SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two local hikers are back in San Diego and after making a bizarre discovery on a remote trail in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. On a beautiful day two weeks ago, Tyler Hofer and Brandon Follin were in their second day of a hike up Mt. Williamson, the state's second's highest peak."Very remote, very rugged," said Hofer. The 14,000-foot summit was just three hours away when they got a bit off track in a boulder-filled area near a lake."It's called the Williamson Bowl. It's a bowl at the foot of Mt. Williamson," said Hofer.Inside the rocky bowl, the two were stepping across boulders when something caught Hofer's eye."I look down and see what appears to be a different color rock. Instead of gray, it's white," said Hofer.Wedged under a small boulder was a human skull."We just start removing rocks about one to two feet in diameter," said Hofer.Under those rocks was a skeleton, mostly intact."The arms were crossed on its chest ... as if you were lying in a casket or coffin ... almost as if someone laid it there peacefully," said Hofer. Also buried in the rocks: the remnants of a leather belt and rubber shoes. "In shock and in awe of what we found and the context in which we found it," said Hofer. The two reached the summit to get cell service and reported their findings to Inyo County deputies. Investigators say there are no signs of foul play and no matches to any missing persons reports. Based on the state of decomposition, the coroner believes the skeleton is several decades old."I'm just honored to be part of uncovering this mystery, because that's what it is," said Hofer.Hofer, a local youth pastor, is hopeful the discovery will lead to answers."That gives me a lot of joy knowing someone is going to get closure. That is someone's loved one," said Hofer.Investigators say they're following up on tips that have poured in. They also plan to conduct DNA tests, before matching results against genealogy databases. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the Inyo County Sheriff's Office at 760-878-0383. 2069

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With hospital beds running short, healthcare workers are trying to care for COVID-19 patients as efficiently as possible, using everything they’ve learned over the last nine months.Improvements in medications and methods have helped shorten hospital stays, said Sharp Memorial Hospital chief medical officer Dr. Tom Lawrie. In March, Sharp said COVID-19 patients stayed 12 days in the hospital on average. In November, the average dropped to 5.3 days. Other institutions have reported similar drops in the length of patient stays.COVID-19 patients now receive a three drug regimen: Remdesivir to fight the virus, a powerful steroid called dexamethasone to prevent the immune system from going haywire, and medications like heparin to reduce blood clotting. On top of that, hospitals have improved techniques like when to use ventilators.“Initially, we were in this conundrum where we weren't sure whether we should intubate patients early or whether we should wait a little later,” Dr. Lawrie said. “Over the last several months we've figured out a really good progression.”The progression now starts with a surprisingly simple technique called proning. Doctors around the country discovered that turning COVID-19 patients onto their stomachs rapidly improved breathing.Early research suggests proning may keep COVID patients off ventilators.“By putting people on their stomach in these positions and by proning them, you allow blood to get where the air is and therefore you get better oxygenation,” Dr. Lawrie said. “It makes the oxygen levels better. It makes their work of breathing better. It makes them feel better generally.”Proning helps move blood from one area of the lung to another where it can receive more oxygen. These regions are called West’s zones of the lung, named after research in the 1960’s by UC San Diego Professor Emeritus John B. West.Proning has been used as a medical intervention since 1976, when a doctor and a nurse in central Michigan published a study showing it could benefit patients in respiratory distress.Dr. Lawrie said there are also two outside factors contributing to shorter hospital stays across the country. The patients that are showing up now tend to be younger than early in the pandemic. Younger patients are more likely to respond well to treatment. There’s also evidence the virus has mutated over time, possibly making it more contagious but slightly less severe, Dr. Lawrie said. However, patients lately have been showing up faster than hospitals can care for them, threatening to overwhelm already crowded facilities. "If that happens, they won't have access to an ICU bed or to the medications that they need," he said. 2699

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Wearing masks and social distancing, churchgoers in Mira Mesa gathered outside of the Good Shepherd Parish Wednesday for a special Veterans Day mass.Under San Diego County's latest move into the purple tier, outdoor mass will be the new normal for the church until we move back into a less restrictive tier.“We want to protect the people,” said Father Michael Pham, a pastor at the Catholic church. “Health is important.”He said since reopening, the church has offered services inside at a limited capacity, outside and online. By Saturday, indoor operations will cease due to the county falling back into the purple tier.“We want to comply with the state and health department,” said Pham. “It’s a challenge, but people seem to adapt very well.”While Pham plans to comply, some others are pushing back.Skyline Church posted a lengthy statement to its website, reacting to news of the purple tier. Part of the message said, “Regardless of what tier the governor assigns to San Diego County, our Board, Trustees, and staff all agree that it is necessary to remain open for the overall health and well-being of our communities.”We saw this happen during the last round of closures. Some churches kept their doors open, saying shutting them any longer would lead to severe problems for people, including mental health issues. The county’s public health officer sent cease and desist letters to a few, but some continued to fight back, arguing that religious services are essential.“Fighting for our religious freedoms and pushing back against government overreach is not only worth the cost, it’s essential,” said the pastors of Awaken Church in a video posted to the church’s website months ago during another closure.Pham said his main goal is to protect his congregants and only reopen once allowed.“We try to do the best we can,” he said. “People are really conscientious about what they need to do, that’s important, that’s the reality that we live in right now.” 1991

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While the CDC has issued guidance for the cruise ship industry to reopen during the pandemic, the Port of San Diego says it's too soon to tell when the industry would restart locally.Friday, the CDC urged a "phased approach" to reopening the industry that has been largely shuttered since April following a no-sail order due to the pandemic. The agency says cruise lines will need to test safety protocols via mock voyages with volunteers before they can host passengers. Still, the order was the first movement on cruise ships since the CDC issued its no-sail order in March to help stop the spread of the coronavirus outbreak. Adam Deaton, Port of San Diego cruise business representative, told ABC 10News that the port will have to coordinate with cruise companies on what their next steps will be."It is too soon to say how soon sailing could resume in San Diego. Our next steps will be to coordinate with Holland America and Carnival on their plans, as they are the first few cruises on our schedule. Currently, our first scheduled cruise is Dec. 19 with Holland America’s Koningsdam. If any cruise lines request to conduct test sailings in San Diego, we will coordinate with all relevant federal, state and local agencies," Deaton said.RELATED: CDC offers framework for cruise lines to start sailing againAccording to the Port of San Diego, 70 cruises have been canceled during the 2020-21 season. There are currently 77 calls still on schedule for the port. The loss has taken 0 million in economic activity from the San Diego economy. The CDC says its guidance applies to ships that can carry at least 250 passengers in U.S. waters and operators must demonstrate adherence to testing, quarantine, and isolation, as well as social distancing for passengers and crew members.Jeff Spring, a spokesman for the Auto Club, said demand for cruises in 2021 is high, given cash incentives from the cruise lines and more flexible cancellation policies. 1981
