(KGTV) -- Dozens of migrants seeking asylum in the United States are being processed Tuesday afternoon, according to an attorney.Eight migrants were allowed in for processing Monday night followed by dozens more Tuesday afternoon and evening. The rest of the migrant caravan is waiting in Tijuana to be allowed in and processed. The attorney, who is working with the group of migrants, said members of the caravan were asked to choose among themselves who would be processed.MAP: Where is the migrant caravan from?Women and children were reportedly in the first groups of migrants selected Monday and Tuesday. An official with U.S. Customs and Border Protection said that, although this group of migrants has been gaining national attention, the process the group is going through is standard.As far as the process the migrants are going through, CBP said that individuals who don’t have proper travel documents and try to enter into the U.S. may be subject to expedited removal.PHOTOS: Migrant caravan makes way to U.S-Mexico borderThose in expedited removal who express fear of return are then referred to United States Citizenship and Immigration Services.Migrants then go through a “fear interview” to determine whether or not they have a credible fear of persecution or torture.The San Ysidro border inspection facility can hold 300 people. At times, this has required us to limit the number of people we can bring in the port facility for processing at a given time, including in 2016 when an influx of Haitians arrived at the California border, and as recently as within the past six months. In recent days, San Ysidro has exceeded port capacity due to an increase in arrivals of undocumented persons making asylum claims or presenting complex cases. Accordingly, CBP has had to limit the number of new arrivals for processing. CBP will continue to work with its interagency partners at ICE to ensure continued management of persons presenting without documents and appropriate care and custody of all those in our facility,” the spokesperson said in part.Migrants with the caravan have made their trip to the U.S.-Mexico border from three different countries in Central America. (AP) — The U.S. Geological Survey says a magnitude 5.5 earthquake has hit near the Pacific coast of Northern California.The agency says the earthquake struck at 8:53 p.m. at a spot 17.3 miles (27.9 kilometers) southwest of Scotia, a town of 850 people.The earthquake had a depth of 5.6 miles (9 kilometers.)Media reports says the earthquake was felt in the region. (AP) — A Black man in Georgia is accusing police of violating his civil rights, saying a white officer slammed him to the ground and broke his wrist in the mistaken belief that there was a warrant for his arrest. An attorney for 46-year-old Antonio Arnelo Smith of Valdosta, Georgia, said he's still in pain and emotionally devastated more than four months later. Smith is suing Valdosta police and other city leaders in federal court. SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) - An East County family is channeling their pain into helping domestic violence survivors in San Diego. The family's loved one, 19-year-old Kiera Bergman, was murdered last year in Arizona. ”What helps us is being able to help other people and we want her story and her memory to stay alive and that’s why we’re choosing to do donation drives, because we want to be able to help people that are in the same situation she was in," said Mindy Tarantino, Kiera's aunt. Investigators believe Bergman's boyfriend, Jon Clark, is responsible for her death. Clark faces first-degree murder charges and is set to stand trial in a few months. “I'll look at pictures that I have of her and then all of a sudden you just get overwhelmed, I get anxiety really quick, and it just really hits me that she’s gone," said Kiera's grandmother, Sandie Bergman. They are collecting various toiletries and items like diapers to donate to Becky's House, a nonprofit working to break the cycle of domestic violence and homelessness.A donation drive was held in Santee on Monday, but you can also donate online through the family's Amazon Wish List. 1155
