NEW YORK CITY — Fire marshals arrested a 36-year-old man accused of setting off fireworks that burned down a Brooklyn home last month, officials said Thursday.Officials said that the video shows Damien Bend igniting the illegal fireworks on June 24. Bend is charged with arson, FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said."Illegal fireworks pose significant dangers to the safety of New Yorkers and their property," Nigro said. "Our Fire Marshals will continue to actively enforce the laws relating to illegal possession and sales of fireworks in New York City."Bend allegedly set off numerous fireworks, sending one of them through a window at around 9:25 p.m. last Friday night. Officials say he continued to light them, even as flames could be seen through the window of the 51st Street home.Video shows that one of the people with Bend appeared to be smoking a cigarette and filming himself as he shot off the fireworks. His friend, also filming himself, eventually noticed the house was burning at 9:32 p.m. — about seven minutes after the fire started. The video showed one of the men trying to contain the fire with a garden hose, to no avail."They were doing it in such a confined area it was just bound to happen," said FDNY Captain Michael Koco, director of safety education. "It was a recipe for disaster."The FDNY has set up one of a number of informational booths across the city to inform residents of the dangers of setting off fireworks, given the dramatic spike in complaints."A lot of times, the people that are being harmed are the bystanders," Koco said.In the last nine days, fire marshals in New York have arrested 17 people and confiscated nearly ,000 worth of illegal fireworks. It took 60 firefighters to knock down the blaze started by fireworks at 51st Street."They're illegal for a reason," Koco said. "You're talking about explosives. So you need someone who's a professional to handle them."This story was originally published by Aliza Chasan and Cristian Benavides on WPIX in New York City. 2021

NEW YORK (AP) — Disney will sprinkle its pixie dust on the streaming arena Tuesday, as its Disney Plus service debuts with an arsenal of marquee franchises including Marvel and Star Wars, original series with a built-in fan base and a cheap price to boot. The -a-month commercial-free service is poised to set the standard for other services like WarnerMedia's HBO Max and NBCUniversal's Peacock to follow, as major media companies behind hit TV shows and movies seek to siphon the subscription revenue now going to Netflix and other streaming giants.Disney's properties speak to its strengths. Besides classic characters such as Snow White and Pinocchio, Disney has Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic — big names that most people would recognize. Disney Plus will also have all 30 past seasons of "The Simpsons." Original shows include "The Mandalorian," set in the Star Wars universe, and one on the Marvel character Loki.RELATED: Southern California theme parks bring holiday cheer to guestsMelissa Knerr, 26, a criminal defense attorney in Springfield, Missouri, already has Hulu, Netflix and Amazon Prime and wasn't sure she wanted to pay for another one. She said she was swayed by Disney Plus's price tag and its "sheer amount of content.""I really love both the Star Wars and Marvel franchises and I grew up watching classic Disney shows and movies so I do think there will be enough content for me," she said.Marlina Yates, who works in marketing in Kansas City, said she signed up because of her husband's enthusiasm about the Star Wars series "The Mandalorian" and her daughter's "love affair with princesses and everything Disney."Disney Plus's a month price is about half of the Netflix charges for its most popular plan, and there are discounts for paying for a full year up front. Disney is also offering a package bundling Disney Plus with two other services it owns, Hulu and ESPN Plus. That's cheaper than signing up for each one individually.RELATED: Spider-Man will stay in Marvel Cinematic Universe as Sony, Disney reach dealEverything won't be available to stream right away, though, as Disney needs to wait for existing deals with rival services to expire. Recent movies missing at launch include the animated Pixar movie "Coco" and the live-action "Beauty and the Beast." Others like "Maleficent: Mistress of Evil" haven't been released for streaming yet. Disney expects 620 movies and 10,000 TV episodes by 2024, up from 500 movies and 7,500 episodes on Tuesday.Disney has said that it is losing about 0 million in licensing revenue in the most recent fiscal year from terminating deals with Netflix and other services. But Disney is betting that what it makes through subscriptions will more than make up for that — at least eventually.Disney is boosting its subscription base initially with heavy promos, much as Apple TV Plus has done and HBO Max and Peacock plan to do. Members of Disney's free D23 fan club were eligible to buy three years of Disney Plus service up front for the price of two years. Customers of some Verizon wireless and home-internet plans can get a year free. The hope is that subscribers will stick around once they see what the service offers.Long-term success is by no means guaranteed. With a slew of services launching, subscription fees can add up quickly. Consumers might be reluctant to drop an existing service such as Netflix or Amazon Prime to pay for something untested.RELATED: Marvel-themed land to open in 2020 at Disney's California Adventure Park"I can't keep up with so many services. It gets expensive," said William Pearson, a Drexel University student who describes himself as a "massive" Marvel fan but already pays for Netflix, HBO and the DC Comics streaming service. But compared with other newcomers, experts believe Disney will have no problem gaining — and keeping — the 60 million to 90 million worldwide subscribers it is targeting for 2024. It took Netflix twice as long to get to 90 million."Disney Plus has a gigantic array of content and a library that's unmatched, so it feels like an easy addition for consumers to get a gigantic library at that low price," said Tim Hanlon, CEO of Vertere Group.Bernie McTernan, internet and media analyst at Rosenblatt Securities, said Apple's venture into streaming, Apple TV Plus, has to build brand recognition for its new shows, while viewers may have difficulties seeing what HBO Max offers beyond the standard HBO subscription.Disney said it was pleased with a recent test in the Netherlands, in which consumers got to try the service for free, without original content or full library of classics."The service connected with users across all four quadrants, male and female, adults and kids, driven by the breadth of our content and the affinity people have with it," Disney CEO Bob Iger told financial analysts Thursday.Connor Clifton, 29, from Houston, Texas, said he is looking forward to "The Mandalorian" Star Wars series as well as catching up on recent Pixar films."Paying for individual channels is frustrating," he said, "but I want to see the content so I'm willing to pay for it." 5157

