EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - When their friend was diagnosed with cancer, two El Cajon fifth-graders never imagined it would make her feel unwelcome at school. "She was coming back to school for half days because she was feeling a little bit better, and we heard that she was being bullied," said Wriley Lee, referring to her friend Trianne Nguyentu.Lee and another student, Matthew Stevens, decided they needed to do something to support Nguyentu. "Honestly, at first, I didn't believe them. I thought they were trying to get a rise out of me because it was so unexpected," said Principal Tita Cordero-Bautista. But the students were serious, so Cordero-Bautista teamed up with a school counselor to guide the students through the process.To teach more students a lesson in empathy and compassion, the counselor helped Lee and Stevens give an announcement to their classmates explaining their choice. "Appearance doesn't really matter; it just matters what's on the inside," said Lee. EL CAJON (CNS) — A woman was killed by a hit-and-run driver Saturday evening in El Cajon.The crash occurred at the intersection of Dehesa and Sycuan roads about 9:30 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.The details of the collision were not immediately available.The vehicle that hit the woman left the scene before CHP units arrived, the department reported.She died at the scene and her name was withheld pending notification of next of kin, the CHP said.A description of the hit-and-run driver and vehicle were not immediately available. 560

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - The El Cajon man who is accused of beating his roommate to death with a frying pan says he's not guilty. Brad Payton showed no expression as he was arraigned on Thursday afternoon in front of an El Cajon judge.An attorney spoke for Payton who entered the “not guilty” plea during the video-streamed initial court appearance since the attack, which happened exactly one week ago. Deputy DA Carlos Campbell told 10News that the crime comes with a sentencing of 26 years to life in prison.The attack happened before sunrise at an independent living facility on Naranca Avenue in El Cajon. Police say the two men were heard arguing before 25 year-old Payton allegedly grabbed a frying pan and beat the other man to death. 10News spoke to the victim's mother on the day he was attacked, before she knew he died. She said he suffered from a developmental disability and didn’t like to follow the rules, which was how he ended up at the living facility. His name has still not been released by the Medical Examiner’s Office. The county lists the property where the attack happened as a home to those with physical or mental disabilities. According to authorities, the fire started on the 1200 block of Naranca Avenue just after 7 p.m. Nine people were displaced by the fire. Heartland Fire says the flames were contained to one bedroom. (KGTV) - After a series of crashes over the summer, people in El Cajon are calling on the city to add some safety measures to the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and Renette Avenue."It's very dangerous," says Julia Reyes, who lives near the intersection. "We have a lot of families and kids crossing through here. We have two schools near here too.""It's a regular race track," says David Pina, who also lives on the corner. He recently replaced the fence in his yard because a suspected drunk driver plowed into it over Memorial Day weekend."We were all in the house and heard a big bang in the street and all of the sudden, boom, right in the yard," he says.The intersection has stop signs for cars headed East and West. There are also cones and left-turn restrictions in the middle of the intersection. Pina says that only makes it worse."That sign ends up in the street all the time," he says of the "No Left Turn" sign in the middle of the road. He adds that people ignore the cones and drive straight through the intersection illegally.Neighbors have asked the city to install traffic-calming measures. They think a stop sign, speed humps, flashing lights or a sturdier barrier could be a solution.10News reached out to the City of El Cajon to see if there have been any discussions about adding safety measures to the intersection. A spokesperson from the Department of Public Works asked us to submit a formal public records request. Because of the holiday weekend for Labor Day, the city has not had a chance to reply to that submission.For Pina, he hopes something can be done soon. He worries that the next crash may cost him more than just a fence."My grandson sleeps in that front room," he says. "You gotta worry about the kids.
