President-elect Joe Biden met with his Transition Team's COVID-19 Advisory board for the first time on Monday morning, and delivered remarks following the meeting."I will spare no effort to turn this pandemic around when I'm sworn in on Jan. 20," Biden said.In his remarks, Biden congratulated Pfizer on the company's Monday announcement that early studies show its vaccine candidate is 90% effective in fighting the virus. However, Biden cautioned that even in best-case scenarios, the vaccine won't widely be available for several months. He promised that once vaccine candidates are approved, he will ensure that doses are distributed safely and efficiently. In addition, Biden called on manufactures to ramp up production of personal protective equipment and also said he planned to order more rapid test kits for use across the country. Finally, Biden spent several moments promoting the use of masks, calling them "the most potent weapon against the virus."It doesn't matter who you voted for...it doesn't matter your party or point of view," Biden said. "We could save tens of thousands of lives in the next few months if everyone just wears a mask."The address in Wilmington, Delaware came hours after Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris announced the formation of a COVID-19 Advisory Board as part of their administration's White House Transition Team. The Biden-Harris Transition team said the board would consist of public health experts who will advise both Biden and Harris.“Dealing with the coronavirus pandemic is one of the most important battles our administration will face, and I will be informed by science and by experts,” Biden said in a press release “The advisory board will help shape my approach to managing the surge in reported infections; ensuring vaccines are safe, effective, and distributed efficiently, equitably, and free; and protecting at-risk populations.”The board consists of:CO-CHAIRSDr. David Kessler: Professor of Pediatrics and Epidemiology and Biostatistics at UCSF. President George H.W. Bush, 93, was hospitalized Sunday morning, less than one day after his wife's Barbara memorial service, a Bush family spokesperson said on Monday. "President Bush was admitted to the Houston Methodist Hospital yesterday morning after contracting an infection that spread to his blood," Bush spokesman Jim McGrath said. "He is responding well to treatments and appears to be recovering." Bush's wife of 73 years Barbara Bush died last Tuesday after a period of failing health from COPD and heart disease. President Bush was present on Saturday at his wife's memorial service, which was attended by former Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama. Bush has had several recent spells of poor health. In April 2017, Bush had an extended hospital stay after suffering from pneumonia. Earlier in 2017, Bush was unable to attend President Donald Trump's inauguration due to treatment for a blockage from his lungs. Bush also has a mild form of Parkinson's Disease, which has kept him in a wheelchair since 2012. Bush is the oldest former President ever at age 93 years and 315 days, which is 111 days older than Jimmy Carter, and 150 days older than when Gerald Ford died in 2006. 1254

Puerto Rico’s elections commission says it has discovered more than 100 briefcases containing uncounted ballots a week after the U.S. territory held its general election, drawing criticism and scorn from voters who now question the validity of the outcomes of certain races. Francisco Rosado, the commission’s new president, said Tuesday that the briefcases were found in a secured vault and blamed the situation on what he said was an underfunded and understaffed administrative board responsible for counting a record number of absentee and early votes. 563

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Associated Press has declared President Donald Trump the winner in North Carolina, though Joe Biden is still projected to win the presidency. The AP concluded Friday that there were not enough outstanding ballots remaining to be counted in the state that would allow Joe Biden to overtake Trump’s lead of 73,697 votes.Friday was the deadline for counties in North Carolina to certify their results. Following updates from most counties in the state, Trump leads Biden by 1.3 percentage points.Trump campaigned aggressively in North Carolina with in-person rallies at the height of the coronavirus pandemic, including gatherings in Fayetteville, Winston-Salem and Greenville in the weeks before the election. He was scheduled to hold the Republican National Convention in the state but pulled out after a fight with the state’s Democratic governor over coronavirus restrictions. It was moved to Jacksonville, Florida, before being largely canceled all together.Trump’s win in the Tar Heel State puts the president at 232 electoral votes and Joe Biden remains at 290 votes.Biden is still projected to win the presidential election, since he has surpassed the 270-vote threshold needed to claim victory. The only state the AP has yet to call is Georgia, which is conducting a recount because neither Biden or Trump leads by more than .5 percentage points. Results show that Biden leads Trump in the Peach State by more than 14,100 votes. 1460
