ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Running a 5K can be challenging as it is, but imagine doing it while living with cerebral palsy. That’s what one 11-year-old is trying to accomplish.Fred Ginman may not have the legs of an athlete, but he certainly has the heart."That’s the message I think Fred has to everyone, 'don’t stop even though we are under coronavirus times,'" said mother Isabella Amaral.Fred is on day three of a 10-day 5K. The goal is 10 laps a day, or 500 meters, around the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Tampa Bay courtyard."The physical therapy we do here it's very modern, very sophisticated, and it's giving Fred hope," said Amaral.Fred and his mom are from Brazil. They have spent more than 600 nights at the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Tampa Bay since 2012, as Fred receives treatment for cerebral palsy. The goal is to one day walk on his own."That's our dream, that's our goal, that's what we envision every night, we envision walking freely on the beach," said Amaral.The family said Ronald McDonald House has been there for them every step of the way and now they want to return the favor. All money raised in support of Fred's Fun Run will go back to helping families like their own."Because since the beginning the Ronald McDonald House has embraced our mission to get Fred walking freely," said Amaral.Ronald McDonald House acknowledges its been a tough year. Their costs have increased while their funding has decreased during the pandemic. They appreciate Fred and Isabella’s desire to give back."And that’s just been really special and heartwarming for us," said Joe Citro, of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Tampa Bay. "They’ve embraced and have been a veteran of the house, the families look to them for advice and look to them for inspiration because they’ve been here for so long."For the next week, people can sign up to sponsor Fred and donate money in his name and mission. SORRENTO VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) - A Marine veteran suffered major injuries after a wrong-way driver crashed into him on I-5 early Saturday morning.Friends have identified the victim as Luis Maldonado. He was transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. His service dog Jax, who was also in the car, was taken to an animal hospital and is expected to survive.The wrong-way driver died at the scene. California Highway Patrol suspects he was under the influence of alcohol. He has not been identified.Maldonado's friends have set up a GoFundMe account to help pay for the mounting medical costs.  622

Ron Helus had been set to retire in the next year from the Ventura County, California Sheriff's Office when, responding late Wednesday to a call of a shooting, he entered the Borderline Bar & Grill.It would be the last act of a 29-year law enforcement veteran described as hardworking and dedicated and, now, as a hero.Helus was among the first officers through the door at the Borderline. He died trying to stop the rampaging gunman, who killed 11 others in the attack in Thousand Oaks, California."He went into save lives, to save other people." Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said of Helus, his voice breaking."He was totally committed, he gave his all, and tonight, as I told his wife, he died a hero," he said.Helus succumbed to his wounds at a hospital, police said. Skateboarder and founder of clothing brand Huf Worldwide, Keith Hufnagel has died. He was 46 years old.His company, Huf Worldwide, released a statement on social media Thursday confirming his passing.“Keith battled brain cancer for the past 2.5 years. And though he beat the odds and fought back much longer than his diagnosis permitted, he ultimately and unfortunately lost the fight,” the statement reads.Hufnagel founded Huf in 2002 in San Francisco, after moving out west from New York. Some San Diego voters are making a surprising - and alarming - discovery in their mailboxes.They are receiving duplicate mail-in ballots for the November midterm. "Obviously with such a contested election and everything in the news right now, was this actually something bigger?" said April Segal, a Hillcrest resident who received two ballots.Nearly 70 percent of voters in the county say they will vote via the postal service this November. People from Hillcrest to Tierrasanta to Escondido have reported receiving the extra ballots. San Diego Registrar of Voters Michael Vu said there are protections in place to make sure everyone gets one only one vote. He said duplicates are not uncommon and this year is a bit worse than others because of issues with the new voter registration system at the DMV. "Our office and the statewide system runs duplicate checks to determine matches or potential matches," Vu said. "When a duplicate record is identified, the record is merged, with the most recent registration becoming the official record."Vu said no matter which ballot a person submits, it will ultimately be counted. He said anyone who knowingly submits two ballots would be referred to the district attorney for an investigation of voter fraud. Segal said she recently got married, changed her name and registered to vote. A few months later, when applying for a Real-ID at the DMV, she checked the 'yes' box when it asked if she would like to register to vote. That likely led to the duplicate ballot. "I knew I already was registered, but I thought I should just err on yes so that nothing got messed up by saying no," she said. Segal said she would continue to vote by mail, despite the mix-up.  1758
