BEIJING, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin has called on overseas-educated Chinese talents to contribute to the country's development by returning home and starting businesses.Jia, also a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks in his letter to Wednesday's award ceremony here for the first "Teng fei" awards.The China Western-returned Scholar Entrepreneur "Teng Fei" Award was designed to honor and reward those returned overseas-educated Chinese who had grown into enterprises leaders.The award was given to 50 excellent enterprises, 10 enterprises with vast potential, and 10 outstanding entrepreneurs.Han Qide, president of the award's co-organizer, the Western Returned Scholars Association, explained that the underlying purpose of the award was to provide a platform to promote understanding and exchange of experiences among those returnees, and to encourage, support and help more of them to launch their own careers.

JINAN, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Police in east China's Shandong Province said Saturday that one of the two killers who shot dead four policemen on Jan. 4 had also murdered another man before the gunfight.Liu Jianjun, 50, allegedly killed one man on Dec. 29 last year in Dezhou City of Shandong.Liu and his 52-year-old brother Liu Lumin shot at policemen who were investigating the Dec. 29 murder case in Tai'an City of the province on Jan. 4 .Three policemen were killed at the scene, and another died later in the hospital.After gunning down the officers, the two men fled the scene, hijacking four cars and shooting two drivers before their car collided with a police wagon.The gunmen, armed with a homemade pistol and a double-barreled shotgun, continued to fire after police had cornered them, injuring more policemen and civilians.Liu Lumin then shot and killed himself while Liu Jianjun was taken into custody.

YINCHUAN, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- Millions of Chinese Muslims across the country celebrated the tradition of Corban on Tuesday and Wednesday.In northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, 76-year-old Liu Wenming attended a religious ceremony at the Nanguan Mosque in the regional capital, Yinchuan, Wednesday morning, along with some 10,000 Muslims."My son, daughter and grandchildren will come from different parts of Ningxia to have a family lunch with me. Then we will visit other relatives and friends," said Liu.In Qinghai Province, also in the northwest, many Muslims began to gather at the Dongguan Mosque in the provincial capital Xining before 8 a.m. Tuesday. SINGAPORE, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- In celebration of the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Singapore and China, a dedicated marker to commemorate late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping was unveiled here on Sunday.The marker, which sits beside the Singapore River, was unveiled by Singapore Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew and Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, who is here on a three-day official visit.The marker comprises a text panel and a bronze bust of Deng commissioned by the Chinese Embassy to Singapore. BEIJING, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government will increase grain supplies to meet people's needs and stabilize market prices, the nation's grain authorities said Friday.The government will also sell a set amount of cooking vegetable oil and soybeans from its reserves beginning next week, in addition to the weekly policy-oriented sales of wheat, rice and corn that has already begun, the State Administration of Grain said in a statement posted on its website Friday.The authority will also send groups of staff to major grain production regions to inspect and guide purchases of autumn grain and regulate business practices, according to the statement.The move was in line with the government's efforts to protect farmers' interests and maintain moderate prices in the grain market, the statement said.China's State Council, or the Cabinet, said Wednesday that it would impose temporary price controls on important daily necessities and production materials when necessary, and urged local authorities to offer temporary subsidies to needy families.It also ordered efforts be implemented to ensure market supplies and strengthen market supervision.These steps were introduced after China's consumer price index (CPI), a major gauge of inflation, rose to a 25-month high of 4.4 percent in October. The increase was mainly pushed up by the 10.1 percent surge in food prices, which accounts for one-third of the basket of goods used to calculate the country's CPI.
