Gavin Newsom signed landmark legislation allowing student athletes to get paid for their name, image and likeness.In approving the legislation, the governor noted multi-million dollar television deals and highly paid administrators, but no payment for athletes."Colleges reap billions from these student athletes' sacrifices and success but, in the same breath, block them from earning a single dollar," Newsom said in a statement. "That’s a bankrupt model – one that puts institutions ahead of the students they are supposed to serve. It needs to be disrupted.”NCAA rules render student athletes ineligible if they sign with an agent or take endorsement money. The organization said in a statement that changes are needed, but it should not be a state-by-state approach. "As more states consider their own specific legislation related to this topic, it is clear that a patchwork of different laws from different states will make unattainable the goal of providing a fair and level playing field for 1,100 campuses and nearly half a million student-athletes nationwide," the NCAA said. (KGTV) — California voters have rejected a measure that would reinstate affirmative action based on race and gender.Proposition 16 would have ended the ban on affirmative action, allowing state and local entities to consider race, sex, color, ethnicity, and national origin in public education, public employment, and public contracting — to the extent allowed under federal and state law.Californians voted against the measure 56% to 44%, with 72% of precincts reporting.Critics of the proposition pointed to a previous prop, Prop 209, as to why Californians should vote against it.“The state shall not discriminate against, or grant preferential treatment to, any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin, in the operation of public employment, public education, and public contracting,” opposition stated in reference to a passage from Prop 209. 899

(KGTV) — A 0,000 truck belonging to DJ Marshmellow was stolen Wednesday before the suspect led authorities on a pursuit from Malibu to the San Fernando Valley and crashed.California Highway Patrol said the suspect was seen driving on the wrong side of Malibu Canyon Rd. around 9:40 p.m. and led CHP officers on a chase along eastbound 101 Freeway. Eventually, the suspect exited the freeway in Sherman Oaks, before traveling into Van Nuys.The suspect drove through the parking lot of a Taco Bell restaurant, before crashing the truck into a light pole near the intersection of Coldwater Canyon Ave. and Vanowen St. at about 10:10 p.m. The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Edward Cruz, surrendered peacefully to CHP after crashing. He was booked on suspicion of grand theft auto and felony evading police, according to the Los Angeles Times. (KGTV) — A Los Angeles-area police pursuit ended late Tuesday with a suspect breakdancing as officers held him a gunpoint before being arrested.The chase took California Highway Patrol officers through the San Fernando Valley after the suspect failed to yield to commands to stop, according to ABC-affiliate KABC.Officers pursued the suspect over the 101 Freeway, north on the 405 Freeway, and then east onto the 118 Freeway.As the driver slowed in the Pacoima area, officers were able to enact a PIT maneuver and spin the suspect's vehicle out.The driver exited the vehicle and began walking backward toward CHP officers. But before turning himself over, he stopped and began breakdancing in the street, as officers kept their firearms trained on the man.After a short dance, the man surrendered to police without incident. 832
