As students return to school this week in Florida, they will see something new: "In God We Trust."Gov. Rick Scott signed a bill in March that requires all schools to display signs with the state motto in "a conspicuous place."The measure is part of the nation's first ever private school voucher program for bullied students under a sweeping education bill signed into law Sunday by Gov. Rick Scott.The state statute (1003.44) specifically says, "Each district school board shall adopt rules to require, in all of the schools of the district and in each building used by the district school board, the display of the state motto, “In God We Trust,” designated under s. 15.0301, in a conspicuous place.The measure was sponsored by Rep. Kimberly Daniels, D-Jacksonville, who runs a Christian ministry, according to the Orlando Sentinel.“This motto is inscribed on the halls of this great capitol and inked on our currency, and it should be displayed so that our children will be exposed and educated on this great motto, which is a part of this country’s foundation,” she said when a House committee took up her bill (HB 839). “Something so great should not be hidden.”“In God We Trust” has been part of Florida’s state seal since 1868 and on the state flag since 1900, but has been the state motto only since 2006, according to the Florida Department of State.Locally, St. Lucie Public Schools has provided all schools with a front office poster "to meet the expectations of this statute," according to Kerry Padrick, the district's chief communications officer. 1569

ATLANTA, Ga. – UPS expects to hire more than 100,000 seasonal employees to support the anticipated increase in packages during the holiday season.The company announced Wednesday that its filling full-time and part-time seasonal positions, primarily package handlers, drivers, driver-helpers, and personal vehicle drivers.“We’re preparing for a record peak holiday season. As the economy slowly reopens, Americans are still filing for unemployment at record rates. For some, staying off the job makes more sense than returning to work.“I’m one of those teachers at high risk,” said Patty Candelaria, a teacher in Austin, Texas. “I’ve had open heart surgery three times. I’m concerned because we can’t predict the future.”She just completed her 20th year of teaching.“I’ve never felt so afraid to be face to face with students and worrying about what germs we’re all carrying,” she said.Candelaria has been teaching summer school from her virtual home classroom. She’s concerned to go back to school in the fall if she’s forced to be there in person.“Those classrooms are germ factories on the best day,” said Lily Eskelsen Garcia, President of the National Education Association. “No one wants those public schools open more than the people who love those kids and work in those schools. But we want them open safely.”“I feel like it’s our district’s responsibility to protect,” Candelaria said.She’s not alone. From rideshare drivers to teachers and flight attendants, workers are having to consider many factors before returning to work.“I think it’s quite scary to go back to work if your employer hasn't put the appropriate safeguards in place,” said Peter Ganong, an Assistant Professor of Public Policy at the University of Chicago.Ganong has been studying the impact of unemployment insurance.“We found that it did quite well in the sense that it has replaced all of the lost income for people who have lost their jobs, and then some above and beyond that as well,” he said.Payouts are usually low to encourage people to apply for jobs, but the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security, or CARES, Act changed that.“What the federal government did is it said, ‘We’re going to add an extra 0 per week to everyone's UI benefits, and that was designed and intended to raise up everyone’s benefits precisely because there are no jobs available in many places,” Ganong explained.That’s exactly what happened to flight attendant Brittany Horn.“I am on unemployment,” Horn said. “A lot of our regular routes were cut and so there were just too many flight attendants and not enough flying.”“Most of the junior flight attendants probably are making more on unemployment,” she explained. “But it also depends on how many hours you work.”Across multiple industries, this has been a discussion. Unemployed workers are making more on unemployment than they did working their jobs. That brought fairness into question.“If you're a janitor and you work at the hospital, you're getting the same pay as before and you’re facing increased risk at your job,” Gangong said. “If you're a janitor and you're at a school, you're going to get paid 40 to 50% more on UI benefits than you were getting when you were working.”Ganong estimates about two thirds of unemployed workers have benefits that are greater than their prior wage. But that will soon change. As businesses start opening back up, that option won’t be available for many.“If your employer calls you back to work, even if your UI benefits are higher than your prior wage, you're required to go back to work or you'll lose your benefits,” Ganong said.Under the CARES Act, that higher level of benefits is set to expire July 31.Brittany’s three-month voluntary leave comes to an end in August.“If the flights don’t start picking up significantly, because right now with the CARES Act, we can’t get furloughed. But starting in October, that’s when technically we could. So, I think everyone’s keeping their hopes up that we are able to continue working come October,” Horn said.And Candelaria is awaiting a decision from the district on what going back to school looks like, before factoring in her health concerns.“None of us want it, so that’s why we’re staying safe at home and building classrooms in homes,” she said. 3910

At Uptown Wines, Beer & Spirits, sales have surged since the COVID-19 crisis started and are expected to rise even more during the holidays.“Last time I’ve seen sales like this, it would be considered New Year’s, Thanksgiving and Halloween night,” said beer specialist Wiley Deerman.Deerman says with more people quarantined at home many started stocking up on alcohol to-go.“We’ve seen a lot of these half-sized bottles, the sales have increased on those,” he said.Now, new research from Vanderbilt University shows not only are more people drinking alcohol and abusing other drugs during the pandemic, but that this increase could create new addicts as well.“You’re seeing an increase in drinking, in drug use in people at home. When the pandemic’s over, this isn’t going to go away," said Erin Calipari, Ph.D., with the Vanderbilt Center for Addiction Research.Calipari’s team conducted the study, which shows addiction triggers during the COVID-19 crisis could make the holiday season even worse for many adults struggling with sobriety.To help fight this problem, Calipari says America needs the same kind of investment in battling addiction as is being put into solving the pandemic.“Addiction kills just as many people as the pandemic has this year and we haven’t done the same thing,” she said. “We’ve kind of, you know, funded it a little bit but we haven’t had this community investment and this kind of global revelation that this is a problem that we should be solving.”Without proper attention, Calipari predicts addiction cases will continue to increase across the country, even after there’s a cure for COVID-19.“This isn’t going to go away when we get the vaccine or solve the pandemic,” she said. “This is going to be a kind of long-term problem that we’re going to have to deal with as a society.”A very costly problem both in money and human lives.That’s why Deerman’s business focuses on more than making a buck, saying the best way to serve his community is to sometimes actually not serve them at all.“There’s times where we have to say, ‘Look, I think you need to cut back, take it easy. we care about you,’” he said.Care about stopping an addiction before it even starts. 2203
