TAMPA, Florida — Police said they got a big win Friday night after they were able to arrest a man wanted in connection to installing credit card skimming devices across the Tampa Bay area.Police on scene told ABC Action News they were able to take the skimmer into evidence after a customer at the Chase Bank at 2001 N. Dale Mabry pulled it off the drive-up ATM while getting cash out. That customer flagged an officer down and showed him the skimmer. What that customer didn’t know is that undercover officers were already in pursuit of the man. Officers on scene say he was wanted by multiple agencies. The man, who has been identified as Yanier Manso Caballero from Hialeah, ditched his black Mercedes in the McDonald’s parking lot next to the bank, kicked off his flip flops, and took off running as officers tried to make an arrest. The police helicopter was able to lead K-9 officers to a heat signature of a man inside a shed on West Cherry Street, about a quarter mile away from the bank. The man was taken into custody a short time later. The customer that found the skimmer told officers on scene that he saw at least two other customers get cash out before he found the skimming device. There is no information, at this point, about how long the device might have been on the ATM. 1305

Taylor Swift is spreading the wealth this holiday season and helping some of those struggling to make ends meet during the coronavirus crisis. The pop star donated ,000 to two mothers who’ve fell behind on rent and other bills amid the COVID-19 pandemic, according to multiple reports.NBC News and Billboard report that Swift decided to donate to the struggling mothers’ GoFundMe pages after reading about their situations in an article by The Washington Post. One of the mothers, Nikki Cornwell, told The Post that she was ,000 behind on rent and she feared that she’d be evicted right after Christmas. The Nashville-based mom says she lost her factory job in March and came down with COVID-19 in May. She had been receiving 5 a week of unemployment, but that just ended.According to Cornwell’s fundraising page, Swift donated to her on Wednesday and wrote that she’s brave for sharing her story.“I'm so sorry for everything you've had to go through this year and wanted to send you this gift, from one Nashville girl to another. Love, Taylor,” wrote Swift with her donation. The second mother, Shelbie Selewski, lives in Macomb County, Michigan. She told The Post that she was ,100 behind on rent and utilities after losing her job as a medical receptionist. In order to make ends meet, the mom says she had to sell some of their belongings.Along with their financial troubles, Selewski told The Post that her new baby was born with a collapse lung, which puts the child at high risk for COVID-19.Like with Cornwell, Swift donated to Selewski through a crowdsourcing page.“No one should have to feel the kind of stress that's been put on you. I hope you and your beautiful family have a great holiday season. Love, Taylor,” wrote Swift. 1753

Students around the country have started to sign petitions, demanding colleges reduce tuition costs amid the pandemic. A recent survey by OneClass.com shows 93 percent of college students feel tuition should be reduced this semester since most classes will be held online.“I feel terrible, you know, by this one semester that I have to pay the exact same amount as I would by getting a whole college experience,” said Gabrielle Perez.Perez is a junior at Michigan State University and is one of many college students demanding lower tuition with online classes. She started a petition at her school, claiming “online classes hold a far less value compared to those that were once in a classroom”“You are at a Big Ten school. I am paying for a Big Ten school. I’m not getting the Big Ten-school experience,” said Perez.Currently, MSU has only committed to a tuition freeze, which essentially keeps tuition the same as the previous two years. However, around the country, other higher education institutions have begun reducing their tuition.Georgetown University, Princeton University, Lafayette College, Rowan University, Spelman College, Clark Atlanta University, and American University are just some of the higher education institutions that have lowered tuition by 10 percent. Schools like Hampton University and Williams College have lowered their tuition by 15 percent, while Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) announced it will be offering incoming freshman full-tuition scholarships for the first year. All other SNHU students will have their tuition rate slashed from ,000 to ,000.Most schools have held strong in maintaining current tuition rates, with a few even raising tuition.“You can’t talk about prices and what institutions are charging students without talking about cost,” said Denisa Gandara, an assistant professor of educational policy and leadership at Southern Methodist University. “In many cases, the costs are going up.”Gandara explained many higher education institutions are reluctant to reduce tuition because of additional costs this year. Those additional costs include the cost of remote-learning equipment, training instructors to teach remotely effectively, and higher health insurance premiums.“I imagine institutions are still looking at their numbers and trying to decide whether they do need to lower their prices to attract more students,” she said. Some fear a significant number of college students will drop out or take the semester off, and some students have threatened that in their petitions.“You have so much time to go back to college anyways, that this one semester or maybe a whole year is not going to define you,” said Perez.Financial experts like Calvin Williams, Jr., CEO at Freeman Capital, believe a semester or two away from a four-year higher education institution may not be so bad after all. In fact, from a financial perspective both short and long-term, he is encouraging students to do this.During this pandemic, his company has been providing college students with advice on how to save on college tuition. One major way to save, according to William, Jr., is to consider taking transferable classes at a community college where tuition is already drastically lower than that at a four-year college or university.“Going down the community college-first route, for at least a COVID time like this, it will allow you to save money on tuition on room and board, and you will have a lot of flexibility in a year or two when you transfer to a four-year, carry those credits but carry less debt,” said William, Jr. 3592

Sumner Redstone, who built a media empire from his family’s drive-in movie chain, has died. He was 97. Redstone built his operations through aggressive acquisitions, but many headlines with his name focused on his severing ties with wives, actors and executives. In multiple interviews, he said he’d never die.His tight-fisted grip on the National Amusements theater chain, which controls both CBS Corp. and Viacom Inc. through voting stock, has been passed down to his daughter Shari Redstone, who battled top executives to re-merge the two entities that split in 2006. 578

TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. -- A Walmart employee called Tarpon Springs, Florida police on Thursday to report a strong odor coming from a van parked in the store's parking lot. The employee told police the older model van had insect activity on the interior of the van's windows and there was a strong smell coming from the van. Police responded to the location and found an older model Ford E-150 van parked at the north end of the parking lot near Tarpon Avenue. When officers entered the vehicle, they discovered a dead person. Detectives have responded to the scene and are conducting a full investigation into the death. The identity of the deceased is unknown at this time.  701
