OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - The Rugby team at MiraCosta College has qualified for the National Championships in Pittsburgh.The Spartans Rugby program is in its first full competitive season, and due to the lack of Junior College teams in Southern California, they play a schedule that consists of NCAA 4-year schools.The MiraCosta Rugby team is made up of around 40 players, many of whom have backgrounds in football and wrestling.The team doesn't lack for experience, as a few players have been playing for over 10 years, like Ian Crilly, who says he's pleased with the team's progression."I've been playing for about 12 years now, so it was a little rough with these first year players. Trying to get them up to speed but we got there," said Crilly.The Spartans begin play in the National Championships on April 21, and win or lose, they feel all there success this season has put the school on the map for athletics. (KGTV) -- A 63 year old man is grateful to be alive Saturday night after his sailboat capsizes and he was left swimming for his survival.Andrea Aria was on a trip back from Catalina, “I’m alive for the grace of God. Aria sat down with 10 News and talked about the horrific details, “I didn’t even see the wave until I made the turn and it was too late it was up on me”. The wave tipped the boat, he tried holding on, “I let go and went back in the water and I went under the boat and the boat went over me once then twice and the propellers are going”.During that moment he didn’t realize the injuries he was getting, “I didn’t feel, the adrenaline the cold water the salt all I know I couldn’t move my fingers I knew my hands were messed up “. Two casts on his hands because doctors say, he cut tendons leaving his fingers unable to move. The propeller on his boat also gashed his foot leaving him with 28 stitches.He swam about a half mile to shore, “every two strokes I was getting hit with a wave and I’m submerging and I’m having trouble handling it” Aria tells us.He says just as he was about to give up, his foot hit the sand and he crawled his way to the beach, “I finally made it and there were two police men and they said someone called us must have been an angel”.Saturday night, Aria is thankful to be alive, but he’s now realizing just how much he lost, along with his boat, “the things that I need to function everyday, they’re gone, they’re all gone” he continued, “I’m really without anything at this moment”.He’s now left to depend solely on his faith, “it wasn’t my time, I guess when its your time its your time. OLDENBERG, Germany — A German former nurse on Tuesday admitted murdering 100 patients, making him one of the country's deadliest post-war serial killers.Niels Hoegel, 41, confessed to killing his patients -—between the ages of 34 and 96 — at two hospitals in northern Germany between 2000 and 2005.Hoegel is accused of giving his victims various non-prescribed drugs, in an attempt to show off his resuscitation skills to colleagues and fight off boredom.On the first day of his trial at a court in Oldenburg, northwest Germany, Hoegel said the murder allegations against him were correct.Around 126 relatives of the victims are co-plaintiffs in the trial, which is expected to run until May next year, a court spokeswoman told CNN. 740

OAXACA, Mexico (KGTV) - A 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck Mexico's southern Pacific coastline Friday, according to USGS.The earthquake struck in the state of Oaxaca shortly after 3:30 p.m., northeast of the city of Pinotepa de Don Luis. It was originally reported as a preliminary 7.5-magnitude quake, before being downgraded.A tsunami warning was not been issued for the area, according to NOAA.Initially Mexico's National Seismological Service reported more than 50 aftershocks in the hour following the earthquake. By 10:33 p.m. the seismological service tweeted that more than 200 aftershocks had occurred. RELATED: Earthquake shakes Baja California, Central MexicoAt least two people were killed when a helicopter carrying Mexico’s interior minister and Oaxaca Gov. Alejandro Murat crashed while serveying damage from the earthquake, according to Reuters. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) – A two-vehicle collision on an Oceanside street sent 10 people to the hospital late Sunday night.Oceanside police said the crash occurred at around 11:45 p.m. on state Route 76 at Douglas Drive.According to police, a silver sedan ran a red light and collided with a pickup truck with a family inside. The impact caused the truck to flip onto its side.A man, a pregnant woman and two children were trapped in the truck, while six people in the sedan were also trapped.It took emergency crews about 30 minutes to free the trapped people from both vehicles.The 10 people were taken to local hospitals with unspecified injuries. Fire personnel said at least six of the victims had “critical” injuries.The crash is under investigation, and police are trying to determine if the driver of the silver sedan was under the influence at the time of the collision. 887
