Sexually transmitted diseases are on the rise across the country. A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found combined cases of syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia reached an all-time high in the United States in 2018.In Humboldt County, California, health officials say sexually transmitted diseases have been on the rise for five years in a row. “We went from 434 chlamydia cases in 2014 to 790 in 2018,” said Hava Phillips of Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services. “But last year, we saw sharper spike in HIV and syphilis.”We’re learning Humboldt County’s STD statistics mirror national numbers. According to the CDC, from 2017 to 2018, gonorrhea cases increased 5 percent to more than 580,000 cases.During the same time, reported chlamydia cases increased 3 percent to more than 1.7 million cases – that’s the most ever reported to CDC.And perhaps the most concerning number: syphilis cases among newborns increased 40 percent to more than 1,300 cases.“No one has boyfriends and girlfriends anymore; it’s like major hook up culture,” one Humboldt County man said. “That could be one reason why we are having higher STDs now.” With the reasons ranging from more people getting tested to fewer people using condoms, cuts to public health services and online dating are thought to be a big factors as well.“We are seeing changes cultural attitudes towards sex,” Phillips said. “We are seeing the availability of things like social networking applications that allow for meeting anonymous partners more easily.”To help slow down the spread of STDs, Humboldt County Health is spreading their message both online and in person with coasters warning people about the increase in STDs. “The idea was to make sure that people were aware that we were seeing an increase in syphilis cases and they can protect themselves better,” Phillips said. Reverend Robert McWillams was arrested Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Strongsville, Ohio, for allegedly possessing child porn. "In a parish that you know and that you go to and people you trust,” parishioner Jennifer Herold said. According to the criminal complaint against McWilliams, he was in possession three separate times—the first instance in 2016, again in 2018 and then once more just this year. "In the catholic church you’ve heard these things go on in many different places all over the world and to think it's actually happening in your parish or in your area it's kind of shocking,” Herold said. Herold and her family go to St. Joseph. Her son is in the Parish School of Religion program. She said she asked him if he ever made contact with the accused Reverend. "I did ask him if he’d seen him before and he had not,” Herold said. "It does bring up conversations that you need to have with your kids about these kinds of dangers and what they should do, who they should talk to.” Herold said she wants action. "We need to be proactive and it just can’t be kind of swept under the rug,” Herold said. She also wants the church to talk about these things more. "I think it's hard for tradition, it’s hard for history to really kind of break the ceiling here and really come into the modern era and figure out okay, there’s a problem we need to deal with it,” Herold said. "He’ll still continue to go and we’ll still continue to follow our faith but I do think that doesn't mean that nothing needs to change.” According to the Cleveland Diocese, McWillams was a chaperone at at least one overnight trip at Camp Christopher. Nearly 66 percent of Americans used private insurance in 2017, according to U.S. Census figures. Also, a number of Americans are employed by insurance companies. According to the Insurance Information Institute, more than 500,000 Americans are employed in the insurance industry. These facts are not lost on Biden, who advocated at Thursday's debate to maintain the private insurance system."I think the Obamacare worked," Biden said at Thursday's debate. "I think the way we add to it, replace everything that has been cut, add a public option, guarantee that everyone will be able to have affordable insurance, number one."Warren claimed during Thursday's debate that a Medicare-for-All system would lower overall costs."And the answer is on Medicare for All, costs are going to go up for wealthier individuals and costs are going to go up for giant corporations," Warren said. "But for hard-working families across this country, costs are going to go down and that's how it should work under Medicare for All in our health care system."The Congressional Budget Office released a report in May on the total cost of moving to a government-run healthcare system. The report says that nearly half of healthcare expenses in the U.S. come from the private sector, with the rest being funded through federal, state and local governments. Overall, Americans spend .5 trillion in healthcare per year, the CBO says. But the CBO could not put an estimate on exactly how much the average person would spend with a Medicare-for-All system. The report says a number of factors such as whether state governments will pay into the system, and whether citizens can opt out of public insurance all options would affect costs. The CBO states that the federal government has lower administrative costs than private insurance. The cost to administer all of Medicare was 6 percent, compared to 12 percent for private insurers in 2017, the CBO says. The CBO added that administrative costs could decrease even further as a Medicare-for-All system would have fewer eligibility exclusions. Although both Biden and Warren still lack key details for their plans, Biden has stated his goal is to have 97 percent of Americans insured. Warren claims that nearly 100 percent is possible with her plan. As of 2017, 91 percent of Americans were insured. The number of uninsured in 2010, at the time of Obamacare's passage, was nearly double, according to the Census. Even without changes to law, healthcare costs will likely rise in the U.S. Government estimates peg healthcare spending per year at trillion by 2027. STEUBEN COUNTY, Ind. – A suspected car thief was arrested after authorities say he was caught using a homemade license plate, drawn in crayon on a paper grocery bag. On Thursday, Indiana State Police say troopers stopped to lend a hand to 20-year-old Joshua Anthony Lewis-Brown when they spotted him stranded along the I-80 Toll Road. Initially, officers found Lewis-Brown tending to a flat tire on a Toyota Corolla. The man said he was unable to change the tire and he was in need of a tow truck. Preparing to oblige Lewis-Brown’s request, police say troopers spotted the suspicious license plate on the car and began to investigate further. Officers ran a check on the vehicle identification number (VIN) and discovered the Corolla had been reported stolen out of State College, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday. They also found that the driver, a resident of Rochester, New York, had never actually been licensed to operate a motor vehicle in any state and was on probation for grand larceny. Lewis-Brown was placed under arrest and transported him to the Steuben County Jail, where he was booked and charged with possession of stolen property and operating without ever obtaining a license. He’ll be held on the Indiana charges before being extradited back to Pennsylvania to face local charges.Police say the stolen vehicle had been left unattended and unlocked with the engine running outside a Pennsylvania grocery store.
