SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Girls Empowerment Camp put on by the San Diego Fire Department started Saturday despite some controversy a few months ago. The camp teaches girls what it takes to be a firefighter. The girls learn how to pull hoses, climb ladders, and climb out of windows just like firefighters do on the job. In February, attorney Al Rava sent a letter to the city attorney on behalf of his client, Rich Allison. The letter claimed that the camp was unwelcoming to boys solely based on their sex. RELATED: Girls empowerment camp rescheduled after abrupt cancellationThe camp was canceled, but days later Mayor Faulconer issued a statement saying the camp would go on. The girls are thankful the camp is back on. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A former gang member and other community leaders went door-to-door knocking on homes to create a conversation about gang violence.Bishop Cornelius Bowser is a former Crips gang member. He saw his best friend get killed in a park in Logan Heights when he was 22 years old. That’s why he’s going around from house to house talking to people who live in the gang “hot-spots.” Bowser says, “If you can address the needs of the community and bring resources into the community and help empower them, you can bring crime rates down.”He says starting a conversation creates a bond and people are more willing to talk if they know you. During their walk, they learned that underage kids are drinking at the park after dark and stolen cars are showing up on Marcy Avenue. Now they will take that information to the police.Bowser also goes to a crime scene and the hospital after a shooting to be there for the victim and the family.Bowser and his team were also handing out resources like phone numbers, upcoming community events, and information on locking up guns to protect kids from accidental shootings.Liliana Hernandez is one resident who opened her door for Bishop Bowser. She saw two killings on her street last year and is very grateful for their support. Hernandez says, “I always try to find ways as to what’s going on in the community and sometimes I’m just lost.”Tracy Swafford lost her 17-year-old daughter to a drive-by gang shooting ten years ago. She walks and knocks on doors, too. Swafford says, “It is important because it lets the people know we are here for them.”There is a community meeting Tuesday, April 16th at 6:30 at Logan Heights Library. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A group of parents rallied in Mira Mesa Thursday morning to urge the San Diego Unified School District to reopen schools for in-person learning sooner rather than later.Since March, the district has kept school doors shut, but officials recently announced plans to initiate Phase 2 of a return plan come January.At Thursday’s rally, parents said that's not soon enough."Kids are depressed. We're trying to get them outside safe, but they need socialization and to be with friends. That's half of what they get out of school,” a parent said.City Councilmember Chris Cate joined parents Thursday in support, adding, "Every day that passes is critical."Cate said San Diego's climate could have easily played a part in welcome all students back to class by now."Outdoor learning, why are we not taking advantage of the climate we have here in San Diego? Yes, it's innovative and costly but ideas could be put forward when we know in fact, and have data that says, 'This is working' or 'this isn't working.’”Even though the trend of rallies has made a difference for districts in Poway, Carlsbad, Del Mar and Vista, it came with a cost.One week after Vista Unified welcomed students back into classrooms, five COVID-19 cases arose in their district, resulting in a lack of teachers to fill in and a quick move by the board to set new rules.Some parents in Vista even thought twice about their decision to send kids back to class, including parent Timothy Hernandez."I think they need to re-evaluate their plan and I wouldn't bring them back until next summer. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A BB gun shooting spree has neighbors frightened Sunday after more than a dozen incidents across San Diego.At the corner of L Street and Sixth Avenue a woman was shot in the arm overnight, according to San Diego Police. She was walking in a small group and one of the men was an exhibitor at Comic Con, staying at the Omni Hotel, where they were headed before the shooting. That man, Sal Abbinanti, said "The girl I was with said a guy in a white car in the back seat, she heard a trigger sound and then she's like oh I think I just got shot which kinda got out attention and then we saw it was bruised and bleeding and it looked like a BB." "There's just so much security down here, so many San Diego police down here. I was surprised that this guy was dumb and brazen to do something like that," he said the hotel provided excellent care to his friend.Over in National City and Paradise Hills, at least a dozen cars were hit.Coronado Police say at least 11 businesses were hit.Downtown, police reported four more instances of people being shot at or hit by BB guns.The rash of crimes comes after 10News reported more than a dozen businesses and car windows busted by BBs in the past month:June 24th – Numerous vehicle windows were vandalized in the Point Loma, Ocean Beach and Mission Hills neighborhoods.July 1st and July 2nd - Three businesses in the Hillcrest neighborhood were vandalized.July 2nd - Two businesses in the Park West neighborhood were vandalized.July 2nd and July 3rd – Numerous vehicle windows were vandalized in the Clairemont neighborhood.July 6th - Three businesses and one vehicle were vandalized in the Midway area. A dark colored SUV is suspected in these cases.July 7th - Five businesses in the College area were vandalized.July 8th - One home in the Lake Murray neighborhood was vandalized.According to California law, negligent discharge of a BB gun resulting in injury could mean up to a year in jail.Police from the corresponding agencies are working on these cases.
