BENTONVILLE, Ark. – Walmart announced Tuesday that it’s launching a new membership program called Walmart+ that can save customers money and time.Walmart+ members will receive unlimited free delivery from stores, fuel discounts and access to tools that make shopping faster, the company said in a press release.Membership will be available to all customers on Sept. 15 and it will cost a year or .95 per month, a similar price point to Amazon Prime. The Walmart+ membership also includes a 15-day trial period.Amazon, one of Walmart’s biggest competitors, has been offering Prime since 2005 and has racked up more than 150 million members, so the retail giant has an uphill battle to catch up, The Associated Press reports. The initial list of Walmart+ benefits are below:Unlimited free delivery: In-store prices as fast as same-day on more than 160,000 items from tech and toys to household essentials and groceries. This service was previously known as Delivery Unlimited – a subscription service that allows customers to place an unlimited number of deliveries for a low, flat yearly or monthly fee. Current subscribers will automatically become Walmart+ members.Scan & Go: Unlock Scan & Go in the Walmart app — a fast way to shop in-store. Using the Walmart app, customers can scan their items as they shop and pay using Walmart Pay for a quick, easy, touch-free payment experience.Fuel discounts: Fill up and save up to 5 cents a gallon at nearly 2,000 Walmart, Murphy USA and Murphy Express fuel stations. Sam’s Club fuel stations will soon be added to this lineup.Walmart says the list of benefits will continue to grow over time. These benefits come in addition to the retailer’s existing customer offerings like free curbside pickup, NextDay delivery and two-day delivery. Walmart will continue to have delivery options with a per-delivery transaction fee so customers can choose the service that’s best for them.“Customers know they can trust us and depend on us, and we’ve designed this program as the ultimate life hack for them,” said Janey Whiteside, Walmart’s chief customer officer. “Walmart+ will bring together a comprehensive set of benefits where we see the greatest needs from our customers and where our scale can bring solutions at an unprecedented value.” 2300

Before arriving for jury duty on Monday, prospective panel members filled out a lengthy questionnaire that might have given them pause."The case for which you are summoned involves the defendant JOAQUIN ARCHIVALDO GUZMAN LOERA, also known as 'El Chapo,' " read query No. 48. "Have you read, seen or heard anything about the defendant, the case, or people involved?"It would be hard not to."In some ways, this case is unprecedented; the amount of public attention has been extraordinary," Brooklyn U.S. District Court Judge Brian Cogan wrote in a recent ruling. That will be a major challenge when jury selection begins on Monday for Mexican cartel boss Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.Everything is extraordinary in the long-awaited case against a defendant once considered the world's most powerful drug trafficker. The international scope of an alleged criminal enterprise that spanned continents "makes it an outlier among even the biggest drug prosecutions to date," Cogan wrote last week. 993

Brookstone filed for bankruptcy and will close its remaining 101 mall stores. The mall and airport seller, best known for massage chairs, quirky gadgets, and travel luggage, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in federal court on Thursday. It was Brookstone's second bankruptcy filing in four years. The company will keep its 35 airport stores and website open and running while it attempts to find a buyer. It has secured a million loan to finance operations during the sale.Brookstone's CEO said in a statement that its airport and online businesses were successful, but an "extremely challenging retail environment at malls" forced the company to close its stores there.Unabated traffic losses at malls have plagued brick-and-mortar sellers. Mall vacancies reached a six-year high last quarter as a wave of stores closed, including Walgreens, Bon-Ton, Sears and Kmart, Best Buy, Kay and Jared, Matress Firm, and GNC."They're trapped in hundreds of these B and C malls, whose traffic has been in serial decline," said Mark Cohen, the director of retail studies at Columbia Business School. "Where they are in triple-A malls, they're faced with very high rent."In 2014, Brookstone filed for bankruptcy and was sold to a Chinese consortium for 6 million. At the time, Brookstone operated 240 stores. The company, which started in 1965 with a classified ad in Popular Mechanics magazine, struggled to implement a digital strategy as shoppers found more places online to buy speakers, headphones, and tech tools they used to only be able to find at Brookstone."The category is Amazon bait," Cohen said. "They lost the thread of newness, innovation and excitement."Steven Schwartz, Brookstone's former chief merchandising officer and interim CEO, called Brookstone's decline "heartbreaking" in a phone interview last week."We were an amazing store company, but we didn't have our eyes on the ball the right way digitally." 1927

BOZEMAN, MT — If you know Montana, you likely know it's beauty. From the snow in the mountains in winter to the foliage in autumn. But you probably don't think of it as an important political state. This year, however, you would be mistaken. WHY MONTANA MATTERSWhile President Donald Trump will likely easily win Montana in the presidential race, when it comes to the Senate race, things are far from certain. That's because incumbent Republican Senator Steve Daines is battling incumbent Democratic Governor Steve Bullock. The winner will represent Montana for the next six years. The race is considered by most, including the Cook Political Report, a toss-up. During a recent interview, Daines explained how this race is a toss-up. "I'm running against an incumbent Governor," Daines said near his home in Belgrade, Montana. While Daines admitted Montanans have an independent streak, he believes ultimately supporters of Trump will support his campaign. "If you sum up what I stand for it's more high paying jobs and less government," Daines said. Meanwhile, Bullock says voters may be backing Trump in Montana but they are aren't afraid to back a Democrat for Senate. "A quarter of my voters voted for Donald Trump," Bullock told Scripps' National Political Editor Joe St. George. "It's about whether somebody is going to fight for you along the way," Bullock added. WHAT'S AT STAKE FOR THE SENATECurrently, Republicans have a 53-47 majority in the United States Senate. While Republicans are expected to pick up Alabama this election, Democrats believe they are in position to take back 4 states at least. If, for instance, Democrats win Arizona, Colorado, Maine and North Carolina, depending on who is in the White House, control of the entire United States Senate will come down to Montana. Whoever controls the Senate is very important for whoever wins the White House. If one party controls both the Senate and White House, justices to the United States Supreme Court could easily be appointed. If one party controls the House, Senate and White House, far more ambitious legislation can be passed by elected officials. FUNDRAISING RECORDSThe importance of the U.S. Senate is highlighted in the record-breaking fundraising across the country. Nationwide, billions will be spent on 35 senate races this year. In South Carolina, Democrat Jamie Harrison raised a record million in just one quarter in his election against Republican Senator Lindsay Graham. Back in Montana, records are also being set. "This will be the most expensive election in Montana history," Mike Dennison, a longtime political reporter in the state, said. Dennison, who works for Scripps' Montana News Network, estimates over million will be spent on this race and on relatively few undecided voters. "All the money is fighting over about 10 percent of those voters so maybe 60,000 to 70,000 people," Dennison said. 2912
