EL CAJON (KGTV) - An El Cajon family says a drive to see a fireworks show turned into a racially motivated nightmare, ending in a mob of people ripping off their car door.On July 4th, just before 9 p.m., William Gavin, his fiancee Alana Christman and their two children - a 6-year-old girl and a two-year-old boy - were driving on Lima Court, looking for Kennedy park and the fireworks show."Looking down at my GPS, when I hear, 'You can't come into our neighborhood,'" said Christman.Christman, who was in the front passenger seat, looked up."Caught someone at the corner of my eye. Saw this flame on my chest and it started throwing embers," said Christman.A cigarette had flown in through an open window. Gavin, who is African American, says he stopped the car, got out and saw the man who tossed the cigarette: a white man in his 50s. Gavin asked him a question."'Why would you do that?' Then he's coming at me ... He takes a swing at me, and I throw him down. Got into my car because my children are screaming," said Gavin.Christman says what happened next was surreal and scary."Completely freaked out. A lot of adrenaline and just upset for my kids," said Christman.She says 5 to 6 white men, many holding beer bottles, started yelling and attacking the vehicle."Reaching into my car and they were hitting him. There's a hinge on my door that's ripped off. The door was ripped off," said Christman.Gavin believes the attack was racially motivated."I know when something's racial, I know when someone is aiming at me. I moved away from Mississippi to get away from this nonsense," said Gavin.Eventually, Gavin drove off, parked around the corner and quickly called police. He says a Hispanic family approached, claiming the men just targeted them."They were throwing water bottles at their car saying they can't be in their neighborhood," said Gavin.The couple says police told them the man who threw the cigarette would be cited for misdemeanor assault."I want justice to start happening, I want things to start happening the right away," said Gavin.The couple says they're frustrated at police for not interviewing the Hispanic family or the angry group of neighbors.A police spokesperson says the man accused of tossing the cigarette is a suspect involving a misdemeanor charge of throwing an object at a vehicle. Police say many witnesses had left a chaotic scene and the investigation is ongoing. They tell 10News there were complaints of the couple speeding, and a hit-and-run involving a pedestrian suffering minor injuries, an allegation the couple denies. 2578

During Tuesday’s Supreme Court confirmation hearing, Sen. Lindsey Graham said “good old days of segregation” in a question to nominee Amy Comey Barrett when discussing a landmark 1954 high court ruling.On Wednesday, Graham claimed the comment was made in sarcasm."If anybody was listening to who I am and what I said, you know that it was the deep sarcasm that I suggested that some legislative body would want to yearn for the good old days of segregation,” Graham said on Wednesday. “The point that I'm trying to make is there is nobody in America in the legislative arena, wanting to take us back to that dark period in American history.”During Tuesday’s questioning, Graham asked, "And one of the reasons you can say with confidence that you think Brown versus Board of Education is super precedent is that you’re not aware of any effort to go back to the good old days of segregation by a legislative body, is that correct?"Graham is an unexpectedly tight race against Democrat Jamie Harrison for his seat in South Carolina. "This is all political," McConnell said, adding the city should focus more on permanent solutions. "There's nothing wrong with giving people access to a shelter, but once they're in that shelter that can't be their home. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - A possible vehicle break-in led to a deadly shooting in the East County early Sunday.El Cajon Police received a report of shots fired just after 1 a.m. near West Chase Avenue in El Cajon. Police said a homeowner was woken up by the sound of his dogs barking in the 1100 block of Mona Place and looked outside to see someone trying to break into his vehicle.The homeowner retrieved his handgun and went outside to confront the 32-year-old suspect, police said.A confrontation between the two occurred and the homeowner shot at the suspect multiple times, police said, striking him at least once.The suspect then took off in his own vehicle and crashed into the driveway of a nearby home in the 1000 block of West Chase Ave. Officers arrived to find him dead of a gunshot wound.Police have not released the identity of the homeowner or suspect. The homeowner is cooperating with officers. It's not yet clear if that person will face any criminal charges as a result of the shooting. 1054

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- Two firefighters were injured fighting a blaze that sparked near El Cajon Wednesday afternoon according to Cal Fire. Cal Fire says the blaze started on the 5500 block of Dehesa Road around 4 p.m. and burned 25 acres. As of 6:40 p.m. Wednesday, the fire is 50 percent contained. An incident report shows that two firefighters were injured, though the extent of their injuries was unclear. The blaze did for a brief time threaten structures, but none were damaged. Due to the blaze, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department evacuated Vista De La Montana east of Dehesa Road. Evacuation warnings were also issued for Trafalgar Road, Calle De Nicole, and Vista De La Montana. The agency tweeted just before 7 p.m. that all evacuation orders and warnings had been lifted. #VistaFire [update] All evacuation warnings have been lifted for Vista De La Montana, Trasalger Rd, and Calle De Nicole.
