SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - More than 100 migrants detained in Texas were flown to San Diego's Lindbergh Field Friday for processing due to a backlog in the Rio Grande Valley sector, U.S. Border Patrol officials said. “Currently, ICE aircraft are providing flights from RGV Sector to Del Rio and San Diego Sectors. We are also transporting individuals from Yuma Sector to El Centro Sector and from the Rio Grande Valley Sector to the Laredo Sector by bus. These are additional steps DHS is taking to mitigate the challenges posed by the unprecedented number of people in CBP custody,” said Theron Francisco, Acting Supervisory Border Patrol Agent. Once in San Diego, the migrants were transported from the airport to the Border Patrol’s Brown Field Station in the South Bay. According to acting San Diego Border Patrol Chief Doug Harrison, the migrants will go through general processing and screening, with the hopes of adhering to the national 20-day detention rule. The detention rule states migrant families cannot be held in detention for more than 20 days. After the initial screening at the border station, Immigration and Customs Enforcement will take over processing. Prior to the Texas-to-San Diego transfer, the selected migrants -- most of them being families -- went through health screenings to determine if they were healthy enough for travel. Harrison said there will be three flights per week, with the planes being ICE-contracted commercial charter flights. Harrison added the Rio Grande Valley facility is 200 percent over capacity, making the transfer of migrants to San Diego necessary. “We got to give the people in Rio Grande Valley some relief,” he said. In addition to San Diego, Harrison said it’s possible that migrants from Texas could be transferred to border stations in Detroit, Buffalo and Miami. According to Harrison, as of May 10, border agents have apprehended over 500,000 migrants who have entered the U.S. illegally -- an average of over 4,500 per day. 1991

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Photos captured along the shores of San Diego show the return of a bioluminescent glow cause by a phenomenon known as the red tide. Pictures posted on social media show the eerie neon glow. According to several San Diego photographers who captured the phenomenon, the bioluminescence was captured along the shores of La Jolla and Torrey Pines State Beach Wednesday night. The glow is created by an algae bloom called the red tide. The algae bloom is filled with phytoplankton called "dinoflagellates.” The organisms react with bioluminescence when jostled by the moving water. "Where the wave crashes onto the shore, as it rolls over that’s where the turbulence is highest," said Clarissa Anderson at The Scripps Instutition of Oceanography. "That’s why those are really bright stripes of light. We don’t know the exact smoking gun yet. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Point Loma families fighting to preserve a makeshift bike track are up against another setback.The land is owned by the San Diego Housing Commission, which recently hired an independent firm to do a feasibility study of the property. The firm looked at traffic, environmental factors, and the impact on schools; ultimately concluding it's feasible to build on the site. "Definitely heartbroken, this is such a special spot for our community," said Darren Miller, who often brings his boys to ride on the track. But Rick Gentry, President and CEO of the San Diego Housing Commission, says it's their job to create as much affordable housing in the city as possible. There are currently 80,000 people waiting for a Section 8 Housing Voucher. "The neighbors don't like to see the neighborhoods change, but change is going to happen, growth is going to occur. San Diego now is not producing enough housing to keep up with the rate of growth of the population," said Gentry. Miller and other neighbors have serious concerns about building on the land. "I don't know if they're necessarily opposed to affordable housing, I think they're just opposed to more development in an area that's already over-developed. In addition to just being an open space, it's a wetland," said Miller. The Housing Commission will be seeking developers for the project. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One person was killed and five people were injured after a crash near Scripps Ranch Sunday afternoon.The crash happened around 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of Pomerado Road and Avenue of Nations near Thurgood Marshall Middle School.Police said an 18-year-old driver and one passenger in a gray BMW were heading home from a basketball tournament when they swerved into oncoming traffic.They crashed into a white Chevy with four people inside, all between the ages of 70 and 90.The driver of the Chevy sedan, a 90-year-old woman, died from her injuries, police said.At least five ambulances were requested at the scene, according to authorities.The cause of the crash is unknown at this time, but the driver told police he had mechanical trouble with his brakes. Alcohol and drugs are not considered a factor in the accident, police said.   917
