SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - This year Comic-Con celebrates its 50th anniversary. Only five people have attended the convention every single year. One of them is noted author and television writer Mark Evanier.Evanier began writing comic books when he was a teenager in the 1960's, including the comics featuring characters like Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny. His mentor was comic book legend Jack Kirby, who created or co-created many of the genre's most famous characters, such as Captain America, the X-Men, and the Incredible Hulk. It was Kirby who first told Evanier that a group of fans in San Diego were planning a comic convention at the El Cortez Hotel."I thought it was a great idea," Evanier told 10News in an interview from his office in Los Angeles. "I had no idea it would get as large as it did. I thought maybe we'll have 400, 500 people there."While Evanier thought it would be a niche convention, even in its early days Kirby saw the potential. "He said this a long time ago when this was a nutty idea to say. He said Comic-Con is going to take over the city of San Diego each year," Evanier recalled.Early supporters of the convention included Marvel creator Stan Lee and science fiction author Ray Bradbury. Comic-Con moved into the San Diego Convention Center in 1991, soon expanding to take over the ballrooms at the surrounding hotels.Evanier has had a big role at the convention over the 50 years. He is a frequent moderator of panels and a guest of honor at many events. He believes the convention will remain in San Diego for the long term (Comic-Con International recently signed an extention through 2024). This is despite the fact that Comic-Con is facing growing competition for the biggest stars and events. Other conventions have launched in cities across the country, and some companies, including Disney, have created their own events. "Yes, there are conventions that are trying to be bigger or wish they could be Comic-Con," Evanier said. "Those are all commercially run. The Comic-Con we go to in San Diego is a non-profit organization."Evanier is scheduled to moderate more than a dozen panels during this year's anniversary convention. 2171

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Thousands of local college students scrambled Tuesday to pack up their belongings and make travel arrangements after San Diego State University and the University of San Diego informed students they had roughly 24 hours to vacate their dorms.In a campus-wide email Tuesday, SDSU said students needed to move out by 7 p.m. Wednesday unless they had a hardship.SDSU said it rapidly expedited its move-out plans after seven Bay Area counties instituted shelter-in-place orders to combat the coronavirus. The university said it was “anticipating that more cities will follow.”“Everyone is shocked. This hasn’t really happened before so no one really knows how to deal with it,” said SDSU student Courtney Robinson.Sophomore Samantha Horan added, “People are just scared and they’re trying to get home as quick as they can.”The university said students with health or safety risks, those who could not return home, and students without an alternate residence could remain on campus. Last week, SDSU had encouraged students to consider staying home after spring break. While some students said they anticipated the move-out order, others were caught off guard.“I was planning on staying [during spring break] so I had nothing packed at all,” said student John Magee.Magee was trying to decide which items to pack in his car for the drive to San Jose, and which to leave behind.“If we leave anything, will it be tossed out? Or how will we get it?” he wondered.The university said students could leave non-essential belongings behind “if absolutely necessary.” “However, it cannot be determined at this time when you will be able to collect any left belongings,” SDSU said in a statement.The university said students will receive a credit for any paid rent and unused meal plans.Other local universities had already encouraged their students to leave dorms in the coming days. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Secretary of the Interior stated in no uncertain terms in a letter sent to the San Diego County Board of Supervisors Thursday federal law supersedes state law. This was in reference to an ordinance the San Diego County Board of Supervisors passed in November banning recreational shooting, saying it was unconstitutional.Currently the law states you can shoot at targets on BLM land, "as long as it is done in a safe manner, without damaging natural resources or improvements on public lands." There is a section that states you may not fire any plastic pellets, exploding, tracer or steel core rounds. He also said the board never spoke to the federal government."When he [the Secretary of the Interior] found out the entire department said no this isn’t something we’re going to stand by at all," Schwartz said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Board of Supervisors announced Monday that the county will close bars without a license to sell food ahead of the July 4 weekend in an effort to slow rising coronavirus cases.San Diego Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said the county will close all bars, wineries, and breweries that do not have a license to serve food. California took a similar stance with several counties over the weekend."Bars are purely social settings where different people and groups often mix. It's a simple reality that alcohol consumption impairs judgment and may lead to less compliance with physical distancing guidelines," Fletcher said. Of those, two outbreaks were traced back to restaurants/bars. But lifeguards are warning people expected to flock to the shores of San Diego about stingrays. “The stingrays are out in full force,” lifeguards said in a Facebook post. According to lifeguards, the California round ray feeds in the shallows off the California coast.
