CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A new adult care center is opening next month in Chula Vista. It's the first of its kind, replicating a 1950's town with storefronts and interactive activities. The nonprofit George G. Glenner Alzheimer's Family Centers is behind the new facility, called Glenner Town Square. The indoor, simulated urban environment uses reminiscence therapy to help those with Alzheimer's and dementia, bringing people back to a time where their memories are strongest.Glenner Center's Lisa Tyburski says while the memories experienced at the center don't last forever, they bring patients joy in the moment."They'll leave tired, they'll have had a good day," said Tyburski. "It helps in the evening with sleep, which of course will help with mood the next day."After an assessment with the facility, caregivers can drop off loved ones at the center.Services range from for a full day and per half day. The facility opens in April and will operate Monday through Friday from 8:45 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. 1029

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The Chula Vista City Council Tuesday approved a number of items to help people struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic. The city’s eviction moratorium was extended until at least July 31, giving renters relief if they cannot make their monthly rent payments. The council also approved a .5 million small business grant program to reimburse businesses for losses caused by the closures during the pandemic. The money comes from the federal government. Businesses can apply for the grant on the city’s website and must meet certain criteria. Some of the requirements include having less than 10 employees, being independently owned and not being an essential business. For businesses along Third Avenue, the relief is welcome. Chula Vista Brewery has moved their business outdoors and continued curbside pick-up to stay afloat during the pandemic. In a move to expand outdoor dining, Chula Vista’s council approved a permitting process to allow businesses on Third Avenue to expand into the public right of way, with social distancing and ADA compliance. This will allow for things like sidewalk and curb cafes. The city also authorized the closure of a portion of Third Avenue to traffic. The closure would only be on weekends during certain hours from now until January to allow for dining outdoors, but so far, there isn’t any plan in place to make that official. In addition to relief for businesses and renters, the city voted to accept nearly 0,000 in emergency aid for the homeless. To find out if you qualify for the city's small business grant click here. 1600

CINCINNATI — Six months after his son's suicide, a sobbing Ronald Hummons sped down Interstate 71 with no hope left except that a well-placed pothole might launch him through the windshield of his car and put an end to his half-year of grief. Only the thought of his remaining loved ones finally slowed him down.It also gave him an idea."I decided, you know, what's the best way to try to get over a death situation is to put life into it," he said. That's when he started working on his app: Strike-Back, a tool meant to help people experiencing suicidal feelings save their own lives. Both Hummons men had struggled with depression and thoughts of suicide throughout their lives. Far from pushing his father to speak openly about his inner turmoil, the younger's death left Ronald Hummons paralyzed and afraid."When you talk about a parent who lost their child to suicide, it's like, ‘What did you do wrong?'" Hummons said. "Judgement. We're placed on a judgement list."Hummons' son was TrePierre Hummons, the man responsible for the shooting death of Cincinnati Police Officer Sonny Kim on June 19, 2015.That judgment, or the fear of it, shamed him into a silence he now wants to break for everyone who has seriously considered ending his or her own life. Strike-Back, which is compatible with iOS devices, allows its users to put pictures of their loved ones in a designated folder and add the contact information of anyone they believe would help them in a crisis to another. If that moment ever arrives, users can press a button in the app to send a message and their location to those trusted contacts."You've got a better chance of saving my life by knowing exactly where I'm located at than not knowing," Hummons said.In the meantime, users can look at their loved ones to remember what they would be leaving behind if they acted on their feelings. It worked for Hummons; he believes it can work for others speeding down their own dark roads."I'm going to be a little reluctant to do something because I know it'll cause them just as much harm," he said. "Now, I have that piece to help me hold on just a little bit longer. 2137

CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A former Tijuana police officer was handed a two- year state prison sentence today for his role in a planned break-in of a Chula Vista residence, which he and others believed was a stash house containing around million in drug money.Marco Quijas-Castillo, 28, pleaded guilty earlier this year to one count of conspiracy to commit robbery for the attempted January break-in.A fellow Tijuana officer, Jesus Estrada Torres, 35, was also charged in the case and is awaiting trial on a conspiracy charge.According to preliminary hearing testimony, the two officers and four other men believed a shipment of money would be delivered to the three-bedroom residence, which was actually being rented by the FBI. The defendants were informed of the supposed shipment by an undercover FBI agent, according to testimony.According to the criminal complaint, Quijas-Castillo and Torres crossed into the United States from Mexico with Ignacio Martinez-Cruz, 34, and met up in Chula Vista with fellow defendants Nicholas Jeremiah Shaw, 25, Mario Eugene Hall, 35, and Tomas Emmanuel Ramirez, 30, who allegedly traveled to Chula Vista from San Bernardino County.Castillo and Torres ``provided counter-surveillance'' at a Kohl's store in Chula Vista, while the other four men met with the undercover agent, according to the complaint.Castillo and Torres also provided surveillance near the Chula Vista residence while Shaw walked up to the house, and ``entered a code into a lockbox containing a key to enter the house,'' the complaint alleges.According to testimony, the men planned to tie up two people believed to be inside the home, then take the money, but were arrested by law enforcement upon approaching the home. 1733
