INDIANAPOLIS -- More than a dozen protesters were arrested Monday afternoon after they blocked a busy downtown Indianapolis street during rush hour. The group was demonstrating as part of the "Poor People's Campaign" and started at Monument Circle before making their way to the an area outside of the Statehouse. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police were called to the scene after reports of about 50 people blocking the road. Responding officers tried to talk to the protesters and gave them multiple warnings that if they did not leave the street they would be arrested. Police say they spoke to the protesters individually and tried to get them to move, but after being left with no alternative they took five women and nine men into custody. All 14 were arrested for obstruction of traffic. The group claims they were protesting against poverty, racism and other important issues.  925

INDIANAPOLIS -- A guidance counselor at Roncalli High School says she was sad and hurt that school administrators and the archdiocese gave her the option to resign or dissolve her marriage after they learned that she was married to a woman. Shelly Fitzgerald says she was asked to meet with school president Joe Hollowell and Principal Chuck Weisenbach last Friday.At that meeting, Fitzgerald says she was shown a copy of her marriage certificate. Hollowell said someone turned it into him and that he then had to turn it into the archbishop."I was hurt, sad, I was hurt," said Fitzgerald. "I've been there 15 years. I've been a part of a community that loves each other. I was stunned. Fitzgerald says she was given four options: to resign, dissolve her marriage or, "stay kind of quiet and hope that it would, you know, stay quiet until the end of the year and keeping my job as long as possible if it stayed out of the media and then they would not renew my contract the following year. Or depending on how boisterous it became, they would have to move towards sooner termination.""I love my wife very much. I didn't have any intention to resign a job that I adore. For me to walk out was like saying I didn't want to be there anymore and that wasn't the case," said Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald says she's been quiet for the past 15 years and she wants to be honest with the people in her life that love her. "It really wasn't hiding, I'll tell you that. People knew. People I worked with knew. People I called friends and love, that wasn't secret from the school. There are tons of people that knew and loved me. According to the agency, Bush once shaved his head to support a Secret Service agent’s son who’d been diagnosed with leukemia. According to the agency, the security detail all planned to shave their heads to show support for the 2-year-old diagnosed with the cancer. In the town of Schuyler, Nebraska, located about 65 miles west of Omaha, immigration reform is a huge issue.A Cargill beef processing plant is the largest employer there, with a predominately Hispanic workforce.People who live in Schuyler, a town of about 6,000 people, are worried what the economic impact would be on the immigrant workforce there if DACA recipients and their families are forced to leave."In this town, there's a lot of commerce, Hispanic business. And the majority of our clients are Hispanics," said Rosa Lopez, Schuyler restaurant owner.Business owners in Schuyler — with a population that’s nearly 70 percent Hispanic and a business district dominated by Hispanic-owned shops and restaurants — is worried about the repercussions its economy would face if there's no DACA resolution by March."We depend on our youngsters for the future,” resident Irma Cuevas said. “So if that were eliminated, it would completely devastate not only Schuyler, but several other communities.""They're our clients,” Lopez said. “And if they get rid of the program, we would lose them as clients. And they wouldn't be able to contribute to the local economy."Long-time residents, like Luis Lucar, say DACA helps keep — and bring in — more people to the workforce there in Schuyler, which he says used to be a ghost town."If that happened, Schuyler would definitely go back to those years where businesses were closing,” Lucar said. “I don't think we want to see that again. And not only in Schuyler, but other Nebraskan cities that basically survive because of the immigrant workforce."Burrito House owner Chuy Salinas said at the end of the day, DACA recipients should get to stay — not only because it's good for business, but because it's the right thing to do.“Business is business,” he said. “But it's heartbreaking to see the moms and their kids, even if they're older like 22 or 25 — they'd have to be sent back and not even have a place to live.” 1964
