The comedy is a "The Prince and the Pauper" knockoff that isn't worthy of a single Barrymore performance, let alone two.While Barrymore shows off some range in exploring the two characters, the script doesn't provide enough material for either of them to stand out.She plays both fallen comedy star Candy Black and her meek stand-in, Paula. Once a judge sentences Candy to rehab, she and Paula work out a switcheroo deal that spares Candy the inconvenience of alcoholism recovery while giving Paula a break from her dreary life.You can usually tell whether or not a comedy has a shot at working in the first 15 minutes, when there are no concerns for setting up the story and the characters are free to romp without a care of advancing the tale. "The Stand-In" gets stuck in the mud early on, focusing on its bizarre setup. Candy comes off as an intolerable diva, while Paula is a helpless pushover. Neither is all that appealing.At least it's got Barrymore going for it. Bursting with personality while showing off the vulnerability that she's had full command of ever since she was a tyke in "E.T." she retains the star charisma that shot her up the ranks of the Hollywood elite. Since roles in the vein of "The Wedding Singer" and "Never Been Kissed" are no longer coming along, it's refreshing to see her reinvent herself as a Melissa McCarthy-style comedic force of nature.Director Jamie Babbit manages to squeeze a few laughs out of her capable ensemble cast, which includes Ellie Kemper and T.J. Miller, but the lazy story takes way too long to push forward, and any potential emotional impact falls by the wayside as the dull plot plods its way to its conclusion.The central message in most movies like this is that the grass isn't greener on the other side. PARSONS, Tennessee — A 12-year-old boy led a Decatur County, Tennessee deputy on a chase Thursday morning during a “joyride” in his father’s truck before later crashing into a building. The call came in around 5:45 a.m. local time when the owner of the vehicle reported it as his son and truck. Sheriff Keith Byrd said the boy went on a "joyride" in his father's truck.A deputy later spotted the truck and tried to stop it but the boy allegedly fled. From there, he crashed into a business near two highways.The was significant damage to the building. The boy suffered some bruises. It’s unclear whether he'll face charges. 651

POINT ROBERTS, Wash. -- In Point Roberts, Washington, the beauty of nature isn’t hard to find.“The environment is unsurpassed,” said Brian Calder, director of the Point Roberts Chamber of Commerce. “I mean, it's a beautiful spot.”It’s a town of about 1,000 people, where two nations meet: the U.S. and Canada.Lately, though, people there feel more like they’re caught in the middle.“We're surrounded by foreign territory, not part of North America, USA,” Calder said.Point Roberts is what’s known as an “exclave.” When a 19th century treaty established the 49th parallel as part of the U.S. border with Canada, Point Roberts ended up on the American side, but cut off from the rest of the U.S. because it sits at the end of a peninsula, with Canada to the north of it.Normally, travelling back and forth across the border isn’t an issue.However, because of the coronavirus, the border is closed and the town – which relies on tourism – is at a standstill.“Our traffic comes from Canada, lower mainland primarily, and that's what drives our economy. Period,” Calder said. “We have nothing internally.”Whitney McElroy owns Breakwaters Bar & Grill, where hundreds of people usually gather for music and food. That didn’t happen this year, though. The current situation forced him to furlough all but two employees.“We're down between 85 and 90%,” McElroy said of the grill. “By opening the border, it would considerably help this community. It would bring it back to life again, as it's pretty much dead now.”One of the few things keeping the town alive is the lone supermarket.“On a normal summer week, we do we see about 8,000 customers,” said Ali Hayton, who owns the Point Roberts Marketplace.This year, business at the supermarket is down 80%. Since the lone school in town only goes up to 3rd grade, her children, like some others there, attend nearby schools in Canada. School, though, is considered a non-essential border crossing. So, in order to continue going to her current high school in Canada, her oldest daughter moved in with friends of the family.“By doing that to a family, we're really, we're just killing these kids,” Andreoli said. “So, we need to smarten up as a country, both countries, and look past the politics and look past all that.”Residents believe there could be a simple solution.“If we can have an exemption federally from both sides of the fence, then I think it would definitely ease things and make things a lot more palatable for people,” said Nic Lehoux, who lives in Point Roberts.Recently, a twice weekly passenger ferry service and small plane service began for residents in Point Roberts. Before then, they had no other way to reach the U.S., without driving through the Canadian border and over into Washington state.Still, the border remains closed for the foreseeable future, as the closure has been renewed every 30 days for the past six months. 3724

Parents of a Wisconsin teen demand change after their son took his own life. Quinten Espinoza and his family just moved to Glendale, Wisconsin from Ohio four months ago. He was an 8th grader at Glen Hills Middle School. The parents said they knew he was dealing with some bullying but never thought it would go as far as it did."He always said, I told the teachers, it's not a big deal. I'll go up. No, I'm okay, I got it taken care of,” said Espinoza’s mother Lara Furko. “Never showed any other signs of anything. So I never thought to pursue it any further. And now I'm at where I'm at today.”Furko saved some of the messages he received. About three weeks ago a female classmate wrote, “I hate you so much, I hope you die.” Espinoza responded, “I’m a human being just like you and if I do you will feel guilty. #StopBullying.”On Wednesday the principal of Glen Hills invited parents to a meeting to share concerns about Espinoza’s death. Espinoza’s family is questioning the school's response to his death. School leaders said it’s an ongoing investigation by police and the school district, and that there were no reports of bullying.  1183