NEW YORK — Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the passage of legislation that prohibits domestic abusers from possessing handguns and long guns as part of his 2018 Women's Agenda.Previously, there was a loophole in which domestic abusers only had to surrender handguns, they must now surrender all firearms."The recent wave of mass shootings is horrifying, and the federal government's failure to act on any form of meaningful gun safety laws is unconscionable," Governor Cuomo said. "New York is once again leading the way to prevent gun violence, and with this common sense reform, break the inextricable link between gun violence and domestic violence. This legislation builds on our gun laws -- already the strongest in the nation-- to make New York safer and stronger." New York law previously prohibited the possession of firearms for those convicted of a felony or a limited number of misdemeanor "serious" offenses. This legislation expands the list of "serious" crimes, which will lead to the loss of a gun license and the surrender of all firearms for those who are convicted. This legislation will also restrict any individual with an arrest warrant from obtaining or renewing a firearm license which was previously not the case.Governor Cuomo cites the fact that in nine of the last 10 mass shootings, the shooter had an existing record of committing or threatening violence against women or harassing them. 1447

NEW YORK CITY — The principals and teachers unions are calling for New York City to delay school reopening for at least a month. While most major cities have opted to start the school year virtually, New York City still plans on resuming in-person. Mayor Bill de Blasio responded while touring Village Academy in Far Rockaway, Queens on Wednesday with Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza."Unions will always sound various alarms and unions will say things sometimes in a very dramatic fashion, this is nothing new in New York City," de Blasio said. "But the question is really, what is the mission? The mission is to take care of our kids."Jacob Stebel, a high school film teacher in the Bronx, said a pod system, where students would be taught in groups in a single classroom, won’t work with high schoolers.“Students will be grouped by the classes they have to take together, instead of students moving from classroom to classroom, teachers are moving from classroom to classroom," Stebel said. That would put him in six to seven different classrooms a day with just as many groups of students.“If I have to go into eight different classrooms a day, I have to set up my materials again,” he said.According to the mayor and city’s top educator, with a month to go, they’re still working through the details."One of the things we're working on right now, and, again, with a month to go, is how can we compress things so even at the middle school and high school level, there's less movement," de Blasio said. "And it might look different than a normal school year, but it's the – we just need to get one school year in, in this fashion."De Blasio maintained the first day of school would be Sept. 10.This article was written by Jennifer Bisram for WPIX. 1759

Don’t forget the chilies.“Amarillo, onions, garlic, that’s it,” she said.Maral Tseylikman is from Azerbaijan.
