(KGTV) - Extra security officers are in place at Eastlake High School in Chula Vista Friday due to confusion over a school threat at a similarly named school near Tampa, Florida.Pinellas County, Fla. deputies found an unspecific threat written on a wall of a girl’s bathroom at East Lake High School in Tarpon Springs Thursday, according to TampaBay.com. The threat, which was also posted on Snapchat, warned students not to come to school Friday.Word of the Florida threat spread on San Diego County social media pages Thursday night, according to Sweetwater Union High School District spokesperson Manuel Rubio.There is no credible threat to Eastlake High School, Rubio said.As a precaution, the local school added extra security officers on campus Friday.  Families also received an automated phone call Friday morning to reassure them the campus was safe, according to Rubio.The written threat to Florida's East Lake High School has also been deemed not credible, said Pinellas County Sgt. CHULA VISTA, Calif., (KGTV)- It has been one week since the brutal attack and rape of a young woman at Otay Park. But Chula Vista Police say their investigation is far from over. Now nearby schools are reminding parents to stay vigilant. Chula Vista Police said last Monday, a woman in her 20’s was exercising on the stairs at Otay Park. But on her way down, someone pushed her from behind, knocking her unconscious.The perpetrator then raped her, stole her things, and ran.When she woke up, she managed to flag someone down at the park, who then called 9-1-1.It has been seven days into the investigation. But the Chula Vista police department says the perpetrator is still at large. Detectives are now reviewing and enhancing several pieces of video evidence.They are also waiting to get the results of the victim’s rape kit. Last week, Otay Elementary School Pirincipal, Monica Castillo sent a letter to parents addressing the recent crime that happened next to school property. 1009

(KGTV) - A South Bay public official is doubling down on anti-Muslim comments as he prepares a campaign to become Chula Vista's mayor.Hector Gastelum resisted calls to resign from the Otay District Water Board in 2017 after his tweets referred to Muslims as sub-human scum. He just qualified for the June run-off to become the Mayor of Chula Vista, the county's second largest city.In an interview, Gastelum said he isn't backing down from his prior controversial comments. "How can you not condemn rape? How can you not condemn pedophilia? Or throwing gays from the roof," Gastelum said, clarifying he is not referring to all Muslims. "If people don't like what I stand for, they can vote for the person that's going to take more taxes from them."Hanif Mohebi, who runs the San Diego chapter of the Council of American Islamic Relations, called Gastelum's comments bigoted and hateful."Are we referring to other criminals by their religion?" he said. "(Charleston church shooter) Dylan Roof and many others. Are we referring to others by their religion? If not, then why are we singling out this community and referring to them by their religion."Gastelum is running against Incumbent Mary Salas, teacher Arthur Kende, and Parks Supervisor Daniel Schreck for the seat. The top two vote-getters in June move on to a November runoff. Gastelum's campaign statement has no anti-Muslim comments. Instead, it talks about cutting taxes, eliminating Chula Vista's welcoming city program, and bringing Amazon back to the table to put its headquarters here. The Otay Water District board censured Gastelum last year. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - After hours of listening to public comment, the Chula Vista Planning Commission decided to table and continue an item that would bring a new recreational storage facility to the city's Eastlake area. The proposed facility would store 80 to 100 vehicles, like boats or RVs, on land between Eastlake High School and Antigua, a gated town-home community.Homeowners begged the planning commission to not accept the plans for the facility saying it would be an eyesore for their properties and lower their property values. The property manager of Titan Storage also made his case before the commissioners, citing the need for the facility in a part of town that is growing quickly. RV owners asked the commission to consider accepting the plan because they say surrounding RV lots are full, forcing them to store their vehicles across town. Ultimately, three commissioners said they could not support the plan as presented and voted instead to continue the item to a future date, giving the storage company time to present a revised plan. So far, no date is scheduled for the next public hearing on this issue. 1143
