A metro Detroit restaurant is defending a viral video showing a brawl inside the Asian Corned Beef on Gratiot.An employee told Scripps station WXYZ in Detroit she was scared when things quickly got out of hand but says her boss and general manager did what they had to do.It’s a video that’s been viewed more than a million times. It was taken on a cell phone inside the Asian Corned Beef on Gratiot Saturday night.WXYZ reached out to the customer who shot the video. A recent study appears to show a person’s blood type might indicate whether they will develop severe respiratory failure if they contract COVID-19.The study sequenced genomes of 1,600 COVID-19 patients in Spain and Italy who had been hospitalized with severe respiratory failure and compared the results to DNA sequences of 2,205 healthy subjects.Results appear to show that people with type A blood had a higher chance of developing severe respiratory failure as compared to people with O blood type. The study claims there may be a “protective effect” for blood group O. However this study has not been peer-reviewed yet and the exact kind or extent of “protective effect” is not known.In early June, the site 23andme.com released results from information gathered from 750,000 participants who identified they had COVID-19. The genealogy company said their research suggests a similar effect in people with O blood type. “Individuals with O blood type are between 9-18% percent less likely than individuals with other blood types to have tested positive for COVID-19, according to the data,” a company statement said.They said while there was a significant difference in those with O blood type, there “appeared to be little differences in susceptibility among the other blood types.”However, some are questioning this idea that people with type O blood are protected. Laura Cooling is the director of immunohematology at the University of Michigan. She noted that the idea that having type O blood is protective doesn’t match with current COVID-19 infection rates.Type O blood is usually more prevalent among African Americans, according to the American Red Cross, yet new information from the CDC and states indicate African Americans have experienced disproportionately high COVID-19 infection rates. A member of the Proud Boys, a far-right group, is under arrest and facing nearly a dozen charges in Portland. The charges allege Alan Swinney pointed a revolver at counterprotesters and fired a paintball gun and mace at them on two separate occasions in August.Swinney, who is scheduled for a court appearance Thursday, was charged in a secret indictment Sept. 11 but not arrested until Wednesday.“In summary, the indictment alleges that Swinney used a paintball gun on August 15, 2020 to cause physical injury to another person,” the statement from the Multnomah County District Attorney’s office said.“Further, the indictment alleges that Swinney used a paintball gun on August 22, 2020 to once again cause physical injury to another person; that he also carried and then pointed a revolver at someone which placed that person in fear of imminent serious physical injury and that he unlawfully discharged mace or a similar substance toward another person.”Swinney remained in custody Wednesday and it wasn’t immediately clear if he had retained an attorney or would be assigned a public defender. 1106

A month after the deadliest mass shooting in America brought bump stocks to national attention, the rifle modification is again for sale and there's no regulation on the horizon.Slide Fire, the company that owns the patent on the rifle modification, said it has resumed taking new orders for bump stocks for the first time after temporarily suspending new sales a month ago."We will resume limited sales on November 1st at 8:30 a.m. CST," said Slide Fire, in an email from its customer services department to prospective buyers. "However, we have not yet reached adequate inventory levels to offer sales of all products."For most of October, the company kept a message posted to its homepage saying that sales of bump stocks were suspended.That suspension happened shortly after gunman Stephen Paddock used rifles fitted with bump stocks to commit the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history on October 1 in Las Vegas. A powerful derecho ripped through the Midwest on Monday, with wins in one locale reaching 112 MPH.Lynn, Iowa, had a reported wind gust of 112 MPH Monday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. The storm continued from Iowa into Illinois, blasting Chicago during the evening rush hour. Top winds in Chicago reached 85 MPH, according to the National Weather Service.Nearly 600,000 electric customers in northern Illinois were without power.Helicopter footage captured by WGN-TV in Chicago showed extensive damage from the storms, with roofs blown off, and even a church steeple knocked down.The storm system continued into Indiana before weakening in Ohio. As of late Monday evening, there were more than 750 reports of severe weather throughout the US, most stemming from Monday's massive storm.
