TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Florida Education Association announced a lawsuit against the state's emergency order that forces districts to physically reopen public schools five days a week in August, despite concerns from parents and educators regarding the spread of COVID-19.The lawsuit was filed Monday in state circuit court in Miami against Gov. TAMPA, Fla. — A Tampa Catholic school experienced heightened police presence and low attendance Tuesday after a former contracted employee threatened violence on campus. "When I first walked into school there was like eight people and then like they kept saying there was like police and a lockdown drill will happen," said Sofia Diaco, a fourth-grade student at Academy of the Holy Names. Tampa Police advised school officials at Academy of the Holy Names to operate on a modified lockdown Tuesday as they searched for the person who threatened to "shoot up the school.""There's no question that when you hear about such a specific and violent threat, you worry about your children's safety and you entrust that safety to the school," said parent Dan Diaco. Ainya Smalls, 23, was arrested for making the threat in front of students and staff as a supervisor escorted her off campus after being terminated on Monday. Smalls worked for a cleaning company hired by the school. "A lot of people were scared, some post-traumatic issues from some of the children, and some of the parents to be honest," Diaco said. Scripps station WFTS in Tampa has learned, Smalls already had a warrant out for her arrest for criminal mischief while she worked at the historic Catholic school. Officials say Smalls passed a Level 2 background check provided by the cleaning company. But after this incident, they will now conduct their own screenings for all contracted employees and plan on re-screening every member of the cleaning staff. "I think the Academy's new policy of taking control of the background checks is a wonderful remedy to help prevent something like this from happening again," Diaco said. TAMPA, Fla. -- A former Tampa Bay Lightning player is on his way to becoming a sworn firefighter for the city of Tampa.“I think it’s very similar to the teamwork, the bond together, the brotherhood. It keeps you in shape and it’s very important for us to keep people safe and I want to be a hero to my children,” said Nikita Alekseev.Alekseev is a former first-round draft pick for the Lightning. Since then, he’s studied, graduated from the fire academy, has had EMT training and is finishing his final days of recruit training for Tampa Fire Rescue over the next week.“I have a lot of friends in the service here. I’ve been in the stations throughout my career just visiting and I’m a big community guy so I really like to help the people of the city,” he said.On Thursday, he said his focus was on consistency and efficiency.“Obviously, we’re just starting out so I want to get as much info on every little situation where it’s gonna help me to save my life and my crew. It’s very important to listen to what the instructor’s saying,” he said.The city’s new hires ran through engine company operations, practicing with the fire hose, going through a building and putting water on a building.“It doesn’t matter how big you are, how strong you are, you have to have a technique. It’s a lot of water and you can’t win it. So a lot of good instructors showed me how to do the right things, how to position yourself right and so it helps a lot,” Alekseev said.His fellow recruits include newcomers and legacies, everyone starting from the same place no matter their background.“What I hope is they take the training out here, bring it to the street, continue the training to continue gaining experience, knowledge and becoming a well rounded professional firefighter,” said Tampa Fire Rescue Captain Dan Quatrino.Alekseev and 14 others are part of the department’s first recruit class during the pandemic.“It makes a lot of the day to day operations we do unique and new to all of us,” said Quatrino.After finishing their final days of training, they’ll be sworn in next week.“It’s a small step to achievement, I guess. I want to make proud of the instructors, my friends in the service, my family, my kids, so it’s not really about me it’s about who’s behind this,” said Alekseev.Alekseev said his message to others, is to have goals, work towards them and follow-through, no matter your age.“Ultimate goal? TAMPA, Fla. — Police say that street racing led to the death of a mother struck by a vehicle while pushing her child in a stroller in Tampa, Florida. Three people have been arrested.According to Tampa Police, two cars were street racing down Bayshore Boulevard on Wednesday afternoon when one of the vehicles struck the mother and child near W. Knights Avenue in Tampa.Tampa police say the mother, 24-year-old Jessica Reisinger, and the 2-year-old child were sent to the hospital with serious injuries. Reisinger died at the hospital and the 2-year-old is currently in serious condition.  616
