The death of another Fort Hood soldier is under investigation after he was found unresponsive at a nearby lake.On Friday, July 17 at 12:07 a.m., deputy’s with the Bell County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to the area of the Stillhouse Hollow Lake Dam after fishermen in a boat located what they believed to be a body in the water at the base of the dam.Upon arrival, deputy’s found the body 26-year-old Pvt. Mejhor Morta was located in the vicinity of Stillhouse Hollow Lake — located about 15 miles east of the Army base.An autopsy was ordered by Justice of the Peace Garland Potvin.A preliminary autopsy shows the cause of death to be consistent with drowning, but at this time, a full autopsy report has not been completed or released by the Medical Examiner’s Office in Dallas, Texas.Morta's body was found just weeks after officials found the dismembered remains of Pfc. Vanessa Guillen — a soldier stationed on Fort Hood who went missing in April. Officials have not said that the two cases are linked.Morta was from Pensacola, Florida, and entered the Army in September 2019, as a Bradley Fighting Vehicle mechanic. He has been assigned to 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, since May 2020.Friends of Morta say his family is from the Philippines."I reached out to his sister today and they are currently in the Philippines," said Hunter Proffitt, a friend of Morta. "He literally came over here, he joined the U.S. Army to help move his family over here. He wanted to move his family. The defense rested its case Tuesday morning in the trial against former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort without calling any witnesses, setting the stage for closing arguments Wednesday morning.Manafort spoke for the first time in court during the trial, saying he will not testify.Manafort told Judge T.S. Ellis that he would not testify during a brief questioning at the podium before the jury was brought in the room. Manafort is not required to testify because of his Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination. The country's top infectious disease doctor is warning we are in a critical weekend for coronavirus cases."We don't want to see a repeat of the surges that we have seen following of the holiday weekends,” said Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.There were surges after Memorial Day and Fourth of July due in part to large social and family gatherings. Labor Day has the potential to be the same.“One of the things I think vie seen people make a mistake with is they fool themselves about these pandemic pods, like its OK for me to be around this other family and we'll both be safe, and then it will be OK, we'll be like a household, but what many people don’t realize is all these pods are basically interconnected,” said Dr. Dean Blumberg, Chief of Pediactric Infectious Diseases at UC Davis Children’s Hospital. “Very few people actually do that and limit the interaction.”Another reason people get complacent with social distancing and mask wearing is because the people they are around look and act healthy. But infectious disease experts remind us two thirds of transmission of the virus are from people who have no symptoms.Blumberg says he's also seen outdoor gatherings start off with good intentions.“You start off 6 feet distanced, but when you're having a good time, people just naturally forget, and it’s really with the larger social gatherings that this is more of a risk,” said Blumberg.The other big concern with Labor Day gatherings is having virus surges headed into fall and winter. The Department of Justice this week is sending a strong message to American cities: if you can't stop crime, federal agents may be on the way.On Wednesday, Attorney General William Barr announced the launch of "Operation Legend" — named after a 4-year-old boy, LeGend Taliferrom, who was shot and killed while he was sleeping in Kansas City last month.Kansas City is one of several American cities dealing with an uptick in crime. According to the Department of Justice, violent crime is up 40% since last year, with at least 100 murders so far this year.The New York Times recently reported the top 25 largest American cities had seen a 16% increase in murders in recent months.What is "Operation Legend?"The mission will send around 100 FBI, ATF and DEA agents, as well as some U.S. Marshals, to Kansas City to aid in crime prevention.Agents are not expected to assume command of active investigations but rather serve as a deterrent to violent crime."Operation Legend will combine federal and local resources to combat the disturbing uptick in violence by surging federal agents and other federal assets into cities like Kansas City, a city currently experiencing its worst homicide rate in its history," Barr said in a statement.Kansas City will not likely be the last place federal agents go.
