PINGYAO, Shanxi, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- A photo exhibition exclusively dedicated to Canadian surgeon Henry Norman Bethune opened Saturday at the Pingyao International Photography Festival in north China's Shanxi Province.     Bethune is a household name in China, a country where he saved numerous lives and sacrificed his own in 1939 during China's War of Resistance Against Japanese aggression.     "He is noble-minded and pure, a man of moral integrity and above vulgar interests, a man who is of value to the people," Chairman Mao wrote in his article In Memory of Norman Bethune.     The exhibition consists of 41 photos of Dr. Bethune living and working in China, some of which had never been shown before.     "As Canadians, we are all proud to be associated with this visionary adventurer and deeply touched by the respect and recognition shown to him here in China," said Canadian Ambassador to China, David Mulroney.     Most of the pictures were provided by Wang Yan, daughter of ShaFei, who was a forefather of China's news photography and a close friend of Bethune.     "I remember that I was touched when I first read about Bethune in my school days and now it feels like looking at the pictures of an old friend who has just passed away," said visitor Wu Jun.     "Many people love Bethune for they have learnt his deeds and spirit in Chairman Mao's article while my affection for him comes from his friendship with my father," Wang said. "Bethune was my father's mentor as he exemplified the essence of communism."     Upon his death Bethune left his Kodak Retina camera to Sha Fei.     Bethune also healed Japanese soldiers, took pictures of them, which were sent back to Japan.     "He wished the Japanese people would protest against the war when they saw how their sons were suffering on battlefield. He was a true humanist," Wang said.     Just before he died, Bethune wrote in a letter, saying that the last two years (those he spent in China) have been the most significant, the most meaningful years of his life.

DALIAN, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said on Thursday that the World Economic Forum (WEF) is helpful in gathering confidence for fighting global economic downturn. Wen made the remarks while meeting with WEF chairman Klaus Schwab on the sidelines of the the Annual Meeting of the New Champions 2009, also known as the Summer Davos.     The three-day forum, held in northeastern China's port city Dalian, has attracted some 1,400 participants from 86 countries and regions to discuss topics about the theme of "Relaunching Growth". WASHINGTON, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- Visiting top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo on Thursday met with U.S. President Barack Obama at the White House on bilateral relations and international and regional issues of common concern.     Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, was the first top Chinese legislator that has visited the United States during the past two decades.     Before meeting with Obama, Wu met U.S. Vice President Joe Biden at the White House. Wu will hold talks with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton later in the day. BEIJING, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- The General Office of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and the General Office of the State Council issued a collection of slogans Friday for the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.     The collection of 50 catchphrases touches upon issues of political system, economic development, environmental protection, military modernization and national unification.     On the top of the slogan list are "Warmly celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China!" and "Hail the great success of our country's reform and opening-up and socialist modernization!"     Also on the list are "Put people first, realize, safeguard and develop the fundamental interests of the overwhelming majority of the people!" and "build a socialist harmonious society and promote social equity and justice!"     One of the slogans also advocates the inheritance of fine military tradition that the armed forces should obey the command of the Party and serve the people.     Slogans also include "Adhere to the one China policy and promote the country's great cause of peaceful reunification!" and "Adhere to the independent foreign policy of peace and unswervingly pursue the road of peaceful development!" and "Long live the great unity of all nationalities of China!"     China has planned massive celebrations for the 60th founding anniversary of the people's republic on Oct. 1. The celebrations in downtown Beijing will feature a mass pageant and a military review.

BEIJING, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- A Senior Chinese official on Friday called for fresh efforts to furnish occupational security for police and take good care of their relatives.     Zhou Yongkang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks when meeting with representatives of the relatives of police officers who died on duty.     More than 10,000 police officers died on duty with honor in the past 60years, and more than 150,000 more had been injured when protecting the country's social stability, Zhou said.     He urged Party, government and police departments at all levels to take into account of the occupational hazards of the police and take measures to provide better treatment for them.     The livelihood of the relatives of police officers, especially those who died on duty, must also be secured, Zhou said.     He urged the police to live up to the people's expectations and make new contributions to the Party and the people.
