BEIJING, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- China's National Meteorological Center forecast Thursday that heavy rains would continue during the next 24 hours in northeast China, a region already soaked following weeks of torrential rains.The observatory continued to issue an orange rain alert, the second most serious level, on Thursday, warning that rainstorms would hit most parts of the provinces of Liaoning, Jilin and Helongjiang over the next 24 hours, adding pressure to the country's efforts to combat floods.Rain-triggered floods have left 1,072 people dead and 619 others missing this year in China. Economic losses were estimated at 210 billion yuan (31.34 billion U.S. dollars), Shu Qingpeng, deputy director of the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, said Wednesday.Meanwhile, the observatory forecast that heat would continue in south China during the next 24 hours.Temperatures are likely to hit 35 to 38 degrees Celsius in southeast Shaanxi Province, some parts of Sichuan and Guizhou provinces and areas along the Huaihe River. BEIJING, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Health said Thursday the spread of disease is a major public health concern in mudslide-hit Zhouqu County in northwest China, after local health facilities and water resources were damaged in the disaster."Only a small part of the township area was left after the mudslides. A large number of rescue and relief workers and survivors are now living there, increasing the risk of intestinal and respiratory infectious diseases," an unnamed official from the ministry said Thursday.The official said corpses and dead animals buried under the mud may easily decay under the high temperatures, worsening the epidemic-prevention situation.Although wells have been dug up to ensure water supply, the ministry said sterilization work is arduous as the water may be contaminated during transportation and preservation.Vaccines and their refrigeration facilities, along with the networks that report infectious diseases, were destroyed in the mudslides, according to the ministry.However, with the arrival of new refrigerators and various vaccines, the first vaccination center in the county since the disaster has been set up.As of 4:30 p.m. Thursday, the death toll from the mudslides had risen to 1,144 with 600 still missing.Furthermore, the Ministry of Environmental Protection has sent more than 20 experts to Zhouqu in a bid to prevent environmental disasters.The water quality of the Bailong River remains normal, according to the ministry.

XINING, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- A senior anti-corruption official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Monday urged strict supervision and inspection of relief and reconstruction work in Zhouqu County, which was devastated by a massive mudslide on Aug. 8.A supervision and inspection system must be established to ensure thorough implementation of the central authorities' instructions on disaster relief and reconstruction, said He Yong, deputy secretary of the CPC's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection.He made the remarks at a conference on supervision and inspection of relief funds and supplies.He instructed intensified supervision and inspection of medical, mud-clearing, infrastructure rebuilding, resident relocation and epidemic prevention operations.He also ordered stepped-up supervision of the use of disaster relief funds, supplies and donations, and asked local officials to make public how they were utilizing the funds in a timely manner.He said the principle of openness and transparency must be applied throughout the period of disaster relief work and reconstruction, and vowed to punish any misuse of relief funds and supplies.The mudslide has killed 1,254 while 490 people remain missing as of Monday.
