SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the government shutdown approaches its third week, San Diego’s food stamp recipients are preparing for possible changes to their benefits. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or food stamps, helps feed roughly 40 million Americans. According to the USDA, eligible recipients are guaranteed benefits through January. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is expected to make a statement this week on SNAP funding into February, according to San Diego Hunger Coalition spokesman Joseph Shumate, citing the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP).Any SNAP adjustments could also increase the burden on San Diego charities. Many Feeding San Diego beneficiaries also rely on SNAP to help their families, the organization said."For every one meal we do, the SNAP program does 12 meals," said Feeding San Diego CEO, Vince Hall. "That is a 12 to 1 ratio, so any cut to SNAP is going to have dramatic effects on charities already struggling to keep up with the demand, the unmet need for food across our communities."Hall says they are preparing for worst-case scenarios, like the shutdown continuing for weeks or months. According to CBPP, the USDA may rule that the only appropriation available for SNAP after January is the program’s billion “contingency reserve,” which was made available through the fiscal year 2018 appropriations act. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Arson investigators Saturday were looking into multiple fires set within a three-mile radius of each other in Ocean Beach and Point Loma.The first fire was set at about 1 a.m. on Muir Ave. in Ocean Beach. Three more fires were set on Piedmont Dr. and Catalina Pl. in the Point Loma area, San Diego Fire-Resuce Department said.No structures were damaged and no injuries were reported. Each fire was set in rubbish behind homes, according to SDFD. Due to the proximity and similarities between the small fires, fire officials said the fires were "suspicious" and arson investigators were looking at whether they were connected. No arrests have been made."The San Diego Metro Arson Strike Team (MAST) is investigating several suspicious rubbish fires which occurred last night in the Point Loma and Ocean Beach communities. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — County law enforcement officials say overdose deaths from fentanyl have sharply increased since last year.The San Diego County District Attorney Office said in the first six months of 2020, there have been 203 fentanyl-related deaths: 119 have been confirmed and 84 are pending confirmation. The victims range in age from 17 to 66 years old.In all of 2019, there were 152 fentanyl-related overdose deaths in the county."This alarming uptick demonstrates that dealers continue cutting various illegal drugs with fentanyl and now more than ever it’s a recipe for death," said District Attorney Summer Stephan. "The public needs to be aware of the danger of using any controlled substance even if packaged like a harmless medicinal pill. Higher overdose numbers tell us there’s likely more product on the street in San Diego that may be laced with deadly fentanyl. His roommates found him dead in the morning from a fentanyl overdose.In May, a 19-year-old purchased two Percocets from a friend. He consumed both pills and subsequently died from an overdose. Even in doses as little as two milligrams, the drug is lethal for most people.
