SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Pacific Beach mother Sandy Algra says her number one job is keeping her child safe, something she wasn’t able to do a few months ago.Algra and her 3-year-old son were at Liberty Station Park when he was scratched by a dirty needle, sending him to the emergency room. Algra says he underwent an infectious disease consultation and will require HIV and Hepatitis C tests every six months.“Right now I’m trying to channel and redirect the anger that I feel about what happened to him, that I wasn’t able to keep him safe," said Algra.She's created a petition to designate San Diego’s playgrounds for children only; adults are only allowed if they’re accompanied by a child.Similar ordinances already exist in New York and Florida, people who violate them can face fines. "I think that most people can use common sense and understand that an adult is not meant to be living under a slide, or sitting on a swing doing drugs or otherwise, that's not what these playgrounds are designed for," said Algra. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Navy veteran Erick Dorsey is the proud new owner of a 2015 Toyota Tacoma, a vehicle once totaled and headed for the salvage yard.The donation is part of the National Auto Body Council's Recycled Rides program - insurers, collision repairers, paint suppliers, parts vendors, and others collaborate to repair and donate vehicles to deserving individuals throughout the country.After leaving the service in 2010, transitioning and finding employment as a civilian was challenging for Dorsey. He relied on his previous skill-set as a welder to make ends meet, a career that nearly cost him his eyesight from being in the trade for over 20 years.Dorsey's currently a full-time student at Cuyamaca College, pursuing environmental science. He's also working as a Veteran Resource Center representative through the VA Work Study program. While he transitions to a new career with limited income, Dorsey relies on public transportation and friends to juggle work and school schedules. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One day after San Diego County allowed dining in restaurants to resume with modifications, Pacific Beach's El Prez was ordered to close for violating county public health orders.Now, the restaurant and bar says it's hoping to reopen sometime next week after passing an health department inspection.Last week, El Prez was the scene of customers ignoring physical distancing and facial covering rules. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Passengers from the Grand Princess cruise ship will be quarantined at MCAS Miramar amid coronavirus fears, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced Sunday.According to the Department, the ship will dock temporarily in a non-passenger port in the San Francisco Bay. Passengers will then be transferred to several federal military facilities throughout the country for medical screening, COVID-19 testing, and a 14-day quarantine. The earliest they could arrive is Tuesday, according to a DoD spokesperson.The nearly 1,000 passengers who are California residents will complete the quarantine at MCAS Miramar and Travis Air Force Base. It's unclear how many of the 1,000 passengers will be housed at Miramar. "MCAS Miramar is preparing to support HHS and their federally mandated quarantine for Grand Princess travelers," a spokesperson for the base said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Police said Tuesday they have arrested a student for threatening to "shoot up" Westview High School.The threat was reported by school staff Tuesday, wherein a student reportedly told other students not to come to school Wednesday "because the student was going to shoot up the school," according to a press release from school officials.Officials said several students reported the threats to Westview High officials.
