XIANGNING, Shanxi, April 11 (Xinhua) -- The death toll in the flooded Wangjialing coal mine in north China's Shanxi Province rose to 28 after one more body was recovered Saturday afternoon.Rescuers are searching for the 10 miners who remained missing, the rescue headquarters said.About 280,000 cubic meters of water had been pumped out by Saturday, more than two times of the planned volume, said the spokesman Liu Dezheng at a press conference.The water in section two had been all drained up and the search work there had been finished, Liu said.More than 60,000 meters of water had been pumped out in section one, nearly four times than planned, but the water level fell much slower than expected, Liu said.Toxic gas also brought great difficulties to rescue work, he said.A total of 261 miners were working below ground when the mine was flooded on March 28, and 108 miners escaped unharmed while 153 were trapped underground.On Monday, 115 miners were brought out of the mine alive after being trapped for more than a week. They are receiving medical care in five hospitals in Hejin and Taiyuan Cities.

He said in addition to cooperation in traditional fields, the two sides should actively promote cooperation in energy saving, environmental protection, new energy, agriculture and farm produce processing, and among small and medium size businesses to seek long-term, stable and reciprocal common development.The two countries should strengthen cultural exchanges, facilitate language education, two-way travel, and dialogue between each other's media and think tanks, Hu added.He said China and France are expected to together meet local and global challenges to achieve a peaceful and stable international environment, citing reform of the international financial system, improving the global economic governance structure and coping with climate change.Hu told the press conference he and Sarkozy agreed to keep in close consultation on global issues and to conduct active cooperation to solve international and regional disputes by peaceful means.He said the Chinese side sets a high value on the role the EU play in international affairs and appreciates the constructive stance taken by the French side in promoting China-EU relations.When meeting the press, Hu noted France is the initiator of the reform of the global economic governance mechanism.Hu added China supports France's holding of next year's G20 summit.France will hold the presidency of the G20 summit this November and host the 2011 summit.Sarkozy said France is willing to work closely with China to ensure a successful summit.He said that China is a very important strategic partner of France and they both need to cooperate closely on major global issues such as pushing economic growth, and maintaining world peace.He said there is only one China in the world and that Taiwan and Tibet are both part of China. This is the policy France has been adhering to since the France-China diplomatic ties were established in 1964. There is no change in the policy.He said France is willing to work with China to further beef up cooperation and exchanges in fields including peaceful use of nuclear energy, aviation, transport, environmental protection, finance, agriculture and culture.After talks with Sarkozy, Hu said he will visit France at the invitation of Sarkozy.As a guest of Hu, Sarkozy is paying a state visit to China from April 28 to 30. He kicked off the visit in Xi'an, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province. He will attend the opening ceremony of the Shanghai World Expo on April 30.

  

TASHKENT, April 24 (Xinhua) -- Uzbek President Islam Karimov and visiting Chinese State Councilor Meng Jianzhu both have pledged to deepen the mutually beneficial cooperation between their countries. Uzbekistan wishes to further deepen its mutuallu beneficial cooperation with China on politics, economy, trade and security, which will benefit the two countries and the two peoples, Karimov said Friday during a meeting with Meng.China-Uzbekistan relations developed smoothly in 2009, said Meng, who also attended the fifth session of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Security Council Secretaries in Tashkent.Leaders of the two countries have kept close contacts, which is a strong driving force for the development of bilateral ties, Meng said.The two countries have expanded their pragmatic cooperation in various fields and conducted effective cooperation on international and regional issues, he said.China values its traditional friendship with Uzbekistan and wishes to promote the friendly and cooperative partnership between the two countries. The partnership complies with the fundamental interests of the two countries and it is conducive to maintaining regional peace and stability, Meng said.During his visit, Meng also held talks with Uzbek Interior Minister Bahodir Matlubov and Chief of Security Rustam Inayatov.The two sides held an extensive and in-depth exchange of views on exchanges of law enforcement agencies and the promotion of law enforcement cooperation between the two countries.

  

WELLINGTON, May 17 (Xinhua) -- Visiting General Guo Boxiong, vice-chairman of China's Central Military Commission, met Monday here with New Zealand Prime Minister John Key, and both sides pledged further efforts to promote military cooperation.Although China and New Zealand are far apart geographically, the two countries have been very friendly to each other, Guo said.Bilateral ties have developed rapidly with frequent high-level visits, enhanced cultural and humanitarian exchanges, and closer economic cooperation, Guo said.He also hailed the increase of two-way trade volume between China and New Zealand in the wake of the global financial crisis, and said that New Zealand was the first Western country to sign a free trade agreement with China.In recent years, the two countries have been developing their military-to-military relations in an active manner under the principles of mutual respect, mutual trust, equality and mutual benefit, said Guo, adding that exchanges were also held in such areas as group visits, negotiations and talks, as well as personnel training.
