The Senate majority leader suggested that he's "not changing" course on the question of whether the Senate should consider and confirm a Supreme Court nominee during a presidential election year.McConnell was asked by a reporter why he is changing his rhetoric now given that in 2016 he indicated that he believed "the presidential election had to happen before a nomination could go through."McConnell responded, "I'm not changing anything."He said, "I'm just reminding you what the history has been ... You have to go back to the 1880s to find the last time when one party controlled the Senate and another party controlled the Presidency, a vacancy created in a presidential election year was filled. That's a fact."The comments come after McConnell gave interviews over the weekend where he left open the possibility of confirming a Supreme Court nominee in 2020 if Republicans still control the chamber and there's a vacancy on the court, marking a shift over how he treated then-President Barack Obama's nominee in 2016.During the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Merrick Garland by Obama in 2016, Republicans argued that the next president should be the one to choose who the next nominee would be for the Supreme Court seat left vacant by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia. At the time, Republicans did not focus their arguments on the party that controls the Senate as they took the unprecedented move to deny Garland any hearings or votes, instead pointing to the proximity to the elections. 1513
The two boys, ages 7 and 11, were coming across Leavenworth Road when the crossing guard yelled at them to stop, Fithian said."He had the stop sign in one hand, and he yelled stop," she said. "The boys listened, and they weren't struck because he saved their lives."Nill, 88, was taken from the scene with critical injuries and later died at the hospital, according to Kansas City, Kansas police (KCKPD). The driver of the vehicle also was transported to an area hospital.Police have yet to formally release Nill's name. Officials said he worked at the school but was an employee of the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kansas."Eyewitness reports indicate the employee was struck while pushing children out of the way of an approaching vehicle," the Unified Government said in a statement Tuesday afternoon. The vehicle involved stopped at the scene, and the driver was cooperating with the investigation."I offer my deepest sympathies to the family of the Crossing Guard, and I offer our gratitude on behalf of our residents for his selfless sacrifice in protecting our children," Unified Government Mayor/CEO David Alvey said in the statement.KCKPD spokesman Officer Jonathon Westbrook said the guard died while doing his job."It's a very unfortunate situation where the crossing guard who is there to protect the children was struck," Westbrook said. "He was doing his job and doing it well."Christ the King Elementary's school day starts at 8 a.m. The incident happened around 7:55 a.m., so Fithian said several students and parents witnessed the tragedy.A resident who lives near the school said she knew Nill and saw him working at the school often. Tanya Walker said her "heart just dropped" when she learned what had happened. She said vehicles need to slow down in the area near the school."It's uncalled for," Walker said. "When it's a school zone, that's why it's set up. Slow down."On Tuesday morning, Westbrook said it was too early in the investigation for police to know what led to the crash. The collision temporarily closed the east and westbound lanes of Leavenworth Road between 52nd and 54th streets. By 11 a.m., the road had reopened. The incident will be investigated by the KCKPD Traffic Support Unit/Critical Collision Response Team. This story was originally published by Charlie Keegan and McKenzie Nelson on 2350

The safety of our customers is Kia’s top priority. Kia has and will continue to work with both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the primary government automotive regulator, as well as Congress. We take seriously and share the concerns of Chairman Thune and Ranking Member Nelson regarding the safety of all passenger vehicles. We have openly shared information and data with NHTSA and the Committee and will continue to answer their questions in a full and transparent manner. To gain a full understanding of this industry-wide matter we have respectfully requested the Committee consider a more comprehensive review of non-collision fires among all automakers. Non-collision fires are not limited to Kia vehicles as research from the Highway Loss Data Institute, an independent, nonprofit research organization shows. To quickly and effectively address non-collision fire incidents, KMA is using in-house and third-party fire-investigation companies and has engaged an independent senior fire expert to evaluate the results of such fire event investigations and is consulting with a recent former head of NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation to evaluate the organization’s response to these incidents. We are cooperating with both NHTSA and the Committee to analyze all relevant information associated with any fire or other safety-related matters and will take any necessary corrective action in a timely manner. KMA encourages customers to remedy any open recalls as quickly as possible, including certain 2011-2014 model year Sorento and Optima vehicles identified in June of 2017 (NHTSA Recall Number 17V224) by taking their vehicle to the nearest Kia dealership. Additional information about open recalls may be found by visiting https://www.kia.com/us/en/content/owners/safety-recall or through www.safercar.gov. If a recall is unable to be remedied immediately, KMA will provide alternate transportation at no cost to the customer until their vehicle is repaired or another satisfactory resolution is determined. Owners are encouraged to contact Kia Consumer Affairs at 800-333-4542 with any questions or concerns related to this matter. Full statement from Hyundai 2223
