SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Need to blow off some steam? If meditation and yoga don’t do the trick, you can try axe throwing in Mission Valley.Battle Axe SD is generating new interest in the practice that’s similar to a game of darts. Players throw an axe at a wooden target and score points based on where the axe lands. There are three rounds, with five throws per player.Steve and Annie Wyland created the facility after throwing axes on the East Coast. Steve lost his job, and the couple decided to move to San Diego.Their new project offers experiences like birthday and bachelor/bachelorette parties, and corporate outings. Five of the facility’s 11 lanes are dedicated to walk-ins. There’s also league play on Wednesday nights. If you’ve never thrown an axe, don’t worry, BattleAxe SD says. The facility has an “Axpert” to instruct your group on proper throwing form, safety procedures and etiquette.Battle Axe SD is located at 6330 Riverdale St. and open Wednesday through Sunday nights. 993

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — New details are emerging about the death of a man in San Diego Sheriff’s deputies’ custody. A recently released Medical Examiner’s report says an arrestee’s death last year was a "homicide." The District Attorney's office said last year that none of the deputies involved in the in custody death will face any criminal charges. Oscar Leal died last February 28 after deputies responded to his apartment in Vista and detained him. RELATED: D.A.: Officers will not be held liable in 8 officer-involved shootings, 4 in-custody deathsThe autopsy report said the 37-year-old died from a sudden cardiac death due to chronic methamphetamine use, a physical altercation with deputies and being restrained. The Medical Examiner’s homicide classification is not a legal term, but a medical assessment. The DA's office wrote in part of a nine-page summary and statement in December last year: "... His level of methamphetamine intoxication combined with his active resistance combativeness in the duration of the struggle, all contributed to his death ... The deputies involved in his detention acted reasonably under the circumstances in bear no state criminal liability for their actions."The Sheriff Bill Gore wrote in a statement:"I am aware of the Medical Examiner's conclusion regarding the manner of death of Mr. Leal. I respectfully disagree with the classification of the manner of death in this case as a homicide. The pathologist wrote that his death was due to acute methamphetamine toxicity in the setting of agitation, physical altercation, and prone restraint. It was purely due to Mr. Leal's agitation that he was restrained. Peace officers have a duty to restrain those who are agitated and under arrest, as Mr. Leal was. Were it not for Mr. Leal's abuse of methamphetamine he would be alive today. The deputies and nurses on scene rendered immediate aid to Mr. Leal.Mr. Leal brought upon his own death with his choice to use methamphetamine. His manner of death is more accurately classified as an accident."It has not been made clear yet why the medical examiners report took 13 months to be released. 2135

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Qualcomm employees reporting Wednesday the company is laying off workers in San Diego. The San Diego Workforce Partnership confirmed that 1,231 workers will be laid off by June 19 from the company's Sorrento Valley headquarters.Three employees, one reached in person the other two by phone, tell 10News they believe many more will be let go at other locations, including San Jose, Santa Clara, New Jersey and in Europe. A Qualcomm spokesperson told 10News the layoffs are part of a "cost reduction" plan introduced at the beginning of this year: 602

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Purple tier restrictions enacted so close to the holidays hit San Diegans hard. We're in month eight of the pandemic and cases of anxiety and depression are sky high.Licensed Psychologist Dr. Michelle Carcel explained what is causing these strong emotions, "the longevity of it, the continuous stress that we have to endure, the change of our lifestyles."The CDC reports during late June of 2020, 40% of U.S. adults reported struggling with mental health or substance use.Dr. Carcel said it's important to step back and realize what and how you're thinking. "A lot of times we just believe our thoughts, we just believe what we're thinking and that can be very dangerous right now. We need to question what we're thinking, step back and go, 'gosh! Is this really fair to myself?' And use curiosity and compassion."Some have canceled holiday plans with family, due to the rise in coronavirus cases. Others feel guilt and fear of spreading the virus."When we feel guilt, guilt is a transition emotion, it can really help us identify something that we need to learn from or change from or grow from," Dr. Carcel said. "Using that as a stepping stool, a tool, 'Am I feeling guilty because I can't spend time with my family?' If that is the case, 'Why am I doing it?' Most likely you are doing it because you are protecting your loved ones and you care about your loved ones. That is a wonderful and noble thing. Put yourself in a very good position with that thought."Dr. Carcel said a new study shows those who adapted their routine to fit the pandemic are thriving. One adaptation is instead of attending a spin class, going bicycle riding outdoors with a socially distanced group.Others are visiting with friends outside at a distance instead of indoors."This isn't what we actually want our lives to look like, however we do see an end in sight," Dr. Carcel said alluding to vaccine trials that are showing promising results.Dr. Carcel said the better we adapt to the way things are currently, the easier it will be to snap back to our old norms when restrictions are lifted. 2101
