SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Lifeguards say beach attendance was much larger compared to a typical weekend, but drastically smaller than the usual Independence Day crowds. Still, lifeguards conducted hundreds of rescues along San Diego's coastline.America's big beach birthday bash was not as jam-packed this year."We didn't know what to expect," San Diego Fire-Rescue Lifeguard Lt. Andy Lerum said. "We thought maybe with LA beaches and Orange county beaches closed, we'd see an influx, but we didn't really."Lt. Lerum says only about 200,000 to 300,000 people came to San Diego beaches this July 4th weekend, compared to over 1,000,000 visitors in years past."Obviously, with the fireworks being canceled, people didn't camp out all day waiting for them," Lt. Lerum said. "So parking lots were full; however, the beaches and parks were not at full capacity."This meant leftover trash was not nearly as bad either. Volunteers of the local Surfrider Foundation spent a fraction of their usual time picking up Sunday morning. Those who did come to the beaches could not wait to dip their feet in the sand."For three months, we are in quarantine, and so it was so hard for me!" Fay Beygi said.Only a few people were seen wearing masks, as many visitors stuck together with their families, or were in the water. While some were hoping for more enforcement, lifeguards shifted their focus on the dangerous high surf. On July 4, 2020, they conducted about 300 rescues — 197 of them were at the La Jolla Windandsea. That number includes responding to swimmers in distress, stingray patients, and boating emergencies. While that is a lot for a typical day, lifeguards say that it is less than half of the usual July 4 numbers. Still, they say Windandsea is a popular place where even experienced surfers and swimmers can get washed away."Avoid rip currents when you can," Lt. Lerum said. "If you get stuck in a rip current, try not to panic. Swim parallel to the shore and go back to shore. And please, supervise your young children. Watch them very carefully."A high surf advisory is in effect this weekend until 12 p.m. on Monday, bringing rip currents and generally hazardous conditions for swimmers. The high surf also could bring some minor flooding to low-lying areas during high tide, including in La Jolla, Del Mar, and Cardiff, according to the National Weather Service. 2377

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Raw emotion filled a San Diego courtroom Tuesday as the friends and family members of those killed and injured in a crash faced the drunk driver responsible at her sentencing. Thirteen people flew in from San Francisco to speak during victim impact statements. The most powerful words came from Giao Pham's life partner, John Lawhead. Pham was killed in the March 23rd crash."We were together for eleven years, until your actions that night took my partner, my world, my everything. You still don't have any remorse in your heart, you're a very shallow, person aren't you!?" At one point, the defendant, Alondra Marquez, interrupted, saying "You don't know me," Lawhead shouted back, " I don't care to know you, the only reason I know you is because you murdered my partner!" Marquez, 22, rear-ended a Lyft car on Highway 163 in Balboa Park, killing Pham and leaving his friend, Andy Lynn with a traumatic brain injury. Prosecutors said Marquez had a blood alcohol level more than three times the legal limit and was driving more than 100 miles an hour. In a bizarre coincidence, Marquez and the two victims were at the same Hillcrest bar the night of the crash. While Pham and Lynn chose to hire a Lyft, Marquez chose to drive, even though several people offered to give her a ride. "You had five chances not to drive your car, you chose to drive, at your fastest speed of 109 miles an hour, but that wasn't fast enough or good enough for you," shouted Lawhead Pham and Lynn were visiting from San Francisco for a wedding. The impact sent the car flying into a ravine. The Lyft driver suffered minor injuries. " The last place that I seen him go in the ground is where I find comfort, this is what I see when I go to see him now, do you understand your actions now?!" Marquez showed no emotion and read from a prepared statement. She said she doesn't remember anything about the night. "Physically, it's my fault, but spiritually and emotionally, I don't know where I was, but I wasn't there," she said from behind the glass. Lawhead told her she is the first person he truly hates. " I never thought I could truly hate someone. I hate your heart. I hate your soul. I hate your being, your spirit, I hate all of you." Marquez said she isn't a bad person. " Just know that I am not a bad or evil girl, my brain is processing this. It's a hard pill to swallow." Marquez asked for forgiveness. "I'm real sorry. I can't do nothing about it, but I'm locked up if that makes you guys feel better."She pleaded guilty and faces a maximum sentence of 13 years, four months in prison when the judge announces her sentence next week. 2794

