SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It has been nearly two years since Denelle Mitchell’s husband took his own life. CAL FIRE Captain Ryan Mitchell died by suicide on November 5, 2017, at the Interstate 8 Pine Valley bridge. Denelle Mitchell did not want to talk about the day it happened, but the emotions she dealt with in the days and months after his death are hard to forget. “One of the first feelings I felt was ashamed or embarrassed at the type of way that he died,” Denelle Mitchell said. “It comes and goes in waves of being mad or sad.”Her husband was dedicated to his job — a job that was his passion.“He loved the acts of fighting fires. He loved the community… the brotherhood and sisterhood that they had,” Denelle said. But there were difficult days. “What comes with that is a lot of hard work, a lot of hours away from your home and your family and your friends.” What wasn’t obvious to many were struggles behind the scenes.RELATED: Veterinarian suicides on the rise: Student loan debt, compassion fatigue among factors in suicide increase“He did talk about his depression quite a bit and I lived it with him. I was there with him when we were going through some really hard times,” Denelle said. “Marriage can be hard, owning a home and renovating a home can be hard, having a kid — that’s a lot of life stresses.”There were also tough times at work. “The fire seasons were getting longer and harder,” she said. “There’s days where as a firefighter wife, they come home and they just are so exhausted — mentally, physically, and emotionally drained." The Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance recorded 98 firefighter and EMT suicides so far this year. Jeff Dill, the founder of FBHA, said the number this year is on track to be higher than 2018. In 2018, there were 108 suicides. In 2017, the number was 120. A study by the Ruderman Family Foundation said depression among firefighters is nearly double the general population. Firefighters and police are at higher risk for depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and suicide, according to the study.Denelle now focuses on raising their son, Aiden. She encourages loved ones to pay attention to those who may be struggling. “Don’t just let it go by the wayside. Don’t take no for an answer… try to research the signs,”Denelle said.Locally and statewide, action has been taken to ensure resources are available for first responders. Recently, the County Board of Supervisors approved the Captain Ryan J. Mitchell First Responder Behavioral Health Program, which will offer confidential mental and behavior health support by connecting first responders with a clinical professional. The governor also signed several bills that focus on improving protections for the state’s firefighters and first responders when it comes to mental health. AB 1116 (the California Firefighter Peer Support and Crisis Referral Services Act) establishes statewide standards for peer support programs. SB 542 (the Trauma Treatment Act) will provide “first responders with workers’ compensation while they recover from their mental health scars,” according to a news release from the governor’s office. “Bringing awareness to the topic makes it easier to talk about,” Denelle said. She said she is grateful that she did not have to go through this process alone. “I wanted to thank all our friends and family for the support, especially the Cal Fire community, Local 2881, and Chief Patrick Walker,” Denelle told Team 10. She is now raising money for suicide prevention awareness, This Saturday, she will be participating in the Out of the Darkness San Diego Walk, supporting the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. To donate to her cause, click here.If you or anyone you know needs help, the crisis number is 888-724-7240. 3775

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Marty Coyne snags the same prime spot at Campland on the Bay every Fourth of July weekend. He parks his massive RV right across from the water."Wouldn't trade it in for any other place to stay in the summer," he said Friday. "It's beautiful here, safe here, the grandkids can run free and have a great time."This year - however - the celebration is quite a bit different - due the outbreak of Covid 19.Campland on the Bay, on Mission Bay's north end, is like many hotels along San Diego's coastline. It's not totally booked.Elvin Lai, who owns the Ocean Park Inn in Pacific Beach, said he was booked in the high 60 percents at a time when the hotel is usually full. "It doesn't mean that I won't get last minute bookings but we're used to being sold out for the month of July months in advance, so it's different."On Friday at the campland, the mood was festive, but the activities were limited - the skate park and basketball courts were taped off. There won't be any bands for outdoor entertainment, and indoor dining is disallowed.Campland on the Bay also placed yellow cones on the beach to give people a clear path to the water. It's also requiring all tents to be spaced out by eight feet. Masks are required in public areas, and rangers are carrying around extra.Still, not every visitor was wearing a mask."Everybody doesn't follow it," said Barry Homer, who is staying on the grounds with his wife Cindy. "It'a always a problem everywhere in the world, for lots of reasons."Hotels and Campland are still open to last minute reservations."We anticipate it's going to be be like this no more than today and tomorrow, and then it'll go down to quiet as people go back to their normal lives," said Ahmed Aitlahcen, the campland's general manafger. The Auto Club predicts 107 million residents of the Pacific Coastal states will take trips this summer. That's down 17 percent from 2019. 1916

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Margaret Hunter, the wife of Rep. Duncan Hunter, changed her plea to guilty to one count of conspiracy in a plea deal with the federal government over misused campaign funds Thursday. As part of a plea deal with prosecutors, Margaret Hunter will testify against her husband in his upcoming trial in September. The congressman and his wife both pleaded not guilty in 2018 to federal charges of using 0,000 in campaign funds for personal use and falsifying campaign finance reports. "Defendant agrees to plead guilty to Count One of the Indictment charging her with conspiring with co-defendant Duncan D. Hunter to knowingly and willfully convert Duncan D. Hunter for Congress Campaign Committee funds to personal use by using them to fulfill personal commitments, obligations and expenses would have existed irrespective of Hunter's election campaign and duties as a federal officeholder, in amounts of ,000 and more in a calendar year," the plea deal states. Those expenses include a ,000 family vacation to Italy and a 0 Easter brunch at the Hotel del Coronado.READ THE PLEA AGREEMENT HEREThrough her attorney, Margaret Hunter apologized for her actions through her attorney outside Federal Court on Thursday."I understand that there will be more consequences stemming from my actions, but as demonstrated this morning with the entry of the plea, I have taken the first step in facing those consequences," said Tom McNamara, her attorney, in a prepared statement.According to an affidavit, Hunter allegedly spent the money on expenses like vacations, dental work, tuition, movie tickets, video games and home utilities, among other things. The affidavit goes on to allege that the Hunters lied about the purchases in FEC filings, claiming the money was used for things like dinner with volunteers or campaign contributors, toy drives and teacher/parent events.Rep. Duncan Hunter issued a statement which reads:"I do not have the full details of Margaret’s case, but it's obvious that the Department of Justice (DOJ) went after her to get to me for political reasons. As Margaret’s case concludes, she should be left alone. I am the Congressman, this is my campaign and any further attention on this issue should be directed solely to me. The DOJ’s prosecutorial actions in this case were led by local U.S. Attorneys who attended Hillary Clinton fundraisers in violation of the Hatch Act. The fact remains that this entire matter should have been handled by the Federal Elections Commission (FEC). The DOJ purposely choosing to involve itself in the area where the FEC has primary jurisdiction reveals that their primary agenda was to inflict as much political damage as possible in hopes of picking up a congressional seat. It was politically-motivated at the beginning, it remains politically-motivated now."A trial date was set for September 10, 2019, but that is expected to change following this morning’s court appearance. A conviction would not force Hunter out of office. It takes a two-thirds house vote to do that, meaning 55 Republicans would have to move the same. San Diego Political Analyst John Dadian said he believes Hunter would be expelled if convicted. He added President Trump could pardon him, but it would likely be after the 2020 election. Meanwhile, he said East County Republicans are preparing to file to run if they see an opening. Margaret Hunter is set to be sentenced Sept. 16.DUNCAN HUNTER INDICTED:10News Exclusive: Hunter addresses indictmentCongressman Duncan Hunter and wife indicted for campaign fund misuseREAD: Federal charges against HuntersAffidavit alleges Rep.
