SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities are resuming their search Thursday morning for actress Naya Rivera who disappeared while boating on Lake Piru with her young son.The Ventura County Sheriff's Department tweeted that Rivera may have drowned. Later Thursday, authorities began a recovery effort, saying they believed Rivera had drowned. The 33-year-old actress rented a boat at the lake with her 4-year-old son Wednesday afternoon, authorities told media. Staff at the lake found the overdue rental with her child on board but could not find Rivera.Ventura County Sheriff’s Department Cpt. Eric Buschow told the Los Angeles Times that the boy and Rivera got out of the boat for a swim but she did not follow him back onto the boat. The boy was found sleeping on the boat alone by other boaters in the lake, Buschow said.Buschow said Rivera's son is safe with family members.Rivera, from Santa Clarita, earned stardom after her breakthrough role as cheerleader Santana Lopez on the television musical "Glee." According to her biography, Rivera appeared in commercials for retailer Kmart as a baby then broke into acting at the age of four when she starred as Hillary Winston in the television sitcom "The Royal Family."Rivera recently appeared on YouTube Premium’s “Step Up” series.Tragedy struck the former cast of the hit television show twice over the last decade. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Cool zones are open around San Diego County as the weather heats up. The cool zones, spread out throughout the county, provide designated air-conditioned facilities that provide a place to beat the heat. According to county officials, the cool zones provide a place where seniors and others can congregate to protect their health and reduce individual energy costs. The program has been in operation since 2001. The County Health and Human Services Agency Aging and Independence Services partners with San Diego Gas and Electric to provide the service. Click here for a complete list of county cool zones and their hours of operation. Check out the list below for tips on beating the heat: Slow down. Be your most physically active during the coolest part of the day, usually between 4-7 a.m. Pace yourself when engaging in physical activity.Stay indoors as much as possible. If air conditioning is not being used, stay on the lowest floor. Keep shades down and blinds closed, but windows slightly open.Electric fans do not cool the air, but they do help sweat evaporate, which cools your body.Take a cool shower, bath or sponge bath.Avoid using the oven.Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing. Light colors will reflect away some of the sun's heat.Air out hot cars before getting into them.Never leave children or pets inside vehicles at any time, even with the windows cracked. Temperatures inside a vehicle can reach lethal levels no matter what the weather is like.Drink more fluids than usual even if you do not feel thirsty.Water is the safest liquid to drink during heat emergencies. Avoid drinks with alcohol or caffeine; they make the heat's effects on your body worse.Eat small meals and eat more often. Avoid foods that are high in protein, which increases metabolic heat.Avoid using salt tablets unless directed to do so by a physician. If you take diuretics, ask your physician about a lower dosage during hot weather. If it is safe to do so, leave windows open at night. Open windows on two sides to create cross ventilation.Place a piece of cardboard covered with aluminum foil in sunny windows to reflect sunlight and heat away from the house.Vacuum, clean or replace air filters regularly for maximum cooling efficiency. If affordable, install outdoor awnings or sunscreens.Call your physician if you feel you may be experiencing a heat-related illness. 2412

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As the Timken Museum of Art remains shuttered due to coronavirus-related restrictions, museum officials say they're preparing for whatever a post-pandemic reopening will require. The museum said this week that it plans to install military-grade anti-viral technologies, which will reportedly clean the air of harmful pathogens at a level higher than that of hospital operating rooms."The Timken and Putnam families, innovators themselves, created our free museum in 1965 as a result of their successes in technology and engineering," says museum Chairman of the Board Jessie Knight, Jr. "We are honored to carry on that tradition by being the first museum in the world to bring cutting edge, military grade technology into practical, everyday use."RELATED: In-Depth: Balboa Park's future unfolds during COVID-19 pandemicThe Balboa Park museum had originally planned to incorporate an ultraviolet technology into its existing HVAC system that would eliminate 10% to 20% of airborne pathogens. The new system will "capture and kill" up to 99.7% of pathogens, the museum says."We take our mission of making fine art accessible to everyone very seriously, particularly on the heels of a pandemic when arts and culture are needed more than ever," the museum's Executive Director Megan Pogue said. "When our visitors return to the Timken, they can feel confident knowing we have made this significant, groundbreaking investment that provides a safe, welcoming and enriched environment for all."RELATED: Observation Wheel could bring people back to Balboa ParkWhile the Timken is closed, the new anti-viral system will be installed and tested. The museum is also offering free online classes and lectures on art education and art-making activities and classes. The museum hopes to reopen in 2021, following additional improvements.RELATED: Balboa Park carousel work continues through pandemicThe Timken is not the only Balboa Park attraction using this time to enhance its offerings. Peter Comiskey, the Executive Director of the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership, says that nearly every museum in the park has been refreshing exhibits and facilities."While they've been closed, they've been taking advantage of, in some cases, completely removing all of their pieces and reworking their entire buildings," says Comiskey. 2338

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- At 53 years old, it's definitely an experienced stadium. From the now dried-out grass, to the fluorescent lights up above, inside the stadium in Mission Valley sits the eerie, now empty Chargers locker room. And how about the spiral ramp leading from the Plaza level to the Loge level that every kid raced up and down, a time or two. SDCCU Stadium, Qualcomm Stadium, the Murph, whatever you want to call it, the 53-year-old structure is soon to be a San Diego memory."We will start in the next month or so, disposing of the interior the things. When we knock it down, things need to be taken out, or given a new place," said Gina Jacobs, Associate Vice President of Mission Valley Development. "We're going to try and salvage some of the seats, so that we can make those available for sale."The stadium was home to many great San Diego memories. Who can forget LaDainian Tomlinson's record breaking touchdown? Steve Garvey's playoff home run in 1984? Marshall Faulk running wild one Saturday afternoon against USC?"We certainly recognize that this has been a big part of San Diego's history, and we're looking forward to our new facility being a part of San Diego's future. This is something that is going to be a better fit for San Diego State and for San Diego," Jacobs said.Over the past couple years, we've seen stadium renderings, but now we are seeing progress at the Mission Valley site, as construction is now underway."We are very committed to having the new stadium open in the fall of 2022. It's really gratifying to see that not only are we able to bring to San Diego the things that we have really been looking for, for a really long time. But to do it, in a way that we really integrated community input into the process, and bringing forward something that all of San Diego can be proud of," said Jacobs. 1847

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Clothing retailer Forever 21 announced Tuesday it may close three stores in San Diego County as part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring. The affected locations, which include Fashion Valley, University Towne Center, and Parkway Plaza in El Cajon, could be shut down "pending the outcome of continued conversations with landlords,” according to court documents. Attorneys also said the list of store closures could change pending restructuring efforts.Forever 21 has 800 stores worldwide and plans to close almost 200. "We do however expect a significant number of these stores will remain open and operate as usual, and we do not expect to exit any major markets in the US," the company said. The chain was founded in 1984 in a small Los Angeles store by South Korean immigrants Do Won Chang and his wife, Jin Sook. The chain expanded quickly in suburban malls, and catering to young girls and women with a mix of inexpensive basics. The company perfected the fast-fashion model, drawing in customers with its frequently updated mix of clothes than what was offered at department stores or single brands.CNN contributed to this story. 1169
