includes tuition and fees, books and supplies, room and board, and personal expenses and transportation. For non-residents, it's about ,300 (on campus) to ,400 (off campus.)UC's tuition decision comes as the college system sets out a new slate of goals to achieve by 2030:Help 200,000 additional students earn a degree; Improve rates of timely graduation and degree attainment; Close graduation gaps for low-income, first-generation and underrepresented students; Increase graduate degrees to advance economic mobility and support industries critical to California; andRecruit and grow more diverse, accomplished faculty.“Accessibility and affordability represent UC’s core values as a public institution, and we need to provide this generation of students with the quality of education they deserve,” said UC Board of Regents Chair George Kieffer. “So this year, rather than raise tuition, we will once again join our students in advocating for additional resources from the state.” 1677
