SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Some COVID-19 survivors are noticing a surprising symptom months after their battle with the virus: hair loss.Nikki Privett said she had a mild case of COVID-19 back in April, but several months later, she says her hair started falling out in chunks.“I noticed that more and more was coming out in my hands and then eventually in July it became handfuls,” she told our sister station WRTV in Indianapolis. Dr. Nancy Maly, a physician in dermatology at Sharp Rees-Stealy, said she has seen more patients with complaints about hair loss recently, both from those who have recovered from COVID and those who have not been infected."I definitely have seen more patients lately coming in for hair loss -- with and without having had COVID," Maly said. "From what we know about COVID, there's not really a compelling reason to believe that it's the virus itself but more likely it's this stress-induced kind of hair loss that we know about and see all the time."Doctors believe it’s most likely a condition called telogen effluvium, a type of hair loss that can affect both women and men, and typically starts about three months after a stressful event. It can be triggered by emotional stress like a job loss or the death of a loved one, or by physical stress like a serious illness.Typically, adults shed about 100 hairs a day. But Dr. Maly said when your body is in shock or fighting a disease, there can be backlog on that hair loss.“During that stressful time, your body is prioritizing the most important functions and shedding your hair is not one of them,” she said. “So you end up having that delayed reaction where the hairs that were supposed to fall out during that time fall out later.”There is not a direct treatment for telogen effluvium but this temporary form of hair loss usually resolves itself after about three to six months, she said. There’s also early research showing a different kind of link between hair loss and the virus. Two small studies showed that bald men may be up to 40 percent more at risk of developing a severe case of COVID-19. Scientists theorize it’s because bald men have higher levels of a hormone called adrogen that seems to help the virus enter cells. 2216

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Some San Diegans are pushing back against the county’s order to wear face coverings in public. The face coverings requirement in San Diego County -- prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic -- has been in effect since early May, but in other California counties, rules are starting to change.Last week, Orange County officials decided to roll back their mandate and only “strongly recommended” that masks be worn in public settings.Riverside and San Bernardino counties have also relaxed their respective mask mandates.“It's a hard thing to draw the lines. There’s human nature, there’s a concern about such a ramp-up of state enforcement of things,” said University of St. Thomas Law School Professor Robert Kahn.Kahn, an expert in mask law and history, said one of the biggest issues is people are not used to taking orders from health officials. That feeling is evident in social media postings on pages like Reopen San Diego on Facebook, where there is a growing push to rescind San Diego’s mask mandate. Many health officials still agree that face coverings can block transmission of the respiratory droplets released by people when breathing or talking.During a Monday press briefing, San Diego County Public Health Officer Wilma Wooten said, “Every jurisdiction is different, but San Diego will continue mandatory face coverings.”Kahn said no matter what rules or laws government might put in place, people will ultimately have to abide by what businesses want their customers to do.“Businesses will make their decision; private business, free enterprise understands this,” he said.Orange County’s public health officer resigned rather than remove the county’s mask order. The OC supervisors then replaced her with someone who would make that change.California officials recommend face coverings, but they leave the final decision up to individual counties. 1882

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Standing outside his Vista headquarters on Wednesday, Republican Darrell Issa told reporters that he's comfortable he'll stay ahead of opponent Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar in the run for a seat in California's 50th congressional district.“Statistically, it’s impossible for him to win with probably 60,000 votes left to come in,” he told reporters.Issa is a veteran politician looking to return to Congress after a two-year hiatus. He represented coastal North County's 49th district until 2018 but decided not to run for re-election as that district turned blue.“I've already spoken with Congressional leadership and I’m planning to go back to what will be a very unusual freshman orientation for someone with 18 years [of experience],” he added.ABC 10News spoke to Campa-Najjar on Tuesday after polls closed when early returns showed that he and Issa were still neck and neck. At the time he said, “Obviously, we know we've had a strong campaign that put people before politics and country before party and it is showing in this ruby red district. We're transcending partisanship.”The 31-year-old has continued trying to flip the historically red district which spans parts of East, North, and Riverside counties. He previously lost to former congressman Duncan Hunter who resigned this year after pleading guilty to a felony campaign fraud charge. On Wednesday, Campa-Najjar’s office declined a request for an interview but sent the following statement:“We’re still looking at the returns with a measure of hope and urge every last vote be counted. The fact that it took the former wealthiest member of congress to try and buy this seat proves how formidable our people-powered campaign is. I’m proud of my team, eternally grateful to our supporters, and would be honored to serve the people of CA-50 in congress. May the will of every voter be heard.” 1881

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego winemakers say business is picking up, and there's a new way to for locals to get their foot in the door. A new report by the San Diego County Vintners Association says there are now 116 wineries in the region, with sales nearly doubling in the last year. The industry now has about 700 workers in the county. Now, the association has teamed up with Cuyamaca College for a Viticulture Technician Apprenticeship program. Participants work 1,500 hours a year, learning the ins and outs of winemaking. They earn an hour the first year and the second, with opportunities to make more doing side jobs once they get enough experience. "You can't really sell wine unless you know where it's coming from and what goes into it, creating the story behind the wine itself," said Kaylan Wedemeyer, who is an apprentice for La Mesa's San Pasqual Winery.Linda McWilliams, who owns San Pasqual, said many local wineries are mom and pops, but that apprentices can also grow with them."I think we'll find places for the people who graduate, and then we'll build together," she said. The program is accepting applications ahead of interviews in December, and January starts.  1227
