ZAGREB, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao's just concluded three-nation tour is "very successful" in enhancing friendship, boosting cooperation and promoting common development with relevant countries, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said Saturday.     During the tour from June 14 to June 20, President Hu attended the ninth annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the first BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) summit in Yekaterinburg, Russia, and paid state visits to Russia, Slovakia and Croatia.     Hu's tour took place amid the complicated and changing international situation, while the global financial crisis continues to spread, regional security faces new challenges, and various countries share stronger will to deepen cooperation and promote development, Yang said.     The tour was a significant diplomatic move taken by China to develop relations with neighboring countries, major developing countries as well as Central and Eastern European countries, said Yang.     He said the tour has made successful achievements in four major areas. BEIJING, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Wednesday China's economy is at a critical moment as it begins to recover "steadily".     Wen told an executive meeting of the State Council, China's Cabinet, that economic performance had started to show positive changes, favorable factors were increasing, the overall situation had stabilized and was moving upwards.     He said the government should continue a pro-active fiscal policy and moderately relaxed monetary policy.     Investment growth kept accelerating, consumption maintained a rapid and steady increase, and domestic demand played a stronger role in boosting economic growth, said Wen.     Agricultural and industrial production grew, and regional coordinated development was making progress, said Wen.     The financial market was stable, and investor confidence stronger. Urban employment kept rising, and reconstruction of areas affected by last year's May 12 earthquake was speeding up, said Wen.     Government measures to fight the global economic crisis proved correct and effective, and should continue to be implemented and improved according to the changing situation, he said.     But it should also be noted that the foundation for economic recovery was not stable and many uncertainties remained, said Wen, citing sluggish exports, the fiscal deficit and trade protectionism.     Wen called for clear-headed judgment and readiness for difficulties and complexities that might occur in the long term.     He urged local governments to further promote economic restructuring, guarantee the stable development of agriculture, encourage technological innovation and work to enhance energy conservation and environmental protection.     Comprehensive efforts should be made to boost domestic demand to power economic growth, Wen said, singling out such measures as subsidies for home appliances and automobiles in rural areas.     Housing consumption should be properly guided and the stable, healthy development of the property market should be ensured, said Wen, adding that tourism, entertainment and cultural consumption should be developed.     Central government-invested programs should be carefully carried out, while private investment should be expanded, said Wen.     He also highlighted the importance of the coordinated development of urban and rural areas, called for the further deepening of reform and opening up and the building of social insurance systems.

BEIJING, May 14 (Xinhua) -- Two revised rules involving a planned Nasdaq-style stock market, the Growth Enterprise Market (GEM), will take effect on June 14, according to the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) Thursday.     The two rules involve establishing an independent committee to approve listings for the GEM and the management of sponsors of IPOs.     The two rules are taken as a key step closer toward introducing the much-anticipated GEM, a board intended to nurture innovation-driven start-ups as the government tries to help smaller companies get financing and encourage technological advances.     The rules are the same as the drafts issued on April 17 to solicit public opinions, said the CSRC.     Under the rules, the new panel will have 35 members. Five will come from the CSRC and the others from the accounting, law and other sectors. The panel won't include members of the review panel for IPO application on the main board.     Under the rules, the sponsors of IPOs on the GEM are required to monitor the companies' performance for three years, up from two for companies on the main board.

BEIJING, May 3 (Xinhua) -- China's retail sales climbed 9 percent from a year ago to about 12 billion yuan (1.76 billion U.S. dollars) during the three-day May Day holiday, the Ministry of Commerce said Sunday.     The estimate was based on sales from May 1 to May 3 at 1,000 major domestic retailers monitored by the ministry.     The ministry said robust sales were reported for gold, jewelry, home appliances and autos, as retailers launched promotion campaigns.     Sales of gold and other jewelry rose 19.6 percent, the ministry said, without giving specific figures.     However, it said the Beijing Caishikou Department Store, a major gold retailer in the capital, saw its sales nearly double to 14.3 million yuan on May 1 alone.     Sales of appliances, such as LCD TVs, air conditioners, refrigerators and lap-tops, increased 11.4 percent, while those of automobiles grew 9.2 percent.
