One of the suspects was armed with a handgun. The victims complied with the demands and were not injured, according to police, who said the suspects fled in a white, four-door car heading north on Campanile Drive toward Montezuma Road. Both suspects were described as roughly 170-pound black men, one about 5- foot-7 and the other about 5-foot-10. They both wore dark hooded sweatshirts, saggy pants and sneakers. The San Diego Police Department is investigating the robbery, but university police released information as part of a community safety notification.Anyone with information about the crime was asked to call the SDPD at (619) 531-2000. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Seven influenza-related deaths were confirmed last week in San Diego County, bringing the number of fatalities so far this flu season to 57, compared to 30 at this time last year, the Health and Human Services Agency reported Wednesday. The ages of the patients ranged from 60 to 89, and all had underlying medical conditions, according to the HHSA.The total number of cases dropped for the third week in a row. The county logged 1,548 cases last week, compared to 1,689 the week before."While influenza cases have continued to decline, flu activity is still widespread in the region," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "People should continue getting vaccinated and taking other preventive measures to avoid getting sick."The seasonal total of influenza cases is now 15,097. Last flu season saw 4,414 by this time and 9,655 in total.County health officials are encouraging people who are sick to first contact their health care provider by telephone or arrange an urgent appointment, but to go to an emergency department if they have any of the following symptoms:-- difficulty breathing or shortness of breath;-- chest pain or abdominal pain;-- sudden dizziness;-- confusion;-- severe or persistent vomiting; or-- flu-like symptoms that appear to get better, but then return with a fever and worse cough.County health officials and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention strongly advise the annual flu vaccination for everyone 6 months and older, especially in demographics with a heightened risk of serious complications, such as pregnant women, people with chronic medical conditions like asthma, diabetes and lung disease, and people age 65 or older.Residents can take precautions against contracting the virus by frequent hand washing, cleaning commonly touched surfaces, avoiding contact with sick people, and avoiding touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. The flu vaccine is available at local doctors' offices, retail pharmacies and the county's public health centers. A full list of locations offering flu shots can be found at the county's immunization website, sdiz.org, or by calling 211 for the county's health hotline. 2194

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego City Council members Monica Montgomery and Georgette Gomez called on state officials Monday to open an independent investigation into the in-custody death of 24-year-old Aleah Jenkins. Montgomery and Gomez requested the inquiry in a joint statement in response to a news conference last Friday from District Attorney Summer Stephan in which she released body-camera video of Jenkins' time in police custody and said that Jenkins' death was caused by a lack of judgment rather than criminal negligence. The two officials called on the state's Department of Justice and Attorney General Xavier Becerra to open an investigation into the circumstances of Jenkins' death. Montgomery and Gomez also urged the San Diego Police Department to reform its policies regarding the treatment of people in custody. RELATED: Video, detailed report released in woman's San Diego Police custody death``It was very heart-wrenching to hear Ms. Jenkins asking for help and water for over an hour after vomiting and no assistance was rendered,'' Montgomery said. ``The treatment displayed in the video further supports the need to reform our policing policies.'' Jenkins died Dec. 6 nine days after being arrested during a traffic stop on an outstanding warrant for methamphetamine possession. Jenkins passed out while waiting at the SDPD's downtown headquarters and paramedics subsequently rushed her to the hospital. Stephan announced Friday that medical examiners found upward of 17 times the lethal dose of methamphetamine in Jenkins' blood system. Her official cause of death, according to the District Attorney's Office, was hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, a lack of blood and oxygen flow to the brain. RELATED: Cause of death released for woman who passed out in San Diego Police custody``I am deeply troubled about the treatment of Ms. Jenkins while in custody,'' Gomez said. ``The video clearly indicates a decline in her wellbeing. We must all strive to do better to respect the basic human rights of everyone in custody.'' 2048

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The onetime head of a South Bay parent-teacher association was sentenced today to three years probation for embezzling around ,000 from the organization.Kaitlyn Faith Birchman, the former president of the Imperial Beach Charter School PTA, pleaded guilty in February to a felony forgery count. Had she gone to trial and been convicted of forgery and grand theft, she would have faced a potential three-year, eight-month prison sentence, according to the prosecution.Per the terms of her probation, Birchman will have to complete 15 public work service days and make ,000 in restitution to the PTA. If she pays the ,000, her forgery conviction will be reduced to a misdemeanor, according to prosecutors.Birchman, 30, was taken into custody in early January at her Temecula home on an arrest warrant issued in November. She cooperated with investigators, according to Sgt. Karl Miller, who said the thefts occurred over a roughly year-long period. At the time, Birchman's children were attending the charter school, he said. 1057