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diegans should get their flu shots before the flu season typically starts, county health officials said Wednesday. Most flu cases are reported between the end of October and April or May, according to the County Health and Human Services Agency. It takes about two weeks after receiving the flu shot to develop immunity to the virus, said officials.“People should get vaccinated before the worst of the flu season gets here,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “The vaccine is safe and effective and is available across the region.”342 people in San Diego County died of the virus during the last flu season, officials said. Most of the deaths were among those over 65, with underlying medical conditions. The high total was due to the severe flu season, along with extensive monitoring.RELATED: Where you can get a free flu shot in San Diego CountyNo one has died so far this flu season, compared to one death at this point last year.Total cases are down for 2018 with 83 flu illnesses compared to 259 at this time during the last flu season. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone six months and older get vaccinated.Flu vaccines are available at doctors’ offices and retail pharmacies. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diegans have every opportunity to get moving as the new year gets underway.America's Finest City was recently ranked by financial website WalletHub as the ninth most active city in the U.S. The study examined 100 cities around the country, comparing them on metrics including the presence of fitness centers and sports facilities, costs of fitness memberships, trail availability, and share of inactive adults. The metrics were then organized under either "budget and participation" and "sports and outdoors."San Diego ranked first in fitness centers and sports centers per capita, seventh in baseball and softball diamonds per capita, 22nd in basketball hoops per capita, 16th in parkland acres per capita, and 30th in walking. Those rankings brought the city's budget and participation rank to 27 and sports and outdoors rank to eight.RELATED: 7 unique workouts in San Diego to start the year strongChula Vista was also ranked on the study, though at a distant 79, ranking 25th in budget and participation and 87 in sports and outdoors. So where is the most active city located, according to WalletHub? You'll have to fly over to Honolulu, Hawaii, where the city ranked first in sports and outdoors. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County officials urged people across the county to cooperate with the latest public health orders and purple tier restrictions Monday. The county broke its record for the highest single-day COVID-19 cases reported on Sunday at 1,087. The second highest day was reported Monday with 833 new cases.During an emergency briefing, county officials said too many people fail to take the proper measures to slow the spread.“It is really about wearing facial coverings, and the social distancing, and staying home when you are sick,” said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county’s public health officer.“As we go into the Thanksgiving holiday, we know that people want to get together, but I encourage you to follow the guidance that we have posted on our website, that the state, as well as the CDC, are recommending. Really limit your engagements or gatherings over the holidays. Follow the guidance from the state, no more than three households. I would strongly encourage you not to travel out of state.”County Supervisor Greg Cox said cease and desist letters were sent to several businesses and entities that refused to follow the purple tier closure orders over the weekend.Wooten recently asked law enforcement agencies to step up enforcement efforts in their jurisdictions; Supervisor Cox sent similar letters Friday.“On Friday, I sent a letter to all the mayors in our region to have them step up enforcement of state and local public health orders. And our regional compliance team is moving forward on complaints we are receiving, we need your cooperation, and we certainly need your compliance,” said Cox. “If not, we are fully prepared to enforce compliance with our local law enforcement agencies and other jurisdictions.”“You can be open, and you can be safe. It’s not either-or,” said Dr. Jeremy McGarity, lead pastor at Skyline Church.Skyline church did not receive a cease and desist letter Monday, but they’ve been warned before.McGarity said he believes religious services are essential, and he couldn’t stand by and watch people struggle with their mental health any longer.“We saw the huge rate of suicide ideation that went through the roof,” he said. “We actually felt like for us, it would be spiritual malpractice to stay closed.”McGarity said the church offers outdoor and online services but has no plans to shut down indoor operations.Instead, he says they have added several health and safety measures and leave it up to the congregants to decide.“For some people, being inside the church is their relationship to God,” he said.If cease and desist letters are ignored, that could result in criminal misdemeanor citations with a ,000 fine for each violation. Cox warned Monday that full closure orders could be enforced if businesses do not cooperate.Several lawsuits challenging the state and the county have already been filed. It’s something McGarity does not want to do but says the shutdown orders shouldn’t be looked at as “one size fits all”.“I don’t want to fight our county. I love our county,” said McGarity. “We don’t want to fight, we really don’t, but we will because we know our rights, and we know how important it is that we stay open.” 3202
