SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego teen took a jump when she decided to quit social media. At just 16-years-old, many teens today couldn't think of doing so.Alexa Mendes said she knew she had to cut the cord after recognizing that she was addicted to the likes, shares, and interactions online."It is difficult enough to try and manage our overwhelming lives already filled with extracurriculars, sports teams, clubs, honors societies, difficult classes, insane amounts of homework, the pressures of applying to prestigious universities, and an abundance of other expectations," Mendes writes. "On top of that, we are always thinking about our online profiles."So she curbed her online presence back. In doing so, she learned a lot and turned those lessons into a book: #Unsubscribed: How I am thriving in high school without social media (and you can, too)."It wasn't that difficult. It's something I'm passionate about since it's part of my life and my experience and story to tell," Mendes said. Now, Mendes' message isn't that teens should drop social media entirely. Instead, she hopes her story can help others strike a healthy balance."Over time, I realized that the key wasn’t to abolish my usage completely--it was all about becoming balanced and finding a way to use social media in moderation," she writes. "There are suggestions on how to transition from addiction to moderation — all while maintaining a social life."Mendes' book is available on Amazon. 1469

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A shortage of labor is creating big problems for San Diego farmers. According to the San Diego Farm Bureau, the slowing workforce is expected to impact local farmers and the price we pay at the grocery store. The bureau says the problem stems from an aging work force, the lack of an easy-to-navigate visa program, and the cost of living in San Diego County. There is a visa program available, but for San Diego’s smaller farmers, the process is complicated and expensive. Created in 1986, the H-2A visa was designed to help understaffed farmers hire foreign workers. The problem? The visa program requires farmers to pay its H-2A employees a set minimum wage, .92 per-hour in California. Farmers are also required to provide housing, food and transportation to H-2A workers. California isn’t alone, other states like Idaho are also struggling to find help.According to an Idaho newspaper – The Post Register, a recent migrant shortage and costs associated with the program are forcing some farms out of business. Although times are tough for farmers in San Diego, the bureau says there is a solution – creating a boiled down visa program that simplifies things for farmers and the workers they need. Friday morning on 10News at 6, Kalyna Astrinos takes a deeper look at the impact on San Diego farmers and the decisions they face in the midst of the shortage. 1392

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- After a 12-cent sales tax hike went into effect, people were wondering why the price of gas kept increasing. “I probably spend about ,000 a month on gas,” Jim Miller said. "I have a landscape maintenance business so my gas bill a month is, you know, it affects me.”Now experts say San Diego has some of the highest gas prices in the country, even more expensive than Hawaii. RELATED: Check gas prices in your areaMarie Montgomery of the Auto Club of Southern California says it's probably a rare combination of higher than normal demand in October, higher oil prices, and some refinery maintenance that was put off because of Hurricane Harvey. “Came together in a perfect storm," Montgomery said. "Then we had that tax increase on top of it and all the sudden 24 cents later, we’re where we are now. We’re paying higher prices right now than we have been in over two years.”Montgomery says they are hoping prices go down and level out again by the New Year at the very latest.  1032

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A transgender San Diegan is calling for change when it comes to blood donation.Currently, the FDA’s recommendation to blood establishments is that in the context of the donor history questionnaire, male or female gender should be self-identified and self-reported for blood donation.Van Levy of Pacific Beach is non-binary transgender, meaning Van does not identify as male or female. Van goes by gender-neutral pronouns like 'they', 'them', 'their', or just Van.Van tells 10News when they reached out to the San Diego Blood Bank, they were told they would not be able to donate if they could not fully complete the donor history questionnaire, which has two gender-specific questions. Van was told if they cannot fill out 'male' or 'female' on the questionnaire they would not be able to donate blood. “It was really hurtful and painful, it reminded me we haven’t progressed as much as a lot of us like to believe we have, it just hurt," said Van. The two gender-specific questions are, in the past 12 months, have you:Male Donors: Had sexual contact with another male?Female donors: Had sexual contact with a male who had sexual contact with another male in the past 12 months?Helen Bixenman is Vice President of Quality and Regulatory Affairs at the San Diego Blood Bank. She's in charge of making sure blood from the San Diego Blood Bank is safe and pure, free from transfusion-transmitted infections. “It’s important for people to understand we have a wide range of questions, and these questions pertain to the safety of the donor as well as the safety of the blood products. They include medications, how you’re feeling, travel, risk behaviors," said Bixenman. She says they must adhere to the strict regulations and requirements of the FDA and AABB. She says if anyone fails to fill out the entire donor history questionnaire they will be turned away from donating blood.Van wants to see this regulation changed and believes it marginalizes a group of people who only want to help their community. “I definitely understand the rules and regulations that they have to adhere too and I think that there's ways to remove gender from the questions to get to same answers they’re seeking to protect people receiving blood," said Van. Bixenman says the San Diego Blood Bank does not want to turn people away from blood donation. She says this is the first time they've encountered the situation and that she would consider bringing the issue up to advocacy groups and the FDA. 2505
