SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The next great food craze could come from the waters of the San Diego Bay. A pair of scientists is planting a seaweed farm in the bay, to test the plant's marketability for use as food, animal feed, fertilizer, and bio-fuel."Kelp is the new kale," says Torre Polizzi, one of the owners of Sunken Seaweed.Polizzi and his partner Leslie Booher just got a 7,000 grant from the Port of San Diego to start a test-farm in the bay. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The California Department of Motor Vehicles announced new safety measures for its offices Thursday as the coronavirus pandemic continues across the state.Starting Thursday morning, every person who goes to a DMV location will get their temperature checked before they're allowed inside.Previously, only people getting in-car driving tests were subject to temperature checks.A DMV spokesperson told ABC 10News they'll follow CDC guidelines, only letting people inside if their temperature is below 100.4 degrees."We always follow the guidelines that are issued by the CDC," said DMV spokesperson Cynthia Moreno. "So, following their guidelines, we decided that it would be best to start taking the temperature of all of our customers and our employees to make sure that we follow the safety protocols."The temperature screening is in addition to safety measures already in place, which include mask requirements, social distancing, limited services available and hand-washing and sanitizing stations located throughout each field office.Because of all that, DMV officials say it's best to do as much as you can on the agency's website and avoid coming into the offices, if possible."We want to make sure the people who come to our offices feel safe," said Moreno. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Surveillance video captured the moment after a thief stole a woman's wallet inside a Midway District grocery store.According to San Diego Crime Stoppers, the theft happened on Sept. 23 inside the Ralph’s grocery store located at 3345 Sports Arena Blvd.While the 73-year-old female victim was in the freezer section, the man waited for the victim to open a freezer door and then approached her shopping cart. The suspect quickly removed the victim's wallet from her purse, which was placed at the top of the shopping cart.The victim was right next to the cart but was looking inside a freezer when the theft occurred.The suspected thief walked away without the victim realizing what had happened. The total loss of the wallet and cash inside it is over ,500.Investigators reviewed store surveillance footage, which showed the man following the victim throughout the store and appearing to target her.The suspected thief is described as a white male, approximately 5’10“ tall, 175 lbs., with tanned skin. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The City of San Diego is one step closer to approving the 6.5M purchase of two hotels to permanently house homeless people living in the convention center.When the pandemic hit in March, the Bridge Shelters and Golden Hall were cleared out and about a thousand people were brought into the convention center, according to the mayor's office.The emergency setup allowed for proper social distancing, and resources to request PPE and other supplies.The convention center will be emptied in December to prepare to open for events when it is safe.Since the pandemic, downtown has looked different according to Marshall Anderson, Vice President of Government Affairs with the Downtown San Diego Partnership."I would encourage all of you to walk around downtown so you can see just about how safe and livable it is at the moment ... For too long has downtown acted as the region's homeless shelter. It's nice to see another neighborhood bearing some of the responsibility for sheltering some of our most vulnerable," he said.The city plans to buy two Residence Inn hotels, one in Kearney Mesa, the other in Mission Valley. Together the hotels could house about 400 people and support tenants who are accessing services for mental health and substance abuse issues.During the city's Public Safety and Livable Communities Committee Meeting Wednesday, Mission Valley neighbors voiced their complaints."It's a bad idea, I am absolutely opposed to this project," a man who has lived in Mission Valley for 30 years said."My real concern is obviously the safety of my community but also the safety of the potential residents ... I am just opposed to this idea because it doesn't seem practical for the city and I feel like it opens the city up to a lot of liability in terms of motorist versus pedestrian accidents," a woman living in the same neighborhood added. She is concerned there is not enough transit or pedestrian infrastructure in the area.The people who would move into the hotels, according to the mayor's office, are stable and already accessing services for mental health and substance abuse.
