SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man under arrest was hospitalized Sunday night after San Diego Police said he slipped out of his handcuffs and got a hold of an officer's gun, leading to an officer-involved shooting at the department's downtown headquarters.According to police, a 25-year-old Hispanic man was arrested shortly after 6:20 p.m. after an incident at a downtown San Diego hotel. A hotel security guard reported the man was “acting strange” and threatening others.Officers took the man to SDPD headquarters on 1401 Broadway, but just after 8 p.m. police said the man somehow freed himself from his handcuffs while inside the patrol SUV, and then broke a divider that separates the prisoner seat area from the cargo area.Police said it was in the cargo area were the man located an officer’s backpack that contained a backup handgun.Officers went to check on the arrestee after hearing noise and saw that he was still in the vehicle but armed with a gun. Officers drew their weapons but backed up from the car.Police said, “Officers gave the male commands to drop the weapon, but he refused to do so. The male fired at least one round from the handgun.”The officers felt threatened at that point, prompting them to fire at least one round, hitting the man at least once in the torso.According to police, “The male reached out the car window, opened the door and exited the patrol vehicle. He was still armed with the handgun and would not comply with officers’ directions. The male tried to open both the rear cargo compartment and the driver’s door of the patrol vehicle, despite officers’ orders to stop. Because he still posed a threat, a Police Service Dog was deployed on the male. The canine bit the male and officers were able to approach and subdue him. The male was still armed with the handgun at the time of his arrest.”After officers provided aid to the man at the scene, he was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to police.SDPD’s Homicide Unit is investigating the officer-involved shooting.Police stated the following information in a news release:“The names of the officers involved in this incident are not being released at this time, but they have been with the department for 8 years, 6 years and 10 months, respectively.The investigation and review process for an officer-involved shooting is extremely thorough. When the Homicide Unit completes their investigation, it will be reviewed by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office to determine if the officers bear any criminal liability for their actions. The Internal Affairs Unit will conduct an investigation to determine if there were any policy violations, and the Shooting Review Board will evaluate the tactics used by the officers. The Community Review Board on Police Practices will conduct a review of the incident and provide any appropriate recommendations. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man was hospitalized after becoming stuck in a cargo elevator shaft at a downtown grocery store.San Diego Fire-Rescue was called to Ralph's grocery store on G St. just after 7:30 p.m. on Saturday to a report of someone stuck in the elevator. Crews arrived to find a man who had been working on the elevator trapped in the elevator shaft.Firefighters worked to free the man and take him to a nearby hospital. The extent of his injuries wasn't immediately known.A witness who works at the grocery store said the man was working on the cargo shaft when someone pressed the elevator button, trapping the man inside. 640

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A life-changing medical diagnosis forced a San Diego sailor to leave the military and start over. While devastating, he's now pursuing another career with help from his new best friend. "When I left the ship and went to MCRD I started getting really sick and thought it was the flu," said Hugo Reynoso.Instead, Reynoso was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and was medically retired from the Navy. "It's kind of scary having a steady paycheck and then going to have to look for something else," said Reynoso.On several occasions, dangerously high blood sugar levels sent Reynoso to the hospital. A friend suggested he get a diabetic alert dog. "He has enough personality for the both of us! He's a special character," said Reynoso, referring to his service dog Sky.Sky can detect when Reynoso's blood sugar levels are too high or low, alerting him by tugging his shirt or howling. In one instance, Sky detected extremely low levels when Reynoso was sleeping, alerting him to get up. Sky was by Reynoso's side as he pursued a new career in the automotive field. Reynoso was commuting two hours to Universal Technical Institute (UTI) in Rancho Cucamonga for a fast-track program. "I was commuting 167 miles, one way, I would have to wake up around 2:30 a.m., start my drive at 3," said Reynoso.Reynoso did this five times a week, running on just a few hours of sleep. Sky was there to ensure his blood sugar levels were steady. "Everyone told me when we were getting ready to graduate that they were going to miss me, but mostly they were going to miss him because he was their support too."While Reynoso's diagnosis took away his old dreams, he now has a partner to help achieve new ones. 1711

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A jury deadlocked Friday on two key charges regarding a drunk driving crash that killed a Lyft driver on SR-94.Steven Quintero was charged with six counts including murder and gross vehicular manslaughter in the Oct. 1 death of 41-year-old Henry Reyes of Escondido.The jury reached verdicts on four counts, finding Quintero guilty of DUI causing injury, DUI, hit and run with death, and driving on a suspended license. The judge declared a mistrial on the murder and gross vehicular manslaughter charges.RELATED: Testimony in Lyft?driver's death continuesReyes was taking three women home from a night downtown when the crash happened. One of the women became ill and Reyes pulled over on the shoulder of SR-94 near 28th St. to give her some water.Minutes later, the Lyft car was hit from behind by Quintero’s car. Reyes, an aspiring dentist and the father of a 2-year-old child, was killed as he walked around the car to get back in."I was hit so hard I didn't know where I was," said passenger Kelly Hoffman, who was on the phone in the backseat when the collision occurred. Hoffman testified that she had a broken bone of the top of her foot, whiplash of the neck, and a concussion.Passenger Sarah Smith, who had cuts to her chin, a neck injury and a bruised spine, said she has no memory of the crash.At Quintero's arraignment, Deputy District Attorney Cally Bright said the murder count was warranted because a previous charge of driving under the influence was filed against the defendant in November 2015, and because he allegedly left the scene of the fatal crash. 1604

Ashley Goggins is a prime example and is one of over 8 million people in the United States who work remotely. “I’m a customer success manager for a software company,” says Goggins.Her company is headquartered in Chicago, but Ashley does her job from her living room in San Diego. “I typically wake up around 6:00 in the morning, and my calls start coming in around 6:30,” adds Goggins. “The great part about that is I don’t have to spend time getting ready, eating breakfast right away, or sitting in the car.”Goggins is part of a growing trend. Especially in the employment sectors of management, business, and science where working remotely is a valuable option for some employees. “Many industries that are prevalent in San Diego lend themselves to remote work,” says Kevin Fowler. Kevin Fowler is a writer for Volusion and author of the study. His research shows San Diego is one of the top cities in the nation when it comes to employees working remotely full-time.
